Came to the kitaani kya ndundu Tsavo Safari Camp from Norway in February 2012 and stayed for a week. The camp is like nothing I have ever seen before. The photos and the website really does it no justice whatsoever. The tents were great fun with en-suite bathroom, the food was amazing, the pool was lovely, the staff friendly, welcoming and always willing to help. A big thanks to Mr Desai for telling me so many wonderful stories of the history of the camp. Last and not least many thanks to Meera Desai for making me and my family and friends feel truely looked after.

The camp itself is wonderful. I can assure anyone thinking about going you will have an amazing time. In fact I think I will be travelling there again soon.

I must strongly object to the review by rdmandel (not his real initials -not really from Colorado) calling it a nightmare. We were on that trip with the author and he wrote the bad review to punish the owner for not giving him a free stay, which he sorely wanted and begged for continually. The camp was magnificent and could not have been more hospitable, the food was fantastic and the staff extremely friendly and polite, and nothing was too much trouble. The outings were well supervised and the bush breakfast by the river, and the sundowner drink settings highly memorable- the pool a quiet oasis. I will definitely go back, and bring friends. The river crossing was difficult, yes, but we went with full knowledge that it was rainy season and the country was in flood. Meera even sorted out free park entrances for us all. Why should a camp put us all up for the night and feed us 3 extra meals, for nothing? It was not their fault the river came up so high. Shame on you

Room Tip: I would advise travellers to go out on a bush breakfast by the river, and to go the top of the Yatta plateau for sundowner drinks to really get the most out of their experience.

Coming to Tsavo Safari Camp was the best decision I made in a long time to rest for a few days and feel like I'm in the middle of an oases! A total place of relaxation and prefect for letting your mind & soul dangle and 'refuel'. Watching the birds right in front of my tent and heading to the pool right after was just brilliant!! The staff is wonderful and the food delicious. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Front row to river, if available!

We came here with 26 family members after our wedding. We had a fantastic experience. Very comfortable accomodations, great food, and friendly staff. We had meals on the sandy beach and walks up the Yatta Plateau for sundowners. We would highly recommend Tsavo Safari Camp for family trips.

Tsavo Safari Camp is such a wonderful and unique experience that it is hard for me to share the secret. But I shall. Reminiscent of the hunting lodges of the beginning of the last century, this elegant tented camp gives the feeling of remoteness and personal connection with the wildlife.

Located on the remote side of the Athi River, one is ferried across in a small boat, leaving your vehicle and connection to the outside world on the other side. Although not entirely, because you do have cell phone and internet connection.

Situated in Tsavo East National Park, the most unusual attribute of this camp is that you can hike and explore on your own. In all the other parks you are encapsulated in your vehicle (for mostly good reasons), but one has little opportunity to encounter the wildlife in person. They do provide an experienced guide who keeps his eyes open for hippos while you birdwatch or walk along the river.

Before arriving at Tsavo Safari Camp, enjoy a game drive through Tsavo West National Park and Mzima Springs and you will quickly encounter large mammals and interesting birds. Then head for the remoteness of TSC, cross the river, and rewind 90 years into the past.

The accommodations are very comfortable tents with nice showers and warm water (but you have to wait a while for it). Lights are kerosine lanterns or solar lights. One finds electricity in the main lodge provided by a generator, so you can charge your batteries while having a cool (or warm if you prefer) Tusker Beer or other drink of your choice. Meals are simply exquisite - complex sauces, interesting combinations, and well served. The staff are kind, interesting and extremely well trained. You do not encounter the hovering plate-hawks that are found at most of the lodges. Rather, an attentive and non-intrusive staff who cater to all your needs.

Prices are very reasonable as are the "extras" such as drinks and etc.

This is not for everyone. The wildlife are there but shy and you have to work to see the large animals. But you will likely hear hyaenas and hippos as you roll into bed, and you will see abundant crocodiles in the river (remember the boat?). I heard frogs while swimming in the pool. The birding is great. If this level of "roughing it" makes you uncomfortable, don't go.

I am most grateful to the management and staff for their kindness, thoughtfulness and warmth. I cannot wait to share this with family and friends and we will return (for longer)the next time.

Room Tip: choose a tent on the river
