“Great experience at a unique dive rig”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

We chose Seaventures because we thought "when are we ever going to have the chance to stay on an oil rig again?" And we are very glad that we chose it. Starting from the first inquiry, my emails were responded to very quickly and effeciently, pick-up in Tawau and check in was very well organized, and we were met with welcome drinks on the rig. The rooms are basic, but has everything you need. We were there to dive, so as long as we had a shower and comfy bed, that was great.
Staff are awesome! We dove with several divemasters over our 5 days there, and they were all great, pointing out the macro stuff and always very professional and safe.
Food was plentiful and delicious, and we even got freshmade donuts and deep friend bananas for snacks!
Although the weather wasn't great while we were there, dive staff were always happy and positive and we were still able to have some amazing dives at Sipadan. We got 2 days at Sipadan, and saw huge schools of jacks, bumphead parrotfish and barracudas. An awesome experience.
We also did a few dives on our own under the rig, which was fun and super easy to do, just grab your gear and ask staff to lower you down on the elevator.
The last night, there was a bunch of us leaving, and we had a big party with the live band (made up of some great staff) playing, it was a great send-off!
Overall, really good value, unique location, great staff and new friends~! We couldn't have chosen a better spot.

Describing Seaventures is not the easiest thing to do. Arriving at the huge steel rig, you might think "Where the hell am I?", but as soon as the crew have welcomed you, you get in to a really layed back atmosfere. The rooms are of a reasonable hostel-quality, the food is quite good and served in buffet-style and the overall place is clean, but those are not the reasons to stay here; diving is. The diving is quite simply amazing. I did my open water course here, and even though most divers that come here are more advanced, the divemasters took great care of me and my course. It's really obvious that the divecrew goes for nothing less than the best, and really want to teach. Throughout my (one on one!) course, and afterwards during the group-dives the divemasters were patient, and did their best to give the best diving experience. They have a lot of knowledge about the areas they dive in, so were able to show many things. The rig crew is not to be forgotten, and absolutely did their best to make my stay as wonderfull as can be.

When at Seaventures you can dive at Mabul/Kapalai, and of course at Sipadan. There are 3 dives planned per day, but if you have a buddy (or buddy up with another guest) you can grab your gear and dive right under the rig (artificial reef) whenever you want, or request extra dives. After the dives you can relax at the bar of gamesroom. There's a boat everyday to nearby Mabul if you want to discover that island. Having done that, I can honestly say that Seaventures looked like the absolute best place to stay, when compared to the resorts at Mabul.

Simply put, it was an amazing experience and I hope to go back there soon.

There are some resorts based on Mabul or Kapalai Island, and hotels in Semporna, which might have bigger or prettier rooms, by why bother when you can stay on Seaventures dive rig? If you are a scuba diver, and have travelled here to dive, Seaventures is the right place for you. We stayed 3D/4N in a double room with ensuite bathroom and A/C, and that was perfect for us. The meals are buffet style with 3 courses, and there was a BBQ while we where there - it's nothing fancy, but it is good, and you'll get what you need. There will be served afternoon snacks as well.
The best thing is the atmosphere. The divemasters and instructors are very friendly, helpfull and passionate divers, who want to give you the best possible experience, so will the rig crew. All guests here are divers, so in between dives, the deck will be buzzing with talk about your recent dive, showing pictures and flipping books, telling stories. And the diving is great, the artificial reef under then rig is nice with a lot of life. And then there is Sipadan a short boatride away!
We would stay here again, and I would recommend it to any diver I know.

If i´m gona go diving again at Sipadan area this is place for me.
View is better at rig than at island. Staff was friendly and everything works well.
But if travelling whit no diving person maybe this is not best choice.

We've booked a 4 days-3 nights trip to Seaventures through the Tourist Office Center in Sandakan. Just because it was the only place where we could get a permit for diving (for at least one day) near Sipadan Island. We've just realised it was a dive rig (like an oil rig in the sea) one day before we arrived!

The whole stay was just one big, breathtaking surprise!
First of all, arriving at the rig was magic. I'll never forget the first experience and sound of being lift up on the platform from the boat. Once you're on the rig, you can see immediately the place is very well managed and organised. We've got a extensive briefing from one of staff members. And we realised that this wouldn't be a laid back stay... And our number 1 priority should be: diving (and trying/praying to get as many dives as possible to Sipadan Island).

