“Superb!”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Salt Lick One of the best lodges I have stayed in, You get up close to the animals at the drinking hole.
The underground viewing point was a first for us and we enjoyed watch an inquisitive baby elephant.
We had superb rooms overlooking the reserve and drinking holes. Staff friendly, food was excellent.
My only gripe was our noisy neighbours, not the wildlife type!

We had a single night stay as part of a safari package. Salt Lick is a very unique concept where you can very game ( mostly) elephant up close at the lodge due to the watering hole. The sanctuary only revealed mostly elephant and buck to us, but a great number of birds. The underground viewing point ( reached by tunnel from the lobby) is very good interesting idea and gives some real close up views ( particularly if an elephant is using the roof for a scratching post. Staff were great, food average, rooms smallish but fine with nice views. Most enjoyable but not a place I would revisit soon.

Room Tip: If don't mind steps ask for a upstairs room so as to avoid noises coming from above you. Floors...

this place is a bit basic but the opportunity to be close to wildlife is amazing. The food was great and its a good place to base safaris from. We saw lions and elephants. There is no pool and there is no fitness area but there is a bar and the open area around the reception is where you can sit and look eye to eye with the wildlife as they drink from the lake there is also a tunnel out to the pond where the animals gather to drink and socialize and there is always activity day and night there. Rooms are small but adequate and they all have showers and toilets

Sat within the privately owned Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary Salt Lick is certainly the most visually stunning lodge of the three that we stayed in; its design makes it unique and quirky with the waterhole having the most abundance of wildlife drifting in for a drink, with its elevated position it gives unrivalled views. You can sit on the open terrace with a drink and look across the savannah to the Taita Hills while watching Elephant, Buffalo and many more animals come down for a drink.

Another unique feature of this lodge is an underground hide that is accessed by tunnel from the main lodge; this gives you a completely different perspective of the wildlife you are looking at. Very up close and personal.

My only reservation regarding Salt Lick is that it’s on three levels connected by a central spiral staircase with reception on the ground floor, which if you have difficulty walking as my wife does, you seem to be forever either going up or down stairs, not too much of a problem if your only there for one night but it is worth considering if you plan a longer stay.
The Staff are extremely friendly, helpful and make you very welcome. Check in was simple and a made a pleasure by the very pretty receptionist, one thing to remember is that you will have to present a copy of your passport at each lodge you visit so it might be an idea to get some copies before you go, we were lucky that our base hotel Turtle Bay did some photocopies for us before we left for our Safari.

The rooms are on the small side due to the round shape, but are clean and well-furnished in keeping with the age of the lodge, it has a large bed but still very hard mattress, and they include tea/coffee make facilities and a hair dryer and plenty of storage for your clothes. The bathroom is again on the small side but more than adequate for our needs with plenty of towels and complimentary toiletries if you need them. All the room seem to benefit from having a view over the waterhole.

Meal times are the usual buffet affair. The food was very good well cooked with a nice choice and plenty of it, you won’t leave hungry.

Overall our experience of Salt Lick was very good, we would definitely recommend it, and only marred by the fact it marked the end of our Safari, but we did get to see Lions on the last evening game drive, so close to the minibus you could smell them, yet another memory to put in the memory bank along with many others from our short visit to this amazing country.

A magical place where elephants inhabit your garden ! The rooms were cosy (we had a double and a single in one room) but very well furnished but the centrepieces of the hotel is the watering hole overlooked by the reception, restaurant and bar over three floors. The food was very good in the restaurant with a special ambiance of anticipation as you wait for the animals to appear out of the dark. We were fortunate to spend 45 minutes with a solitary bull elephant. Additionally there are the brightly coloured starlings and the hornbills that visit during the day along with many other animals around the watering hole (zebra, waterbuck, wildebeest etc.). It is also worth going down the tunnel to get a water level view of the animals. A very special place.

We stayed here on our last night of a 3 night/4 day Safari with JT Safaris (See separate review).
This unique lodge and set up with the watering hole right next to the lodge gives you incredible views of the visiting wildlife - from Elephants to Baboons they all come here.....there is also a tunnel that leads to a observation "bubble" to get an even better angle. There are a few signs up about keeping quiet and do not use flash photography but still some idiots ignored this rule and badly startled a herd of Elephants....I have nothing but contempt for these people! Obey the rules and turn you flash off you still get great shots of the wildlife and bird life. The circular rooms were great fun and the one we had for the night gave a great view of the water hole. The restaurant also offerer super views over the water hole and surrounding area and the standard of food matches the quality of this with excellent service and friendly helpful staff.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the waterhole is great....but if you want a "quiet" night chose one awa...
