Reviewed March 6, 2013

We booked our first safari through escape worldwide which started 15th february 2013. after an overnight flight from heathrow and a 4 hour drive to the acc we were very pleasantly surprised to find this gem of a place ! we had no real idea what to expect on our first trip to the real africa but our first stay here was truly amazing! where else would you be able to have a beer and watch warthogs ,giraffe and many other animals just wandering on the grounds.this is a beautiful place to stay and the staff are really welcoming and helpful ,we stayed here again before going on to stay up at the ark and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. in fact we enjoyed our holiday so much we are going to do it again soon and we hope to include a stay at the aberdare.you must stay here! so relaxing and pleasant! full marks from us!

Room Tip: they are to a high standard so i doubt you would have any problems!

I returned to the ACC two months after my last visit, and was pleased to find that I was the only guest, due to seasonal lulls and the nature of tour group scheduling. As a result, I enjoyed personalized service throughout this renovated colonial-era property. Many hotels and lodges in the Aberdares/ Mount Kenya area (Treetops and Outspan, for example) have really gone downhill in recent years. The Aberdares Country Club was possibly on a similar path before being purchased by the Marasa group, which owns properties in southern Africa. The renovations to the rooms over the past year have been splendid, and they are now easily the most comfortable in the area. Clean, modern, yet still with rustic touches like fireplaces and hot water bottles (needed, since it gets bloody cold in this part of Kenya). The food has also come a long way in the past few months, thanks to Chef Deepak. I know I likely won’t always be able to order custom curries, but the lunch and dinner menu is always delicious with great presentation. The breakfast is a little below par, especially compared to the other meals, but in my opinion doesn’t meet the standard for the property. Otherwise though, great place to relax and be based for a few days in central Kenya.

We travelled there with family from Kenya, arriving on Saturday lunch and leaving Sunday mid morning. It is only a couple of hours drive from Nairobi and very easily accesible even if you don't have a 4x4. Only the last few hundred metres are not tarmac/asphalt.

Arriving at the gates you go through the formalities and then drive alongside the golf course, a golf course with zebra, giraffe and warthog. Not something I am used to seeing.

The cottages are well appointed, each cottage has 2 roooms a double and a twin with adjoining doors. We had requested a double room each so were put in adjacent cottages.

Be warned, if you are not exactly fleet of foot there is a lot of stairs to climb and at altitude this really knocks the wind out of you. We had a room behind the main restaurant and club, sadly it was also behind a number of large trees surrounding the car park so we could here the noise as people arrived, this was not a problem much after 3pm.

The Country Club itself is a stopping off point for those on their way to The Ark, lunch service was very busy, but for dinner we were less than 10 people in the place.

Through it all however there was a common theme, the staff's friendliness and helpfulness, particularly towards the 2 children in the party of 6. Ages 16 and 7 mths.

The food on the Saturday evening was superb, the lamb was tasty, tender and well cooked. At breakfast the following morning the first person to get a good morning and a hello was our son, the staff were all over him.

The views from the veranda and terrace are amazing, although get up early if you want to catch a glimpse of Mt Kenya without the cloud covering it.

If I was to point out any flaws, I would say the cutlery in the restaurant is cheap and nasty, not even nice to hold, you get better on planes. Also the beds have foam mattresses and although wide enough they are mp where near long enough, my Wife is not a giant and I am aroudn 5'10" but both our feet were well out of the end of the bed.

One final negative, but completely out of anyones control, the noise from the hyrax at 3am, sounded like a horror movie, carried on for about 2 hrs, a pair of them chatting back and forth, as I said can't do anything about that, don't want nature then don't go to Kenya!

Value for money was very good as well, full board and plenty of drinks for just over $200 per couple.

We spent a night at the Country Club after a one night stay at their sister property The Ark. Absolutely beautiful setting and scenery. The property has undergone a cosmetic revamp and the rooms were comfortable and tastefully furnished. One word of warning, be prepared to climb many stairs to and from the dining area especially if you get a cottage located further away.

Service was attentive and efficient even though the hotel was fully booked. The chef who is fairly new took the time to speak personally to all of the guests enquiring about quality of food, specific dietary requirements and general feedback.

There is nothing much to do at the Club and because it gets particularly chilly, I don't think that swimming in the beautiful pool is always an option. I was told that there is a gym and spa on the property but there was no information provided regarding these services.

That being said I would recommend Aberdare Country Club as a stopover to The Ark and for some relaxation time in gorgeous surroundings.

Finally, the map on the hotel website cannot be downloaded and we did get lost at one point. This is something that needs to be attended to especially if guests are on self-drive....

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the main reception area....

My return to the Aberdare Country club was characterized by a lot of mixed feelings seeing that our last visit 2 years ago was anything but pleasant. Our tour company informed us that the hotel was now under new management and that alot had improved and so we decided to give it a try.

The new management has definitely given the Aberdares a much needed facelift. The facility has been renovated and the rooms are now more cosy, clean and tastefully decorated.

The service has definitely improved and during our stay, the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Issues and queries raised were attended to promptly. A lot of effort was put to ensure that the guests had a lovely time.

The meals were fantastic with a variety of delicacies to choose from. As a special touch, the chef always went around interacting with the guests to ensure that their culinary needs were being met.

On the downside, the communication at the facility was bad as all the phones in the rooms were not working. One had to walk all the way to the reception to make enquiries or requests.

All in all, we had a good time.

One never expects things to go wrong on holidays, but when they did, the response from staff at the ACC was both professional and deeply sincere. If it were not for the observant room staff who noticed our absence that night, the persistent front-desk officers that contacted security and KWS rangers, we may still be stranded in the Nat. Park. The warm reception on our return was met out by management, restaurant staff, back office staff, cleaners, security, even the grounds man who cleaned our car, and is a credit to the professionalism of hotel management and the high calibre of all the ACC staff. Our recuperation was greatly helped by the stunning views and garden setting, the cosy fire-lit rooms and hearty kitchen. Recommend this hotel to those who want a luxury safari experience along with warm, genuine Kenyan hospitality.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Aberdare Country Club, only a three-hour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was selected by an English couple who had decided to settle in the land of their choosing - Kenya. It all happened many years ago; their children grew up there, but then moved on to different places. After almost half a century, their home, "The Steep", was sold and re-named "The Aberdare Country Club". Even though the property was developed beyond the imaginings of the original owners, they would be pleased with how carefully it has been nurtured and the grandeur it has maintained. This is highlighted in Monty Brown's book, "Haven Under the Hill" which says: "Today, despite the fast-changing tempo of the outside world, the old home still retains that comfortable, solid feeling based on traditions from a time when life proceeded at a far more leisurely and gentle pace". The Club's 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary is teeming with eland, impalas, zebras, giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with a profusion of colour, and with peacocks living within the lush green lawns. Walking through this unspoiled terrain is paradise. Play a round of golf, watched by a family of warthog, or fish for trout, play tennis or just relax by the pool within the beautiful gardens. From here you can see the sunset with the stunning Aberdare Mountains as a backdrop. ... more   less
