Ngulia Safari Camp

Admittedly the shower did not quite measure up to a 5 star hotel, but the food is good and the view and the location largely compensate. Nothing can compare to the joy of sitting on your terrace as the sun sets or rises , watching the herds of elephants and buffalos gathering at the waterhole.

There are 2 lodges under this Hotel listing. We stayed in the Ngalia Bandas, which is some 20Km from the Lodge.

Rooms are wonderful, mesh and canvas to the front wall so you can lie in bed and take in the impressive views. Large Balcony's where you can see over 2 watering holes. We saw herds and herds of elephants both days of our 2 night stay (in fact I struggled to sleep on the first night as the bellowing from the elephants kept me awake! What a hardship!)

Buffet food for most meals, but as we were there in low season we were sometimes given a set, but mixed meal. All very well prepared and tasty.

Friendly staff, comfortable rooms, good food, but what you really cant beat is probably one of the best views in Kenya!

Rooms are bandas on a hillside over a watering hole near Ngulia wildlife refuge region of Tsavo West park. Terrace with view is best feature of watering hole was best feature. Nice large rooms with two beds w/mosquito netting, refrigerator w/mini-bar. Electricity is only on certain hours, but enough to charge camera battery each day. Buffet meals were pretty good. Great soup. Vegetarian options every meal with no problems. Coffee and tea served all day. All other drinks available for a fee (200-500 ksh), including bottled water. Staff is very nice. Mice, lizards, etc... find their way into the banda, so do not keep any food in your room, even if it is packaged. We could not manage to get any hot water in our room, so it was cold water showers for us.

This lodge is in one of the most beautiful locations in Kenya. However, the lodge is run down and the service is terrible. We have stayed here many times over the last 6 years and on this most recent trip, we were shocked at how badly run down things have become. The plumbing in the rooms is terrible - shower doesn't work, loo nearly falls off the wall when you sit down. The red satin lining on the mosquito nets is more funeral parlour than safari camp and the service is terrible. The staff seemed terrified whenever we spoke to them and got even simple orders wrong. Go for the view, go for the amazing game but go with low expectations of the lodge.

I don't know if we were extremely lucky or whether my expectations are not as high as those of other travellers, but we had a really nice room! In safari style, with natural materials, 2 comfortable beds surrounded by a moscito net and with a little private balcony with a fantastic view over the valley - nothing to complain about!
Ok, it took some minutes until the water of the shower turned hot - but we had been adviced by the staff in this respect, so nothing unusual.
The food in the restaurant was very nice, the service fine and the views just breathtaking.
What made the stay in this place really adventurous and exciting was the fact that we were not allowed to walk alone from the restaurant to our room after sunset but had to be accompagnied always by staff; they told us this was because we might encounter dangerous animals even on that short way!
I would come back.

Visited Ngulia on the first night of a 2 night / 3 day safari. Fantastic lodge - yes, the rooms were basic but hey, you are out on game drives during the day so all you needed was a place to rest your head and sleep. We had a comfortable bed with a mosquito net. The location of the lodge was breathtaking, with views for miles across the rhino sanctuary. We saw elephants and leopards - coming for a drink at the watering hole as well as the bait that is hung out every night (I don't actually approve of this practice but it appears to be popular). The food was good and communal areas comfortable. I went with Julius Thuvi Safaris (http://www.juliustsafaris.com/safaris.html). Be careful there are others using his name and I almost fell for it before I found the 'real' Julius. Because of his reputation and respect within the industry, Julius secured us a room overlooking the watering hole 0 I had to keep pinching myself to know I wasn't dreaming.

If you are going to go on Safari, I would highly recommend this lodge and Julius Safaris.
