We went to May fair hotel after getting a recommendation from the taxi driver and a local tourist office. The hotel looks pretty simple from the outside, almost not worth getting in .. But when we went upstairs we were positively suprised, great rooms, basic though very clean, good working ac, flat screen with a DVD player (and there is a huge DVD collection which you may use for free, GREAT!). Hot shower available, fantastic big towels, big mirror and big beds . The rooms are amazingly clean eventhough there are a lot of cockroaches and rats on the streets, you don't see any of them and other insects in the hotel which is great! The location is good pretty central, close to markets and shops! There is a great market on Sunday just at the corner of the street.
The host is great ! We liked him and the place so much that we stayed 3 more nights than initially.. He was really funny - had a good sense of humor - you have to get used to it first though, but we liked it! And pretty helpful - he helped us get along sandakan, did the laundry and so on.. It's a good place to stay and really cheap !! The cheapest place in Borneo as far as we can tell - MYR 55 for a double room!

As other people said: this hotel is of great value for money. The room looks a little bit like hospital room (decoration is not the main focus) but are also as clean as in a hospital! You have everything you need in here: many Power outlet; towels, soap, cold purified and boiled water, shower with hot water, place to put your stuff, dvd player and many movies you can borrow. This is the best, cleanest and cheapest hotel we've been in Borneo. The manager is realy nice and gave us good information.

We stayed here for 2 nights a few weeks ago.
Great value, super clean, great security!
The Mayfair is owned and run by Hoi Shiuh Lam - for the last 35+ years in fact!!
The bathrooms are a bit old, but everything works and everything is very clean. The rest of the decor is, shall we say, 'a little blue'??!!!!
The air conditioning works really well, and so does the wifi. There are tvs and video players in each room, and you are welcome to take 5 videos at a time to your room!!
Two bottles of filtered water is provided daily, as are clean towels etc.
There are I think, 12 rooms in all. The one thing Mr Lam asks, is that you leave the key each time you go out. This maintains the good security of the place, as he knows who's in, and who's not.
He is a wealth of information of where to go and how to get there.
If a taxi is needed, no problem, he calls 'hotel taxi' and in comes Mr Tong!!
It's in a good location, very close to the waterfront, restaurants and supermarkets etc.
The front door is right on the corner of the street, and then it's up 2 flights of stairs to the front desk.
I would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone.
I made contact via email after looking up the hotel on line.

We stayed 3 nights in Mayfair hotel, RM50/ per room/ per night (incl. tax), the owner Mr. Lin is really helpful and friendly!!!
The room is big and very clean, much cleaner than a lot of motel in China, all the facilities are in good condition.
Moreover, the location of the hotel is quite good, near the sea, bus station, supermarket and a lot of shops around.
BTW, Mr.Lin prepared a lot of DVD/ VCD for guests, every room has 1 DVD and LCTV.
DO NOT hesitate to stay here!!!!!

I would highly recommend a stay at the May Fair Hotel. Me and my girlfriend stayed here for about four nights and loved the place. The owner is from Hong Kong and is very helpful when trying to sort out transpotation or things to do in the area. I am pretty sure the cleaner has got OCD as whenever we returned after a day out our room was spotless. They even folded up my cable on my phone charger and put an elastic band around it. There is a TV and DVD player in ever room and a huge selection of free DVDs to borrow. Also free water ever day and washing lines in every bathroom make this place perfect for backpackers.

For 50RM per night I was barely expecting a roof, but instead May Fair gave everything a traveller needs and a little bit more.

Rooms are generously sized, very clean (if a little clinical) and air conditioned. The decor looks like an old hospital, not helped by the fluorescent lighting, but for £10 you won't hear any complaints from me.

Shower was perfect, hot with a rainfall type shower head. Internet strong and fast enought to cope with a few hundred uploads to Flickr (neccesary when you go visiting Sepilok etc).

TV was huge and as everyone has said the collection of DVDs you can borrow free is pretty extensive - especially if you like Action films.

The owner was really helpful reccomending where to eat and booking us our trips to Kinabatagan River and a day trip doing Sepilok, Labuk Bay, RDC and the Memorial Park all for less than the tour operators charge.

If you want luxury go to the 4 Poitns Sheraton, if you just want a good clean room with a friendly owner at an excellent price then May Fair is the place for you!

I wouldn't recommend spending more than a day in Sandakan, but if you're in transit between Borneo's amazing natural wonders (we were on our way to Turtle Island the following morning), the May Fair Hotel is a perfectly decent place to spend the night. It's very central and the rooms are ridiculously cheap. It's all a bit dated, so don't be expecting Sheraton standards, but the rooms are clean and have a pretty strong wifi signal. The owner is a lovely, funny and helpful man, and you'll know by now about the enormous selection of dvds that you can borrow, so you can have a relaxing evening in before you get back out into nature.
