Aberdare Country Club
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 31, 2012

My return to the Aberdare Country club was characterized by a lot of mixed feelings seeing that our last visit 2 years ago was anything but pleasant. Our tour company informed us that the hotel was now under new management and that alot had improved and so we decided to give it a try.

The new management has definitely given the Aberdares a much needed facelift. The facility has been renovated and the rooms are now more cosy, clean and tastefully decorated.

The service has definitely improved and during our stay, the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Issues and queries raised were attended to promptly. A lot of effort was put to ensure that the guests had a lovely time.

The meals were fantastic with a variety of delicacies to choose from. As a special touch, the chef always went around interacting with the guests to ensure that their culinary needs were being met.

On the downside, the communication at the facility was bad as all the phones in the rooms were not working. One had to walk all the way to the reception to make enquiries or requests.

All in all, we had a good time.

One never expects things to go wrong on holidays, but when they did, the response from staff at the ACC was both professional and deeply sincere. If it were not for the observant room staff who noticed our absence that night, the persistent front-desk officers that contacted security and KWS rangers, we may still be stranded in the Nat. Park. The warm reception on our return was met out by management, restaurant staff, back office staff, cleaners, security, even the grounds man who cleaned our car, and is a credit to the professionalism of hotel management and the high calibre of all the ACC staff. Our recuperation was greatly helped by the stunning views and garden setting, the cosy fire-lit rooms and hearty kitchen. Recommend this hotel to those who want a luxury safari experience along with warm, genuine Kenyan hospitality.

Lovely place to spend time quietly. The rooms were clean, food was good, service very attentive. Took a guided run (giraffe, zebra, warthog and gazelles all round) where former Lewa marathoners have practiced before - tough hills, beautiful view on Mt. Kenya, clean crisp air - the very best time. The afternoon spent at The Ark was wonderful, Elephants, bufallos less then 100m away.

My return to the Aberdare Country Club took 'just' 15 years since my last visit but from all I heard about it I had mixed feelings. Closed for a while by previous owners Fairmont Kenya which left a fine safari inn property remain empty for apparently years, upon takeover by the Marasa Africa hotel group from Uganda something had to happen.
And to my pleasant surprise things did happen in Mweiga.
The cottages presented themselves in a new shine, with new fabrics and upgraded bathrooms and my personal favourite, the Honeysuckle Cottage, had received a complete overhaul, leaving only the absence of a fire place to be regretted. However, those are otherwise found in every other cottage, all 20 of them with overall 44 rooms, and the VIP Suite too. Still, I would not have changed my choice as the Honeysuckle Cottage is the highest on the hill and the most remote one of them all, giving a feeling of total solitude, even when the club is fully booked.
At 62 I am still well able to walk, and climbing up the staircases did not bother me, but for guests with a lesser or greater disabilities, dispair not. The club has brought 4 electric trolleys which can be used to take guests to their cottages and spare them the climb and long walks, which will make all of the Aberdare Country Club accessible to all clients, even those with said problems.
The main building showed itself lovingly maintained, including the wooden wall panels in the dining room polished and the nooks and crannies everywhere are a hallmark of the way settler's residences were built 75 years ago. It is in fact 75 years now that the 'Steep' as it was known back then, was constructed and the club in its present form is part of The Ark Limited since 1970, when the first owners' kids sold their interest. The various lounges still sport huge oversized fire places and in the evening roaring woodfires enhance the atmosphere and make having a pre or post dinner drink all the more pleasant.
The food, as it was always the case, is simply a superb spread for lunch and while I enjoyed a Table d' Hote meal in the evenings, occupancy permitting that too is served as buffet. A choice of starters, main courses and desserts leaves no fancy lacking. The staff, many of them 'oldtimers' with a long service history, maintained their smile and made all the difference, remembering food and drink preferences during my stay and everyone passed in the extensive gardens and grounds offered a cheerful 'Jambo Sana', happily receiving a response of course.
And then there are the various activities at the club, some only revived since the new owners took control, which help to get rid of the surplus calories absorbed from the rich food on offer.
Golf, a 9 hole safari course, is free for guests, which means there is currently NO green fee to be paid. The stables have been overhauled too and horses are on the way to provide riding safaris across the 1.300 acres large estate, where a number of game species can be observed with ease. Swimming in the new enlarged and modernized pool is an age old option, and so is tennis to be played on one of the two courts. And then there is a brand new Spa with treatment rooms, sauna and steam, just waiting to be taken advantage of by visitors whose numbers surely must now rapidly rise once again, that the club has been given a complete overhaul.
The Aberdare Country Club presented itself from its Sunday best for sure and reminds me of the heydays in the 70's and 80's when on weekends there was not a room to be had, especially when golf tournaments were held. Thoroughly impressed once again and I will not wait another 15 years before returning once again.

Room Tip: All 19 cottages have connecting doors, a twin and double bedroom and a fire place. My personal prefe...

This is place excellent. Amazing grounds. Fabulous rooms. Attentive and helpful staff. Good food. Hot water bottles in beds when cold and fireplace lit by staff. Only downside is that the water pressure is quite low.

Rooms are large & very nice. Separate sitting area with fireplace, comfortable beds, large bathroom. I wasn't able to get hot water in shower & even if could have gotten hot water, only a trickle of water in the shower. I was eventually able to get hot water for the bathtub though. Loved the hot water bottle in the bed at night. Food was good. Grounds were lovely.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Aberdare Country Club, only a three-hour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was selected by an English couple who had decided to settle in the land of their choosing - Kenya. It all happened many years ago; their children grew up there, but then moved on to different places. After almost half a century, their home, "The Steep", was sold and re-named "The Aberdare Country Club". Even though the property was developed beyond the imaginings of the original owners, they would be pleased with how carefully it has been nurtured and the grandeur it has maintained. This is highlighted in Monty Brown's book, "Haven Under the Hill" which says: "Today, despite the fast-changing tempo of the outside world, the old home still retains that comfortable, solid feeling based on traditions from a time when life proceeded at a far more leisurely and gentle pace". The Club's 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary is teeming with eland, impalas, zebras, giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with a profusion of colour, and with peacocks living within the lush green lawns. Walking through this unspoiled terrain is paradise. Play a round of golf, watched by a family of warthog, or fish for trout, play tennis or just relax by the pool within the beautiful gardens. From here you can see the sunset with the stunning Aberdare Mountains as a backdrop. ... more   less
