Paying 200k for two people we set off to the Pak ou caves along with two Swiss girls. The trip took 2-3 hours with a stop off at the whiskey village. A dirty dusty little village that does not really leave much to the imagination. The caves are filled with thousands of Buddhas which is cool however the caves really aren't that spectacular and with 15 minutes we were back on the boat heading back. The boat ride was enjoyable but I would say if you are on a small trip to LP there are plenty of better things to do with your time.

We arrived in Pak Ou Caves on a tour cruising the Mekong from Houei Sai to Luang Prabang. Beautiful weather that day, in the height of the rainy season, amazing views over surrounding scenery, as well as great culture. Little in the way of guides or any facilities but a visit here should be short, but make sure you head into the main cave- too dark to see much but a great experience

The cave itself was about two hours upstream from the LP pier. My butt was seriously sore after two hours on the hardwood "chair." Cushions were available but they were all wet due to heavy rain.

The caves (both upper and lower) were interesting.

A good way to kill a few hours.

The boat ride up the Mekong for 2 hours is a a relaxing journey towards the Pak Ou Caves where there is the Sacred Buddha site. The climb up to the lower cave is fine, and for the willing the climb up to the upper cave is worth the effort. You will need to purchase a candle for the upper cave. If for no other reason, take the time and effort to go to this site to see the high water mark on the exterior of the cave to see how high the rive rose in the bad 2008 rainy season in August. You will not believe how high the river rose.
