Berjaya Tioman Resort - Malaysia
Ranked #6 of 19 Hotels in Pulau Tioman
Reviewed June 25, 2014

We stayed at this resort for 4 nights in the superior chalets . We had 3 rooms ... 209, 210, 212 . ( 21 June - 25 June 2014 )
On reaching the ferry terminal at tioman Islands , there was a bus meant for 20 people waiting when we were around 35 people going to the property ... So there we were waiting in the hot summer sun with our luggage for the bus to drop off the passengers and then come back for us !!!!
Didn't the property staff know how many people were checking in that day !!!!
On reaching the property after a 7 hour trek from Singapore ... Only 1 room was ready at 2 pm the other 2 rooms we got after an hour ....
The room air con in room 209 was switching off every hour on its own ... On calling the technician he said we would just have to switch it on every hour throughout our stay !!!!
Even the staff at the reception didn't help out !!!
Also such a big property didn't have ice ..... They had run out of ice even though we were ready to pay for it !!!
The bright side was the staff in the dining area especially the Nepalese interns who went out of their way to service us !!!
Also the pool was closed by 7 pm on a beach resort ... No bar operational by the pool ... The jacuzzi was only for show - cold water with no pressure !!!
Choice of alcohol bad .... The listed brands not available !!!
Overall a good property but too many let downs and service attitude problem ...
Think before u book !!!!
P.S - don't book through berjaya Singapore as the car n driver were a total disaster !!!

Overall, we had a lovely time at Tioman. Loved the snorkelling and fishing and the relaxing atmosphere. Beautiful beach, sun rise, sunset and a beautiful night sky. Things I liked at the hotel was the pool, the restaurant ( nice dinner with a good team of strolling musicians, good breakfast spread), a nice unassuming game room and even a room to watch the Worldcup in the evenings.
We booked 2 adjoining rooms - however, one of them was a let-down as the air conditioner was not cold. Each time we called the reception and the maintenance crew came, they twiddled with the remote controller but soon after they left, the air conditioner in one of the rooms was not cold. We had to go through this routine for 3 nights and each time the air conditioner still did not work properly. The hotel should really get the air conditioners fixed properly... In addition, one of the days, they changed the towels in the room but did not replace them with any new towels. We had to call and wait for quite a long while ....

A total of 17 of us went to Berjaya Tioman for 4D3N. We took the standard chalet accommodation which has 2 apartment adjourning rooms on top and 2 below. Pretty standard rooms. You must understand that this is not a new resort. Pretty old, but not too bad for maintenance. One of the room aircon wasn't cold and we are thankful that the staff took our calls quite promptly and came to check out the aircon. The staffs at the main lobby were helpful and they carried a big smile each time we appear there. Not bad for customer service! I read quite a few reviews about the wait time. We were probably much better off. When we arrived the bus was waiting for us and all went up without a hitch. On the outside of the resorts the place doesn't really appeal, but if you are going to the beach you won't be disappointed! We had a day of fun of swimming and snorkeling and that experience overcome any disappointment you can remember for that day. Oh, do get the sim card and topup with 30 ringgit to have a 30 day unlimited use for internet!

Room Tip: You can have the better rooms like the deluxe suite or higher. Most likely the rooms will be more sp...

Arrived at the Tekek pier with most of the visitors heading to Berjaya Hotel. Had to wait for about an hour at that waiting area just for that 5-7 min ride to the hotel. Each time the hotel bus came, people fought to get on the bus with luggage etc.Waited for 4 rounds before some of my family members managed to get on the bus leaving me and some others behind for the next bus. When we finally managed to reach the hotel lobby, we were made to wait for an hour or so as our rooms were not ready.

On the same evening, went to ask about the hotel shuttle service schedule to the pier at the front desk, their replies were not sure....depends on the ferry schedule etc...When the shuttlebus miraculously arrived at the hotel lobby, we informed the driver that one of us (my mother) was at the restroom and please wait for a min...the driver impatiently said "tak boleh tunggu...banyak orang mau i ambik kat jeti"..

Please do something to your shuttle service arrangement. I live in KL but your shutttlebus reminded me of those days when minibus roamed KL.

Frankly, pretty bad for a well known resort. We reached Tekek jetty on Friday around 2pm, but need to wait almost 45mins to get the feeder bus to the hotel...because many people need to scramble to ride the feeder bus..no queue of whatsoever...even the bus driver dun care to entertain at all...just care about whether their bus will overload or not.Hotel should provide more transport from jetty to hotel since the hotel already knew how many will come.

When we reached the lobby, we need to wait another 1.5hr at the lobby(4.30pm) just to get our room, their excuse was our room still under cleaning! ( Shouldnt the room prepared before official check in time which is 2.30pm?)

When we reach our room, the cleaning lady is still organizing the things, and our room is without
towel & shampoo, but we got it after we made a request. The room itself is quite worn out, and there are stains on the sofa. The second day we made a request to the jetty for a walk by using their feeder bus, the reaction of the bus driver was bad, and told us to be quick coz he said there are a huge crowd waiting to pick up at the jetty, but when we arrive at jetty, there were just less than 10 ppl waiting.

