Bagus Place Retreat
Ranked #3 of 19 Hotels in Pulau Tioman
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 4, 2013

We spent 7 nights at Bagus place and we loved it. Why? Because the water is hot, the water is right there, and there are not so many people at this resort. We could just lounge in the sun and on the beach every day, our little girl loved that.

There are some (for some people) major drawbacks to Bagus place.
1. The food is not good--very few fresh ingredients are used, and both breakfast and lunch very quickly get monotonous and boring. HOWEVER some other families with kids who we talked to really liked the food, so this depends on your expecations and what you are used to. I´ll give you some examples:
-There is only one salad dressing, it is used for everything
-The bread is white and from a factory
-The juices are from cans and cartons
-Some of the cooked vegetables are also canned
-The squid is possibly the most chewy squid I ever had in my life, ever. (and you can see squid swimming in the sea from the pier)
On a positive not about food we asked to eat what the staff had for brekfast and lucnh which was actually quite good some days.
2. The new staff don´t know how to make drinks (but they are very friendly:))
3. There are far to few sand toys and swim toys
4. There is a local girl who can be quite mean to your kids if you don´t watch it
5. The place is in lack of some TLC (this only matters if you have an eye for that kind of thing)

Also note that the place has just changed owners, and so some changes may be underway. The new owner was there during our stay but did not seem interested in our opinions, so perhaps that is not the best omen.

The new owners are committed to ensuring that the legacy of Bagus Place carries on. Ms Aien as the Resident Resort Manager, is also a co-owner of Bagus Place. She subscribes strongly to protecting the environment and is very much a people focused person. She is a very keen diver and loves the outdoors. She is ably assisted by Rosie in managing the day to day affairs of Bagus Place.

The new owners take all comments and suggestions made by guests very seriously and will endeavour to meet guests expectations.

I have traveled a fair bit, but this was hands down my favorite place I've ever been. My husband and I went for 5 days on our honeymoon and stayed in Rumah Laut. The views from this chalet were breath taking and the photos can't do justice. The food and hospitality were amazing. It was beyond obligatory "service" as there was genuine care and friendship in every action with the staff. The disconnect from internet, phone, etc. make it a true peaceful retreat, which in turn helps to cultivate great relationships with the other guests who are staying and eating with you every day. But there is also plenty of space to be on your own if that is what you are looking for. The access to snorkeling, kayaking and hiking made a restful yet active vacation completely do-able. We couldn't have chosen a better place for our honeymoon and can't wait to go back!

Bagus place lives up to it's name. It is a truly beautiful spot. The eco friendly chalets blend into the jungle and add to the ambience. Certainly no concrete monstrosities here !!

The team here give a warm welcome, treat you like old friends and nothing is too much bother. There's a wonderful laid back vibe as you sip cocktails, play beach volleyball or enjoy the delicious, home cooked food. Every evening was excited anticipation of the menu.

The snorkelling was world class, unspoilt coral, teeming with multitudes of colourful fish and the joy of swimming with sea turtles. The team will take you off on boat trips to deeper snorkelling spots, treks to waterfalls in the jungle and all exude pride in showing off this beautiful place.

If you like air conditioned, pampered, WiFi, concrete, this is not for you. If you want to be cheek by jowl with nature, chill out with staff and locals, explore and dream of coral islands, jungles and mountains, go to Bagus. It might just be your perfect spot.

Bagus has soul like nowhere I've been and I'll be back to recapture the piece of mine I left there.

Room Tip: The tree house chalet is perfect for couples

Pros: We were made to feel special. The size of the resort was small enough that each guest was part of the community family. The views ambience was great. Just loved the way the rooms are at one with nature and set into the landscape rather than changing the landscape as so many do.
Guest interaction was encouraged and our 12yr old was never bored (no internet... yes...).
Cons: 'Big Chief' was nice although some maintenance required. Steps up to the room are very steep and not to 'western regulations' which made it hard for arthritic grandmother to enter and leave room.

Recommended for all, aged less than 70

we stayed for 7 nights at beautiful Bagus Place resort and could have stayed for longer - despite having a teenager and an 11 year old and there being no wi fi (which I loved!).

