Having just come back from our latest visit to Kulalu, all I can say is, that it never disappoints.
The staff and food were as wonderful as always, and the setting is just idyllic on the banks of the river.
One of the reasons we keep returning is because of the Galana Conservancy and the wonderful wildlife it attracts. Every visit seems to get better than the last and we saw so much wildlife that there really is no need to go into the National Park which costs more.
You don't even need to leave the camp to see action. Quite often it happens right in front of your eyes across the river.
To fully appreciate this little piece of heaven I would recommend at least a three night stay and staying in camp one morning without going out at dawn.
If you want a small and intimate camp with a real bush experience, then this place is for you.

Room tip: Tents 1-4 are on the river. 5 is set back a bit.

We have been visiting this lovely intimate camp on the Galana river for 10 years now, this being probably visit number 12. We have always enjoyed its delicious food, friendly staff, and of course its position on the edge of the river. Its easy access to the Galana Conservancy ensures you are surrounded by game, and with no fences, you really feel at one with nature.

Our last trip, was quite extraordinary. We started the day with a early morning game drive, on which we were impressed by the variety of game and the significant amount of elephant. We stumbled upon a tired lioness, dozing off her night of hunting. We were very pleased with our drive, and arrived back at the camp just as 5 big bill elephant were approaching the camp on the same side of the river. We raced back to camp in time to see them arrive outside. One in particular seemed quite bold, and took time to stand for photos. Whilst the other 4 hung back, this big male followed us into the camp. He seemed quite at home walking between the mess tent and tent 1 down to the grass and reeds by the river. To our delight, he proceeded to chomp his way through the gardens, pulling the odd branch from a tree, and demolishing the succulent bushes. He had a dust bath right next to the bar, then fell asleep for an hour, wobbling from one side to the other. He was so close to the decking, we could have reached over and touched him. After his snooze he again took to trimming back all the tasty vegetation up along in front of tents 2 & 3, climbing up on the path to reach the flowers. In the late afternoon heat, he amazed us by actually lying down in front of us! He slept for approximately 15 minutes! Then, probably overcome by heat, he got up, wiped his eye with his trunk, flapped his ears, and lay down again on the other side for another 15 minutes. It was extraordinary! Such a wonderful experience seeing this huge beautiful creature actually out for the count and snoring!!! When he awoke, he chomped his way through another bush, then decided it was time to rejoin his buddies outside the camp for the evening walk to wherever. It was such a treat for us, and a day that we will never forget. We actually felt bereft after our 'pet' elephant left after spending 8 wonderful hours with us.
Quite remarkably, whilst we were so engrossed with the elephant, we noticed that although it was a very dry time of year, there were no animals on the bank opposite coming to drink as they usually do. After a while, we noticed why. There were 5 lion on the bank, one young male, three lionesses and a cub. Quite remarkable, and just another 'wow' to add to our unbelievable day.

Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Kulalu who also shared that special day with us in amazement.

What an amazing camp set right on the banks of the river. We stayed 2 nights there October 2015 and thought the setting , animals, food, staff, company were all excellent.
Special Thanks to Bush, Justiss and Hassar our driver. We were really lucky and saw an amazing array of beautiful animals in their own natural surroundings perfect. We stayed in tent number 1 and will definitely return again.
THANK YOU
