“Wonderful location”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

We stopped here for lunch on day one of our safari. It is on a hillside with fantastic views over the plains. You can watch the elephants approaching from miles away to drink at the waterhole in front of the lodge.
The food for lunch was lovely with a good choice of meats, fish, salads and veg. The drinks were very reasonably priced at the bar.
Go down to the viewing tunnel go get a fantastic view of the elephants drinking.

Stayed there for one night during our safari. The view is amazing; the water hole down the hill attracts all kind of animals, especially elephants. Also there is a kind of bunker where you can go and get really close to the animals and have the opportunity to some nice close-ups and pictures. (It is the first time when I saw the man in a cage and the animal free  ) The rooms are nice, pretty old though, but we have been told that this is the oldest lodge in Kenya. Please be really aware of the baboons, and lock your windows, not only close. They know how to open a window which is not locked and they are very good thieves. We watched them from the pool as they stolen a lot of thing from a room. The food was ok, but during breakfast and dinner the restaurant is too dark, they are not putting some light not even above the buffet, and we did not really enjoy that part. Practically you do not know what exactly you are eating.
The lodge is exactly in the park, not just outside like another Voi Lodge (I think the other one name is Voi Lodge wildlife, and it is not as nice as this one- we had lunch there on our last safari day).
The front desk staff are very nice and operative so you practically do not have to wait at all either for check in or check out.

We stayed here for 1 night food was ok no problems good breakfast views while we were eating are great. Lunch and dinner good pleanty of choice. The rooms are small so would only stay 1 or 2 nights safari was fab loved the night and early morning safari. Loved the watering hole with the elephants and monkeys. Overall no problems and did everything we wanted it to do.

Room Tip: All rooms are good

stayed her in december, the view are stunning, the watering holes a the best you can get close to the aniamals as the view tunnel ends very close to the watering hole, food ok not the best, we was very luck to see 2 famliy of elephants while we was there, there is a few steps down to the viewing tunnel, but well worth it

The lodge is great according the pictures but the reality is somewhat different. The lodge is old and it has been starting to show but nothing you can handle. The personnel is friendly but you get this feeling that they are just trying to be friendly. The food is poor to average. But these are the downsides. The upside is the view. It was the most beautiful views i have ever seen. The logde is situated on a hillside so you can see miles and miles away to the savannah. In the front of the hotel is two watering holes where elephants spends their day. You can enjoy the view from your room balcony or you can go closer by using a kind of bunker which is build next to the watering holes. This way you can see the elephants up close without disturbing them. Two stars for the lodge and five stars to the landscape

Had lunch here as part of our safari and have got to say that other than the view it was really bad. We arrived and headed towards the restaurant where there was a sign saying "restaurant closed". This was about 1230hrs however we hung about waiting until it opened. When it opened and we ate, the food (buffet) was really basic and didnt taste much of anything althougth the worst of it was that we were watched by their staff members (honestly). Our meal was complimentary of the safari and the drinks we paid for up front whilst the restaurant was closed so why they needed to watch us we will never know. Almost immediatley after you finished your plate or drink it was taken from you. We never left a tip and had a few dirty looks from some of them when we walked off. The joke of this was that when we were outside admiring the view (which was amazing) a manager approached us asking if we had not paid for a glass of wine. It wasnt us and told the manager who then told us it was one of their new trainees that had let the customer leave without paying and unfortunately the trainee will now be paying for it out of her wages. I checked with our safari guide and he said that this was common practice. They should be ashamed of themselves. Absolutely disgraceful. This is a famous lodge but dont expect too much, I did and was really disappointed.

It seems Kenya had its big tourism boom in the 60s and 70s when many of the hotels were built. And seem like many haven't been touched since. The Voi Safari Lodge is no exception. I stayed for one night as part of my safari package. My room had so many insects hovering around the light. Signs on the window warned me not to leave the window open (despite having insect screens) in case the cheeky baboons ransacked the joint in your absence. One would have thought to secure the moveable insect screens so you can have a breeze in your room since there's no air conditioning. The mosquito net seemed a little pointless given the area it was meant to safeguard was big enough to cover two beds with space in between them so it's hard to get the insect out of this area in the first place. Do you bother to enclose the insects in with you?! The shower didn't appear clean and water would fill in the recess due to a blockage. There isn't a screen or shower curtain which means water just escapes everywhere around the bathroom. And the lighting in the main dining area is just the worst. It could be the yellow 'insect repelling' qualities but whatever it is, it's dim and makes you want to hurry up your dining experience to get out of the place. But watch your step on your way out. On the good side, the watering hole viewing dugout is great, despite not seeing any animals at the pond (the dugout is not good for claustrophobics). And the views from the rooms are fantastic. Baboons playing nearby and birds circle around the resort. An issue over an accidentally unpaid drinks bill (US$3) where they tracked down my guide while we were on safari didn't endear me to the place. Really, the cost and effort of getting that $3 was much more than $3.

Room Tip: The walkways to the rooms reverberate with the foot traffic so ask for a room furthest away from rec...
