Im giving this 4 stars because at night, there is a floodlit tree that is bated for the visit of the leopards which are joined by hyena , elephants and even a porcupine - the animal visitations were wonderful - the "hotel" was not so hot .

To begin with, there is no power until 6pm each evening and it goes off at midnight and only one plug socket in our room (19) so charging cameras, using any electrical gadgets or just using the much needed fan in the room , was impossible except by relay . By the time we wanted to shower , all the hot water was gone - not acceptable although we do understand the difficulties of relying on solar power .
The swimming pool was round the back of the car park, with no sun beds, no towels , just one bench so not a chill out zone really .

Food was better than at the previous nights Voi Lodge but again, beds were hard , not enough pillows , the ones which were there were old and smelly .

I know people would like you to complain at the time but on a whistle stop tour , there is no time to make a complaint - it needs some TLC but for the leopards and the hyena , I have to give it a half decent review .

Room Tip: Dont know , we were in room 19 which was basic , one plug socket and no hot water !

Last stayed here 6 years ago. Don't think they have done anything to improve the place since.
Food - very poor
Service - poor
Rooms - poor
Price of Drinks - very expensive
Overall - The only thing the place has going for it is the visit of the Leopard

Place needs a complete overall - buildings and staff

Would I go there again? NO !

Good things
The best view what you van have during breakfast and dinner ,a very beautiful sun rise in the morning with amazing atmosphere and a brilliant sunset .
Food is reasonable
Rooms clean and again during sleeping you will hear the animals at the waterhole….fantastic!!
In the three times I have been there I never have used the pool as there is so much to see at the hotel, I have heard that the water is very cold.
Many animals around the hotel at night they put the meet in the tree and all three times I’ve been there I have seen the leopard but this time also a hyena afterwards. Later a porcupine came over..
It is one off the best places to drink a glass of wine with you loved ones and watch the sunset…

Tips: When it is busy make a reservation for a good position at the waterhole during dinner.
Wake up early and enjoy the sunrise

the location is excellent. the food was above average and the common area was enjoyable and it made me want to kick back and drink a few Tuskers. The Leopard baiting worked as two leopards showed up and fought and ran off into the night. one came back an hour later to dine on the hanging meat. the fight occurred right at 6:30pm (this is when they hang it) so i would try to be there then.

the rooms were terribly outdated and the bathroom smelled like urine. seeing some pics, i'm guessing that they are renovating but certainly they have not reached our rooms. aside from this, each room had a balcony which was inviting.

i would be tempted to recommend the property because of the leopard baiting and it was an enjoyable area to have dinner/drinks. i would preface it with the rooms are those of a highway motel however. it was my understanding that another ngulia property that was fairly close by is more upscale and they too have access to have dinner at this sight and watch the leopard baiting. i think i would opt for this should i come back.

as time permits, ask some of the employees about what happened to the night watchman some years ago.

we stayed here at the recommendation of fred kilonzi of Safari HITS, who we used for our safari. Alex was our driver and we were very happy. It was an inexpensive spot with a great common area large (and good) food selection and excellent wildlife all around. while the room was not great, i was very happy with the recommendation.

Room Tip: be there early for the leopard baiting and visit the nearby rhino sanctuary that has plenty of wildl...

We stayed in this lodge 1 night during a 4-day safari and it was my favourite lodge. Our room had a balcony with amazing views of a sweeping valley intersected by a river. Lots of elephants came to drink from the river and even at night time we could hear them. Some reviews mentioned that the lodge is ugly, but I liked the modernist architecture of the building, which is made from grey stones that blend in with the surrounding rocky landscape very well.

The lodge also has drivers' quarters, which meant that our driver didn't have to go far when he picked us up for game drives. Drivers were having meals in the same restaurant as us with access to the same quality buffet, which is also a feature I liked.

The room was very clean, no insects at all (as claimed in other reviews). Windows have mosquito nets and so do the beds. Good shower with lots of pressure.

The pool is a decent size, deep and definitely big enough for a proper swim. Not a "plunge pool", as claimed in another review (some people really have strange expectations...). Views from the pool area are breathtaking.

The outdoors covered buffet restaurant and leopard bar overlook a waterhole. You can sip one of their safari-themed cocktails whilst watching animals coming to the waterhole drinking and interacting nearly in touching distance. That night we saw a hyena (!!!), porcupines and lots of elephants. Food was excellent. A wide selection of warm and cold dishes, all fresh. Of the 3 lodges we stayed at, the food was by far the best at this lodge. Service was very friendly and personal, as it usually is in Kenya.

The famous leopard came on time at 7pm to retrieve the small piece of meat they hang up for him/her. It should be said that this is not a circus (as claimed in some other reviews). It's a properly wild leopard and not always the same one. I was told sometimes several leopards even come to fight over the meat. Don't miss this opportunity to see a leopard because it is very unlikely you will catch a glimpse of one in the wild.

Don't miss Ngulia lodge on your safari circuit. It is in the middle of the park and offers a very immediate experience of Tsavo West.

Room Tip: there are rooms overlooking the waterhole, but from the rooms with river/valley views you also see a...

As per previous comments, the location is stunning, no doubt about that. The rooms are very basic however we expected that having read reviews on here.

Food - We ate from the buffet, this was very disorganised. Food was not very good at Dinner or Breakfast.
Staff - Not as friendly as you might expect for Kenya however they still expect a tip. Being British we dont tip as a matter of course, only if earned. A porter showed us to our room on arrival however carried no luggage, then hung around for ages, showing us views from windows saying he had organised it for us, ended up almost closing the door on him as he wouldnt leave, we were knackered from safari and could have done without that.
Rooms - Very basic, didnt mind this and expected it.
Location - Quite simply amazing, we saw the leopard going for the meat. However the best part was sitting with a pint after a long day a couple of metres away from a family of elephants drinking in a water hole. Priceless.

Overall, we are very glad we stayed here, the food could be better and the staff can be more understanding however dont let this put you off staying here as it is worth it for its location and the animals you will see.

We stayed here for one night during our 3 night safari. This lodge may be more basic very clean and comfortable, it had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were so friendly. The food was great with good selections and very fresh.
The views were amazing and waking up in the morning and looking out of the balcony and seeing hundreds of buffalo is a sight i will never forget.
They feed a leopard each night, is it staged? not sure but was fabulous to watch! Had a fantastic Safari here thanks to our driver Fredrrick.
