“Most amazing location”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

We stayed here for one night in September as part of a three day safari booked through JT safaris. From the moment we arrived I was speechless. The lodge is so amazing to look at, you really feel like you have arrived somewhere special. When we first arrived there was one elephant drinking from the watering hole which was incredible. We popped back to the room to get changed and when we returned there was around 100. I couldn't believe what i was seeing. There were two herds trying to get the water which led to some very interesting incidents between the groups! I could have sat forever and watched them.

During our evening meal the elephants were quite active as the watering hole was empty - i understand the lodge only fill it at certain times. Anyway this led to some tension between the elephants which at times was hard to watch as they fought over the water. But an amazing experience and I am sure i will never see anything like this again. The food was good and lots of choice at breakfast but to be honest I didn't really care as I couldn't drag myself away from the elephants for too long!

Stayed at this wonderful place for 1 night in the second week of September but i wish it could have been longer - enjoyed sitting on the terrace/bar area just watching the elephants and other animals come and go - even back in the room animals were still coming and going all night long - I did not want t go to sleep.

Will definately return on my next visit to Kenya

This was the last night out of a three night 4 days safari booked with JT safaris (see separate review). As it was our honeymoon JT arranged for us to have the best room, right next to the restauarant with the most amazing views. The elephants came really close as in the lobby downstairs there is water right next to it and it was full of elephants the whole time we were there!! This was my favourite for the fact that you could be so close to the elephants!! We saw buffalo, impala, zebras and warthogs too through the course of the evening. The food was lovely and very yummy with lots of choice, breakfast was really good! The rooms were lovely and the staff very friendly.

This was the third lodge/camp of a 6 day safari. This was our first time to Africa and after extensive research, we booked with JT Julius Safaris (separate reviews). We were not disappointed! I picked the places that my husband and I stayed and we were very pleased with them for the most part.
I picked this lodge because the reviews had all said how close the animals were when they came to drink. And that was true when there was water in the watering hole right next to the main lodge. This was the first week of September and water was being pumped into only one watering hole through a pipe. But there was so little water that (see photos) one elephant was literally sucking the water up as it dribbled from the pipe. All the other watering holes were dry. And for our entire stay, there was never water in them. We were told that water was added to the watering hole by the main lodge at certain times. It was sad to see the animals trying to get water from the mud.
We really liked the visual aspect of the lodge It was fun to walk between the main lodge to our room by way of the bridges. We asked for a room so we could see the watering hole and they changed our room to #216 which was great! It was in the first group of 4 round sets of rooms. Each round "pod" has two rooms, an upper and lower. Ours was an upper room. It had the hotel feel, which being part of a hotel chain was expected. We thought the room had all the basics that were needed and was very clean. It had a nice breeze when the windows were open as it was a hot time of the year. It also had a ceiling fan.
The main lodge was three levels. Registration, fireplace pit and seating for waterhole viewing, and tunnel viewing were on level one. Level two had the dining room (serves breakfast and dinner only - lunch is at the sister lodge just up the road) and level three had the bar. All the levels had winding stairs, so be aware. Also know that you get to the sets of rooms on each side of the dining room and if it is raining, the pathways are not covered. Everything was nicely appointed and clean. The birds were very aggressive. If fact, one bird swooped down and literally took a biscuit out of a guest's hand as he was bringing it to his mouth causing him to spill his coffee! The breakfast was nice with the usual fare. We thought dinner good, but not as good or have the variety as the other camps. We felt like the dinning room was too small for the number of tables. Getting up, your chair bumped the chair behind and it was impossible to get by someone if they were standing in the isle. But the waiters were all very nice.
Overall, the lodge was nice and very unique. Our only issues were the lack of water in the watering hole (none the morning we were there) and the crowded dining.
We do want to thank Arthur and Eunice at the reception desk for taking extremely good care of us as well as being so nice and friendly! We also wish to thank Kevin.

.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the watering hole next to the main lodge.

The hotel is beautifully planned and executed property with well furnished rooms, the age of the hotel slightly catching up but overall the experience was superb. I really enjoyed the Salt lick by the Elephants. giraffes and wild buffalo which can be viewed in very close touchable proximity from the lobby and from the viewing tunnel. Nothing can beat that experience at such close quarters and well protected environ.

Room Tip: All rooms were really good ask for the ones on the lower deck for more proximity to the animals.

This was our third visit and it never disappoints, the lodge is magical, all on stilts, the food is is really good, staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are lovely but the watering hole is the main attraction, elephants come to drink and are so close takes my breath away every time. A water buffalo climbed up the water fall when we were here this time, never know what will happen with wild animals, thank you for making this lodge so special, been all over Kenya in the eleven time we have been but this is the lodge I would recommend to friends to visit every time!
