The silver leaf monkeys kinda distract you from the proboscis monkeys on the platform as the SLM come right up to you... cheapest place to buy stuffed animals I have found.

It was an expensive day for me as a budget traveller (120 ringgits for entrance, shuttle from sandakan (40km) and camera fee) but it was worth it. The shuttle bus was on time and took us to each viewpoint for the feeding times and we watched a movie explaining many things about the monkeys, the way they live and their environment. We had the chance to see them quite closely and jumping from trees. It was a good day at the sanctuary.

Sanctuary has 2 viewing platforms short distance from each other - each having different viewing times to enable moving from one to other . Started at "A" which brings via boardwalk among wetland to platform. Large "proboscis crowd" showed up - they are more active compared to Orang Utan . Driving between palm plantatiion to platform B where they showed a film on these monkeys and the sanctuary. Occasionally also Orang Utans happen to visit - but these are extremely shy. Both terraces are partially shady - platform A brings them closer to the visitor.
There's a resort close by : Restaurant good for a drink nicely located surrounded by wetland, but food pretty lousy. Close to restaurant is tree where hornbill bird houses.

The accessibility of the Proboscis Monkeys and their environment was a particularly good surprise. The Silver Leaf Monkeys an unexpected bonus.

Indeed Labuk Bay was the highlight of our trip to Sandakan, perhaps even Malaysia. The sanctuary, which is located inside a palm oil plantation, is home to a colony of proboscis monkeys. But the real stars are the Silver Leaf Monkeys which also reside at the Sanctuary. They are almost tame and hang around at platform B.
A word of warning: be early. The first feeding at Platform B is at 11:30, we arrived at 10:30 and there was already a large number of tourists there. The Sliver Leaf Monkeys are fed at about 11:00 and the proboscis monkeys at 11:15 so be early.
