We had our own vehicle so the first problem was getting access in and out by the locked gate. There was no one around when we arrived and the security man showed us to our room which was small, cramped and the standard I would expect from a travel lodge. We then waited an hour or so for our briefing when we could finally get a drink!!

The dining experience had all the ambience of a school canteen. We were always hunting down staff so that we could buy drinks at the bar. We stayed two nights and both mornings had an unrequested wake -up call at 6:30am, not that we could have slept through the noise of bus loads of tourists getting ready to depart.

The Aberdare National Park was amazing with fantastic scenery & wild life and we would definitely recommend the Park but not this hotel!

The elephants visiting the water hole at night was worth watching but we had much better experiences else where ( try Elephant Bed Rooms in Samburu).

We went here 25 years ago for our honeymoon and finally returned. To be honest I wan't that fussed about it being on the itinerary but it was and it was nice to go back, the rooms are now much more cosy and larger, the whole place is bigger than it was then, but it's lost some of it's quirkyness with that.

Food was good, but to be honest this isn't the best of places to see many animals as if like us it's a one night stop we arrived in the late afternoon, only had a hour or 2 before nightfall and then left after breakfast. Only saw a few elephants and waterbuck and not much else.

Was nice finding our name in the guest book again though from our honeymoon trip!

Dear Guest,

We are always delighted to host repeat clients and most importantly in your case having spent your honeymoon at the lodge 25 years ago. a year ago, the lodge was fully refurbished and now has an entire new look with all guest rooms en-suite and spacious.
Animal sightings can be tricky on some nights herds of elephants, buffalo and rhino are seen while other nights only a few visit the water hole.

We look forward to your next visit.

The hype and hubris exceeds the reality here. Yes the idea of a monster tree house above the waterhole is romantic and attractive but the reality was underwhelming. HM the Queen was here when sh earned that she had become monarch on he father's death.

Food was terrible and the limited bar was extortionate.

Rooms were minute (think submarine cabins) cold and full of flies and spiders.

The bar and viewing platforms were full of noisy Americans who successfully frightened the animals away and led to a distrinct froideaur in the "special relationship" across the pond.

I'll admit that on arrival, I was unimpressed: the fences seemed to ruin the view, Mt. Kenya was buried in clouds, a two-hour afternoon game drive was $85 per person (ha!), and the cake and scones served with the coffee were not stellar.

But at nightfall, my opinions began to shift. There is a certain magic to watching the elephants, buffalo, and even rhinos facing off and protecting their young in the floodlights. It really is unlike anything I've seen before. And like my roommate commented--how often do you go to sleep to the sound of elephants? Plus, the coffee itself was delicious...

The next day, my group of friends were able to go on a day-long safari to Karuru Falls (the tallest waterfall in E. Africa, and the second tallest in the continent after Vic Falls) for 5000/= each (resident rate). Still not cheap, but reasonable given who usually stays at this place. Our guide was incredibly friendly and very knowledgable about the park. We visited two other spectacular falls after Karuru, drove through the three main ecosystems in Aberdares NP, and had time for game viewing as well.

The off-season, half-board, resident rate enabled us to stay for two nights, and that's really what made it worth while. The one-nighters are piled on an 8am bus out of the park, which is just silly. What happened to 10am checkout? If possible, get your own car/driver into the park. Then you can do your own game drives with the KWS guides from the nearby park gate (cheap, friendly, and in my experience quite good), and you can stay in the park as long as you want the second day. You can even skip the guide--signs abound in this area of the park, and the treetops staff can help direct you.

Room Tip: For some reason two of us had a room twice as big as the others--maybe they gave us a triple for the price of a double. If you're there in the low season, you may be able to negotiate for a bigger room.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to share your experience of Treetops on Trip advisor.
The lodge is currently engaged in a re afforestation program and has fenced some parts near the lodge to allow trees to grow and protect them from being destroyed by wild animals.
With the newly created car park near the lodge we encourage self drive though check in is still at Outspan. Guest on self drive spend more time at the lodge and can leave at will as long as they adhere to the Park closure times.
We look forward to hosting you in the near future.

Our stay inTreetops was the worst stay of any of the places we stayed on any of our trips allover Africa. The staff was unfriendly up to rude and totally unflexible. The rooms are noisy and food is mediocre. The waterhole is nice but with the fence it is clearly artificial, there is no attempt made to try to make it look natural . The Aberdares are beautiful and worthwhile a visit but there must be better accommodation in the region than this. To be avoided!
