“Once in a lifetime experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

This is a lodge that gives you an experience you cannot get elsewhere. The interior decor, general ambience and the service is impeccable. The restaurant and bar are very uniquely set, giving a great dining experience. The rooms are suspended on stilts and animals criss ross underneath - quite an interesting setup. Most memorable was the experience in the underground tunnels which gave me some unnerving excitement as I came about 10mts close to the elephants. I could feel them breathe on me!

Room Tip: Any room facing the watering hole will do

Stayed at Salt Lick way back in 1994, although many years ago still remember vividly what a fantastic time we had here. Stayed one night only as part of 2 day safari travelling from diani beach area (Africana Sea Lodge) to Tsavo stopping off at Voi Lodge for lunch and Taita Hills for another break and a swim. At the time Salt Lick was run by Hilton Hotels and the food was excellent. Our rooms were very good standard and the best of all was after dinner having a drink in the bar and seeing the elephants coming for a drink at the watering holes nearby. As you approach Salt Lick from a distance you can't help being impressed by its unique construction the rooms have curved walls being circular and on stilts. We also did an overnight stay at Shimba Hills lodge much closer to Diani Beach area which was also fantastic experience. I want to return for another holiday to Kenya this time with a child and would not hesitate to take my son here.

If its your first trip to Kenya and your staying on the Diani Beach Resort then definately book a 2 day safari to Tsavo national Park and stay at Sarova Salt lick Game Lodge, you will not be disappointed. Fantastic hospitality, the lodge is set right in the middle of the reserve with magnificent views of a waterhole where, elephants, giraffe, water buffalo and many more widlife come wondering too drink and bathe. The rooms are built on large pillars- don't worry you are high enough up so that a lion couldnt get at you. ;-) Being in the middle of know where you will be amazed by the facilities of the game lodge there is everything you would need in your room, hot running water, fresh towels, hair dryer tea making facilities. Above all its quite a romantic setting. At night you have to walk quitely over the swing like walkways- to the restaurant from your room. The restaurant is buffet style, lets just say you wont be disappointed. In the reception area its open to the elements where you can sit quietly and have a drink and see the elelphants congregrate as the hotel has a large fresh water pool running partly around the main building - you will be amazed how extremely close to the elephants you are. You will have your camera in hand at all times there is so much to take in, you can't quite believe where you are and what wildlife your seeing
Staying here You do realise that you are in the animals space but you are safe and there are plenty of game wardens around and for safety reasons you just have to respect the rules of the lodge.
A must visit if you want a 2 day taster of a safari.

Room Tip: all rooms are really good , but just incase make sure you can view the big watering hole.

We stayed here on our last night of our safari. It was really unusal as it is on stilts and the animals all gather round the water holes below the hotel. There are various levels in the reception area to view the animals and also a bunker under ground so you view the animals from ground level. If you are an elephant lover (and who isn't?) this is the place for you. There was never less than 20 elephants at any one time. And also during the night as occasionally they roared and woke you from your sleep - I didn't mind this at all!
The lodge itself was excellent - the rooms were clean and comfortable and the food was adequate. We only had one meal and a very quick breakfast so was hard to compare to other lodges we had stayed in.
The staff were very friendly - all Kenyans appear to be very friendly!
I would recommend this lodge and would return myself in the future.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the water holes!

We recently stayed overnight at the salt Lick Lodge during our 2 day safari. We chose to pay a little extra to stay here as it was unique and it was well worth it. The rooms are minimal but still have space and everything you need. We were really pleased to find a kettle so we could make ourselves a cup of tea after a long day.
Very busy during mealtimes but we managed to find a table everytime so not really a problem. Cant recommend it enough only wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the facilities more.

We went together with my wife and 2 years old daughter and were very pleasantly surprised.
Animals coming for a drink are so close, it feels a bit strange at first (zoo like feeling), but it quickly disappears when you realise you are the one surrounded by walls and animal stick to their business without paying much attention to you.
Accomodation was very nice and food was good.

We loved this place. The pods were bigger than we expected. Each pod is two rooms, one on top of the other. The eaves of the upper floor lodges are open (meshed) so the noise from the animals right outside can keep you awake at night. It's like being in a tent but with solid walls. You definitely feel like you are there in the thick of it.

Staff very friendly. Food was fine. Room was beautiful, immaculately clean and very comfortable. It far exceeded any expectations I had.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have an excellent view of the watering hole. The upper rooms have open (meshed)_eav...
