“Great Stay, Great Location!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2013

This place is very clean, affordable on a budget, and in a great location to do a variety of things around the city. They offer a myriad of tours, so it is easy to explore the rest of Sabah from here. My favorite part was that it is located directly across from the central market where we bought a few lunches and dinners to cook. The hostel offers free range of their kitchen, so it is easy to make your own meals with local foods from the market. The staff here are wonderful and offer great service. I stayed here 3 nights during my stay, and I enjoyed each of them. I would recommend it to any backpacker looking for a good place to stay inbetween their adventures.

I stayed in this hotel in July. After a full day of travelling I arrived to a lovely welcome by the owner of this hotel. This welcome included a drink and pancakes and I availed of the services of a massage that evening. While the rooms were basic they were clean and the hotel was in a central location close to all amenities. The owner was very up to date on tours and offered a booking service which was very competitive with other operators. She also gave you the option of how to do the trip by yourself. I originally only booked two nights but returned for a further two nights. The hotel was Los located above a restaurant which specialised in local family dishes. I would certainly recommend this as aBudget hotel.

My stay here was warm and welcoming, the food was great (the free welcome banana fritters are delicious), the pancakes a welcome change from the usual backpacker breakfast and cheap if you wanted seconds (and being lactose intolerant I was pleasantly surprised that they contained no wheat or milk but still tasted good!) The beds were clean and pillows good and we never heard of any of the guests we spoke to having bugs of any sort. Did a day trip Kinabatagan River Cruise through them and it was fun. The dorms were the cheapest we saw in Sandakan or Kk and I would come back here.

We stayed here (luckily) for just a night in Sandakan before visiting Turtle Island the next day.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, however the room was really poor. Upon entering, the musty smell in our double room hit us straight away. After peeling back the old bed cover to see bugs scurrying around and hairs all over the sheets we slept with one eye open on top of the bed. My girlfriend and I have stayed in many hostels and budget places over the years and this ranks as one of the worst.

The breakfast was nice but at just one pancake isn't really anything you'd rave about.

Dear Valued Guest,

As the bugs issue came for the very first time in our ENTIRE business period since we started
operation from day 1, we took this matter very seriously. We make a thorough search but we could not find any. We will be very grateful if you can specify the room you stayed so we could focus in identifying the said bugs. So far our staffs tried their best to locate but not successful.

Please email us at seaviewsandakan@yahoo.com stating your name, date of stay and room you stayed in.

Please help us to overcome this matter. Regards.

The entrance of this hostel is a bit odd, you have to go through a restaurant. Upstairs, the hostess had to come from somewhere else, but after that we got a very nice welcome with tea and fried banana. To us, it seemed as if the hostel was completely empty and the hostess over-enthusiastic with our arrival. Rooms are simple, but clean and good. No ac. Nice breakfast is included. One of the bathrooms was still under construction, which strengtened the feeling that there was no one else.

Thank you for staying with us and sharing your unbiased views.

You are absolutely correct, one whole wing of the hotel was closed for maintenance and repair due to a burst pipe which affected other piping systems on that wing but this has now been rectified and is open for business once again.

The reason for sharing our entrance through the restaurant was in order to ensure the safety of our guests and their belongings by monitoring entry through only one door. We have now closed the restaurant downstairs due to the holy month of Ramadan and the hotel main entrance is open again.

Because we value our guests so much we could not hide our enthusiasm upon arrival. Once again thank you for your time in writing a review and we hope you can stay with us again.

I don't know how this place has got such great reviews. The lady the runs the place is gem but I can't say anything else good about the place. We booked online for a twin room - RM35 each, to find that it was a fan room. When we asked for aircon we were told to pay extra despite the place being deserted and not being given a choice online. RM35 for a fan room seems extortionate anyway, let alone when the only view out of the window is of 3 women sleeping on public benches.
The room we moved to smelt like an old lady's wardrobe, it felt dirty though the bed linen was clean.
Basically the property is old and damp and not much has been done to bring it up to date.
The amazing breakfast that everyone harps on about was one pancake and one cup of tea- you get charged for more.

Checked into harbourview the second night, beautiful and clean and cheaper!!

Dear valued guest,

As you mentioned in the review that you stayed in June, our record does not show any booking made in a fan room with RM35 per person and we never had SUCH rate in June. Please submit prove of booking in June or prior for June stay. However, in July we are able to trace a booking in fan twin and July being peak season, there was surcharge applies.

In all booking engines fan and airconditioning room choice is offered clearly.. So what you wrote is not correct at all.

We are doing our best to upgrade gradually because this property is old.

We maintain the cost of additional pancake at RM1 although many suggests more. Usually one gets full with 1 pancake.

Awaiting you sending prove of booking for stay in JUNE via email seaviewsandakan@yahoo.com

Regards...

We only slept one night here, because we wanted to visit Sepilok and the Kinabatangan river. My friend and I had not yet decided which river cruise we wanted to book and the lady (the owner) gave us some really helpful information. She adviced us to book another rivercruise than we had chosen because she had heard that the rare pygmee elephant was spotted there. And, thanks to her we did saw them!!
She also arranged a small city tour (including Sepilok) for us, which was very cheap.

The rooms are basic and the breakfast is good. But the biggest plus of this hotel is the very friendly owner!