We were just 'hobby divers' when we entered the dive rig. But became 'dive freaks' during our 4 days-stay.
In the last 6 years we DIVE at several dive spots in Asia (Sulawesi-Bunaken, Lombok-Gili Islands, Bali-Menjangang Island, Sumatra-Pulau Weh). But diving near Sipadan Island can't be compared to any of this places (maby a bit to Sulawesi-Bunaken). It's truly 'dive heaven' with big coral reefs, nice soft corals, plenty of big and small turtles, a lot of reef sharks, tornado's of thousands jackfish + barracuda's, different species of sea horses and much more! It's also very easy to dive near Sipadan Island - no strong currents and mostly wall dives. And a lot could be seen by just snorkeling as well.

The dive masters at Seaventures are friendly & professional. There motto is: safety first (and letting their guests being on time for the dive boats). Don't expect to dive until you've reached 50 bar or less.
All dives are 45-50 minutes. And you'll be OK with this dive time, because almost every minute is a breathtaking one, especially near Sipadan Island. And if you're not satisfied yet, you can grab a tank and make an own dive with your buddy: unlimited diving from the rig is included in the price.

For us, staying at Seaventures was the perfect 'desert' of our honeymoon. The whole experience of staying at the rig and the overwhelming Sipadan dives compensated the basic rooms - and seperate beds ;-). If I would have one suggestion for Seaventures: spend a week on renovation of the rooms. A clean basic room is sufficient, no worries about that. But nearly everything in our room (213) was broken: the sink, the closet, the clothes rack and the airco was held together with a plaster.

After all, I had a hard time when I had to saying goodbye to all the nice staff members. Together with some other guests from UK/Greece and Canada, it felt like we were one big family for 4 days. I'll miss our cool dive master Helmi, the sweet dive master and great underwater photographer Christine ('Suki'), bubbly 'Sipadan breakfast maker' Najib, the charming rig boss Sham & the shy, cheerful 'dive boat kid' Ahmad. There's one good about leaving the rig: I can loose some weight, the food at the rig was too good to be true. I ate for two ;-)

Had a great 6 day trip to Seaventures resort. The staff were terrific and the dive masters did a great job taking us to the best places and ensuring that the most was made out of each dive. The two dive masters that I had Mondo and Cat were very friendly and ensured that were kept safe on each trip. Another dive master from Italy who spoke fluent Chinese was very helpful when I had an ear infection - you know who I am now : )The facilities were excellent for a dive trip in a very remote part of the world. If you are expecting champagne service and a mani / pedi each day this is not the place for you. If you are expecting a resort that is completely set up for diving you are in the right place.

I was able to go to Sipidan twice in the time that I was there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Each dive was an amazing experience and I have dove some amazing places in the past (Cozumel, Bahamas live aboard, Barbados, etc.) Saw bump headed parrot fish, sharks, enormous schools of jacks and baraccudas. Truly an amazing experience. The local dives were also great and we saw lots of interesting maring life including frog fish, a wide selection of nudibranch, turtles and so much more!

Life on the rig was great. The chance to meet other divers from around the world was great and I enjoyed the conversation at breakfast and dinner table every day. Being in a remote part of the world and on a rig, there was not a large selection of food, having said this what was prepared was delicious and kept us all diving on a full stomach. My room, while spartan, was kept clean and the AC worked well (and was much needed since i was there in June).

Overall, given the high quality of staff and the fact that the rig is totally set up for diving I would definitely do a repeat of this trip again given the chance. Many thanks to all the staff of Seaventures and fellow divers for making my trip to Sipidan one that I will cherish for many years to come.

Tim (from Canada)

The reason why I chose the rig was as stated on its website--"the only dive rig in the world". My friend was hesitant though because of some of the negative reviews from here. We were SO glad that we stick to the original plan and came, only to find out how ignorant and ungrounded those reviews were. Diving was excellent , wonderful, marvelous , spectacular (put in any positive adjective here & it'll fit) . The dive team on the rig was the best -- Dr.Titta was my AOW instructor and she was so good at delivering skills with details and patience (not to mention that she actually has a PHD degree and speaks fluent Chinese, English and of course Italian!) ; Miji was so adorable, and as a Mabul local, he knew all the dive sites like his own backyard & able to tell which fish live in which cave. The large groups of bumped head parrot fish at Sipadan, leisurely minding their own business indifferent to whatever the hell us silly divers were doing--that's a sight you won't forget for the rest of your life. If you're a dive enthusiast, this is definitely the place for you.
