We had high tea here and sat under the gazebo. Good view and a nice spot for a rest. The food was average, but it was more about the ambience and history that we enjoyed.

Lovely breezy place but the food were so, so - nothing special. They should stick to providing well prepared local food rather than foreign food all of which were over-priced

Watered down and tasteless iced coffees, luridly artificial tasting milkshake and a crumpet that had no right to refer to itself as such - all for far too much money.

We were a group of 13 pre-booked for a set meal in the English Tea House and Restaurant. On enquiring I was told that this was the former Customs House in the days of Empire. I'm not sure that I believe that story as the Tea House occupies a hill top position overlooking the port of Sandakan. The Customs office would need to be at the port so the building was more probably the home of the senior Customs officer.

There are the front pages of old newspapers on display in the restaurant and one that caught my attention was one announcing the conquest of Everest in 1953.

The meal was delightful - I had chicken with mashed potatoes but it was the presentation that was so impressive. The chicken was wrapped in beef bacon surmounted by shredded vegetables all set on a bed of mashed potatoes. This meal was very welcome as while we had been staying in some off-the-beaten-track lodges meals tended to consist of fish or chicken with rice, or failing that it was a choice of chicken or fish with rice! We actually had warm bread rolls with the soup and some yummy cakes for dessert.

The 'Britishness' of the place is enhanced by the presence of a croquet lawn outside.
