We went there by tuk tuk from Luang Prabang which is not the best choice (expensive and uncomfortable), then you take a small boat to go to cave. It is basically two caves with lots of Buddha. Honestly I was not really impressed but the place is interesting for the view. To my opinion it is only worth if you make the trip by boat from Luang Prabang. If you go by road you can skip whiskey village: only shops...

I rented a moped n enjoyed a pleasant drive here along the Mekong. Beautiful views. Would defo be better to take a boat. Got to the village and was charged 13,000 kip return for boat across to the cave. Cave admission 20,000. Terrible. Two caves with small Buddha figures. Supposedly 2500 of them. Big swing

I enjoyed the two hours boat ride up the Mekong River to this place. The languid ride opened up my eyes to the wondrous nature that Luang Prabang has got to offer: the verdant green and the brown river. Occasionally, you got to see smoke appearing from the jungles and that indicated to you there are tribes residing deeper inland. Let's hope UNESCO kept up the great work in preserving this place for future generations. What's not mentioned is that the upper cave of Pak Ou is dark inside and you need to carry a torch inside or else, you would see NOTHING. Coincidentally, there are peddlers outside selling torch lights. you got to see thousands of little Buddhas that were left behind by well-wishers and also, early remnants of Hinduism. The place is simply chocked with tourists. For me, it's the journey that's the highlight of the trip.

The caves themselves are not large but are interesting and well worth a visit. Several steps and you should take a torch. We decided against the boats that ferry you down and opted instead to spend a day kayaking down to them. I think we were lucky in having a good group to do this with. We did pass one group who we saw the Mekong currents taking past the moorings for the cave so not sure they actually saw the caves) - it wasn't dangerous but the Mekong currents are strong so once past the mooring it is difficult to get back. It took us about 1 to 1 and a half hours to reach the cave and then there was about another half hour afterwards. We also combined this with the whiskey village so it took the whole day.

Paying 200k for two people we set off to the Pak ou caves along with two Swiss girls. The trip took 2-3 hours with a stop off at the whiskey village. A dirty dusty little village that does not really leave much to the imagination. The caves are filled with thousands of Buddhas which is cool however the caves really aren't that spectacular and with 15 minutes we were back on the boat heading back. The boat ride was enjoyable but I would say if you are on a small trip to LP there are plenty of better things to do with your time.