We arrived during rough seas, but just as Anish had told us, during our stay we managed to see all kinds of weather at Bagus Place - blue skies, clouds, calm seas, giant waves, a little rain and an electrical storm that was just amazing to watch from the bar.

Bagus Place is also kid heaven, at least for our kids, with frogs at night, mosquito nets to sleep under and the best jetty in the world to jump off. Our 11 year old was amazed by Luke's stories of midnight jetty jumping and Anish's cricketing prowess. Anish and Luke took our children on a morning snorkelling safari where they spotted baby reef sharks and sting rays, our teenager and my husband went on the hot and long jungle trek to the waterfall - which was hard but really worth the effort in the end (and they appreciated the boat pick up home!).

We did two trips to Ringgis Island where the snorkelling was the best we've ever had (we've snorkelled at the Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, Thailand and the Maldives). Walls of fish, lots of reef sharks and clumps of cuttlefish in super clear water, with pontoons that make it easy to get on and off boats.

At night, the shark feeding of the jetty was also amazing, with sharks appearing every night to snack on watermelon and other fish! The house reef is also pretty good and we managed to see the resident turtles - initially after much hunting, and then we saw them every time we went out.

We stayed in the Big Chief Hut - perfect for a family, however a little hard going with so many steps at night after trying a little too many of Luke's Captain Morgan's cocktails! The accommodation was clean and breezy, we had no monkeys invading us, they did like to peep over the walls in the morning, and we think bang on the shutters at night, but they kept their distance. Sheets were changed daily, and laundry was complimentary, which was so good.

Food was also great for an island, and kid friendly too but not at all bland and lots of choices. Great bbq on the beach on Saturday, with low key guitar playing and limbo for the adventurous guests (kids and crazy honeymooners). Krishna's massages were just blissful, and our daughter was enchanted by her accent.

The only thing to watch for is the tides, as low tide makes it pretty difficult to get out of the water from the jetty. And we took our own snorkeling equipment, which was great as there didn't seem to be enough during peak snorkeling times.

Bagus is exactly the kind of resort we love, small, low key and unique, its not 5 star, but this is what makes it so charming. In fact its so good, they should have named it Bagus three times!

Room Tip: all huts look great - and are just as they appear on the resort's website. Big Chief was great...

stayed here for 7 nights...Well, paradise found!
While rain was falling at the Tekek Airport, the sun was shining brilliantly at the south side of Tioman where Bagus Place Retreat is situated. We stayed here at the beginning of monsoon season. We were warned for bad weather and big waves. yes, we had rain..during the night and saw tropical thunder storms...at the rim but no serious trouble.

We stayed at the treehouse. Really the house is built around a real tree. The treehouse is pretty close to the restaurant which means be aware of the monkeys! They might visit your house. The monkeys at Bagus Place only are in search for food so don't leave food unattendant but hide it!

The reef in front of Bagus Place is great. One of the best house reefs I've seen: lots of fishes, a few turttles, saw a shark, some reef sharks, a few small rays and so on. Also made 2 dives near the coast of Tioman. Unfortunately not with Lauren of the diveschool next door. The dives were good espescially the 2nd dive in front of the Berjaya resort.

With a few guests we made the trip to the nearby waterfall by foot. The hike is not very difficult: the most difficult part is the walk between Bagus Place and the nextdoor resort. After that is following the concrete path through Kampong Mukut (after the villige of Mukut 2x right, 1x left) and you're at the waterfall (picture of the waterfall is to be seen at the enterance of the aquarium in the KLCC in Kuala Lumpur...in real it looks much better!). Do wear you swimming gear and plunch into the water!

The resort itself is easy going...only 7 cabins, enough staff to give you a pleasant stay. It doesn't feel like you stay in a hotel or resort but that you are at home...so relaxed.

No roads on the island, no motorvehicles nearby except some motorboats. Staying right on the beach with the jungle surrounding you...you feel like being a part of it. The whole week we walked around on bare feets; feel the coral sand under your feet!

Anish, Krishna and all the others...many thanks for making our stay at Bagus Place Retreat an unforgetable one!

Just returned from a two-week stay here for our honeymoon. Incredible! Fantastic staff, perfect location. Cannot recommend this enough. The best holiday ever!

This is a real treat. From the wooden house accommodation to the fact that you are staying right on the beach, next to the jungle and at the foot of an extinct volcano.
