“Not your average cave”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

Stopped for a quick visit on the way back from Sukau to Sandakan. Bird Nest harvesting season had finished but it was still an amazing place. The walk to the caves takes you through the forest and we were lucky enough to see a wil Orangutan. Definately worth a visit.

“Unique Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2012

We hired a local driver to take us, and were surprised to find ourselves the only people there. I was expecting crowds, so entering the dark cave without a flashlight required a little nerve.

There is a boardwalk with footholds on the steeper slopes. It also has a handrail, but since 2 million bats and swifts leave quite an impression on anything below them, it is important to keep your footing. The guano feeds the cockroaches (probably a million of those as well!), who in turn keep the rats well fed, who do their part by keeping starvation at bay for the snakes. Probably just as well we didn’t have the means to see!

It is by no means as bad as some of the posts suggest. The smell isn’t bad, and the cockroaches move slowly, and scuttle away whenever you go near them.

I used a bin liner to lay on the handrail so that I could steady my camera for photos. Naturally, I threw it away afterwards.

Our driver was called Sam, his number is 0138962459, and he cost MYR 150 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm, a taxi wanted MYR 300 (MYR 250 after haggling). I could really recommend him, his English is fairly good, and he drives comfortably and safely in a new, clean car with A/C. I guess your hotel can call him.

As a bonus we saw a group of wild Orang Utan hanging around in a tree alongside the access road. Ask him to drive slowly, and keep a lookout high in the trees.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2012

Worth a visit, impressively large cave where they harvest birds nests several times a year for the infamous birds nest soup. Full of cockroaches, bats and birds. You will need to pay more to enter if you take (or claim to have) a camera and even more for a video camera.

“Boys own adventure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

The boys loved this experience, cockroaches, smells, centipedes and lots of poo. On the walk in through the rainforest we saw four orangutans, which was a highlight. It was not nest-picking season, so the cave was very quiet.

“Interesting experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

This is an interesting experience and not for people who don't like creepy crawlies...the place is home to millions of glistening cockroaches. The bird's nest gathering techniques and the natural history side of the cave were interesting, and I certainly didn't envy the man who had to sit in the cave to guard the nests, possibly one of the worst jobs in the world. The tour is very brief though and quite expensive for what you get, a little tourist exploitation I think.