Conclusion is, tioman is a nice place to relax, clear sea and nice sand, but our vacation spoilt by these bad manners ppl. Forgot to mention the BlueWater Express Ferry service is as bad, rude to customer and mishandled our luggage...

Berjaya is a very big resort. Good for people who enjoy ' crowds and buzz' (mostly kids). There is one things that bothered me the most and I want to share it with other people who are thinking of choosing this resort. Our room stank of cigarettes!!! Very badly!!! Neither my partner nor me smoke, so it was so disgusting to spend even one night there. As we had just come from Tunamaya resort (south of the island) where everything was so clean and nice, it was so unacceptable that we are pushed in this stinky room. No-one asked us whether we would prefer smoking or non-smoking room. It is a very important detail that resort needs look after. We were very disappointed and even the lovely view from our balcony couldn't cheer us up.

Good things - dinner buffet, easy travel from Tekek jetty, choice of activities, 2 swimming pools... I can't think of anything else.

We stayed at the RCI time share apartments at Berjaya Condotel, Tioman from June 02 - 07, 2014. The view from our room was simply amazing. We got a 2 bedroom apartment at Berjaya, which was really spacious and clean. It is not advisable to leave the apartment balcony doors or windows open though, as it's frequented by a family of monkeys from nearby tree tops, and they could get aggressive. Sri Nelayan restaurant at Berjaya Tioman resort is amazing and their buffet spread is awesome. But you need to go in early for dinner, as some of the dishes may not be available if you go in late.

There's lots to do at Tioman Island and the snorkelling & diving trips around the Island are a lot of fun. The hotel's staff is not really efficient (laid back attitude) in arranging trips as they need a minimum number of guests for any activity and they hardly take any initiative from their end, to help you form groups, so that you could take the excursion. They would rather ask you to take a personalised trips which works out to be expensive.

Also they have another counter at the resort, right beside their own facility, which I guess is run by local operatives. Please bargain with them and set all conditions for the trip in advance. These guys are obnoxious and rude. We had a round of argument with them after which I pretty much arranged all my excursions with operators near Tekek harbour. I found the guys outside were very nice, friendly and accommodating. There is one gentleman called Rahim. His contact no. is 019-7261272. He took us around Tioman and was quite reliable.

Our road trip to Juara village was also very interesting. I had initially planned to go trekking through the jungle, but was notified that one British national from the Turtle project at Juara had lost his way in the jungle and was missing since the last seven days. We learned next day about his unfortunate demise. He was found dead in the forest. On probing further, I was informed that he had ventured in to the jungle alone around afternoon time and had lost his way. So guys, please do not venture in to the jungle unless you have a local guide who seems trust worthy and try returning back to your base before 4:30 P.M., before it starts getting dark.

I was told by locals that there are about 90 species of snakes in the jungles of Tioman, of which 70% are poisonous.

Drinking water is available at 2.5 MYR just outside Berjaya resort. Also there are a couple of shacks just outside Berjaya, which are very good and serve great sea food.

The Condotel accommodation at Berjaya is quite far away from the main resort, separated by their humongous golf course. The hotel runs a shuttle service every hour from Berjaya resort to the Condotel complex. It's not exactly walking distance and at times is quite irritating, especially after dinner, to wait for the shuttle service to take you back to your room. Also while Berjaya resort has it's own generator back-up, the same is not available at the Condotel apartment complex. The first day itself, there was no electricity for a couple of hours, and there was no one from Berjaya at the reception desk who could help us. Surprisingly, when the matter was brought to the notice of their front desk manager, Mr. Kevin, the next morning, he seemed unconcerned and responded that we should instead place a complaint with Malaysian Electricity department for the power failure, a response I found most inappropriate, from a resort in a tourist destination. He was bold enough to also inform us that Berjaya are not responsible for providing generator back up at the Condotel as that complex was being shared by Berjaya along with another hotel called, Selesa, Tioman. I kept wondering aloud, why we were given accommodation at the Condotel, by Berjaya, if they were not responsible for that place.

Fortunately for us, there was no further blackouts during our stay of 3 nights and 4 days, thereafter.

Surprisingly, guests need to come to the reception desk at Selesa , in order to contact the reception area or the excursion team based at the main resort at Berjaya, Tioman, as the room phones can be used to contact the desk at Condotel only, where Berjaya does not find it necessary to man the desk for the convenience of its customers. Wireless internet was slow and available only in the common reception area of both hotels.

Surprisingly for an Island resort, Berjaya did not provide the snorkelling gear, complimentary with the room. Also the full day rental for the gear is about 2.5 times the rate at which snorkelling gear is provided in the market.

Leaving a couple of unpleasant interactions with the staff at Berjaya, our stay at Tioman was thoroughly enjoyable. Relished on a lot of sea food and tropical fruits like Lychees & seeded grapes.

A must visit for nature lovers ....Robinson Crusoe beaches hidden in the tranquility of dense tropical forests ...what more can one ask for....

Room Tip: Most of the rooms at Berjaya Tioman resort do not face the beach but are a hop, skip and jump away...
