Proboscis Lodge Bukit Melapi
Reviewed March 11, 2014

Stayed at this lodge by default. Was booked to stay in the Sukau rainforest lodge, but Borneo Eco tours misplaced our booking and by the time it had been rectified our room booking had been allocated to others. The 2nd option of Borneo Rainforest lodge had also been booked up, so we had no other choice than to stay at the Proboscis lodge. The cost to stay here was much less than Sukau, but when you read Sukau's reviews it is quite plain to see why.
We were allocated room 1 which overlooked the river and the view was nice.
The room itself was very basic, but we hadn't expected much more than this.
What was really disappointing was the bathroom. It was dirty to the point war you needed to wear shoes when taking a shower. There was toothpaste still in the sink from the previous occupants and lost of water splashes up the mirror. The toilet was laden with pubic hair. It had obviously not been cleaned for some time & neither had any of the tiles or floor.
The towels & bedding were ancient and in need of being thrown away
We ended up being the only guests at the lodge and this itself meant there was no atmosphere. The staff with the exception of Tinnie kept to themselves, avoiding getting into any conversation.
There was plenty of food offered, but again we were expecting Malaysian curries & got chicken & chips. No choices were offered.Full English breakfast was given in the morning. On the second morning, I asked if I could just have some fruit. Expecting a melon plate that had been brought out the previous morning. What I was given was a bunch of bananas!!!!

The lodge needs some updating, with a splash of charisma & lots of good customer service.
Would I stay here again? definitely not.

Nice place to be if you want to live the jungle. Rooms are basic but clean and nice, wi fi in the lobby; food is good, but few choices. One night is enough to see wild animals and have a nice couple of trips with the boat. Beware the mosquitoes

Greetings from Proboscis Lodge Bukit Melapi~

We take note on your feedback of your stay.

We are glad that you had a good time and experience with us especially as mentioned the boat cruises. We hope that you had a great night.

As for the mosquitoes, it is advisable in the future to bring an insect repellent to fend off the mosquito bites.

Please have a look at our other two properties which is one of them, SDC Mabul for diving experience around Mabul and Kapalai Island. The other one is Survivor Lodge Pulau Tiga for a muddy experience in our Mud Volcano Pool.

For further information, please do visit our facebook page, SDC Mabul = www.facebook.com/sdcmabul and Survivor Lodge Pulau Tiga = www.facebook.com/pulautigaresort.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Having made a relatively late holiday decision, availability in this area was pretty limited for our two night stay..
We were the only people staying there which worked to our favour when taking boat trips out to explore (which were great and the guide was really knowledgeable) but made for an odd atmosphere at meal times.
The staff were all very sweet and eager to please but unfortunately we found this to be much more basic than the reviews and websites led us to believe.
The rooms were really basic, especially the bathrooms, and the ac unit would even disturb the sleep of a a heavy sleeper. The beds were stiff as a board and linen threadbare.
Although we were paid up for two nights we quickly decided that one night was more than enough so cut our losses left early.
On the plus side, eating breakfast whilst wild monkeys swung through the trees around us was a real highlight.

The Lodge is gorgeous, quiet, and welcoming up river and on the opposite side of the river from Sukau. If you are concerned about the travel warnings for Sabah, I urge you to reconsider any plans on canceling a trip to Kinabatangan river. The communities are 100's of miles inland from where there was trouble with the Philippines early in the spring. The lack of tourist make it an ideal time to visit for personalized service, no boat jams for animal viewing, and peace. The wildlife is magnificent as well. We saw over 30 species of exotic birds, crocodiles, pythons, orangutans, long-tailed macaques, silver leaf monkeys, proboscis monkeys and had a morning with the cutest animal in the world, the Pygmy Elephant. The staff here went above and beyond the norm to help us go many miles aup river to find the herd. We stayed here as well as at the simpler and very basic Greenview Lodge in Sukau. The rooms and food here were first rate and our balcony overlooking the river well protected during afternoon showers. A special thanks goes Jeffrey and Rayna for ensuring our needs were met.

Room Tip: We loved being in a chalet overlooking the river. We were in number 4.

We stayed here 2 nights with 3 little kids. First night there was another couple, second night we were all only in this fairly big place. I assume this is indeed due to the recent "invasion" in East Sabah.

The rooms are basic. The staff was helpful in making sure the kids had dishes they like. We made 3 boat trips in total and they were all great, the kids loved it! Spotted plenty of proboscis monkeys and even an orang utan.

They only thing is the second day we made a boat trip early morning and another one late afternoon. In between there is really not much to do at the lodge and it was a bit difficult to keep the kids entertained all day.

A great lodge on the Kinabatangan River, we stayed in 2 of the cabins right along the river. The rooms were comfortable and clean, but definitely no frills. The power comes from generators, so don't be surprised when the power is off in the late morning. The food was plentiful and delicious and the staff was very accommodating with our request for vegetarian meals - they always brought 2 additional (and creative!) vegetarian dishes to our table during lunch and dinner buffets. The only strange thing about our stay was that only one other couple was staying there, but I believe it was likely due to the recent conflict in Lahad Datu that kept other guests away from the region as we had heard from our tour guide. The cruises on the river offered spectacular wildlife viewing and was a very restful place to stay.

We arrived here after 10 min boat ride, the entrance and the reception area does leave a good impression on you, with the monkeys hopping by the trees and hornbills flying by.
The staff was so nice and very helpful, it felt like a home stay, instead of a hotel.
Food was very fresh and a decent amount of variety every day. we stayed in Lodge N'2 with a balcony over looking the river.
(First of all, If you are going here expecting luxury, you will be disappointed) The rooms are very clean, spacious, well maintained but very basic. the kingsize bed was very comfy, perfectly functioning fan and also A/C. But the bathroom was a bit too "basic", which is the only disappointing thing about this place.
But for what they lack in luxury, they make up for it with the wonderful nature and wildlife surrounding your lodge. we had a gorgeous owl stop by each morning, and Hornbills nesting in trees in front of us every night. If you are heading out to Kinabatangan river, and looking for a "basic" stay, this is worth every penny. we loved our stay here, and definitely will be back next time.

Room Tip: Pick a room with view over the river
