This is the place to go to if you are thinking about Wadi Rum. The camp has just the right size, a great location and the perfect ambience for an unforgettable night in desert.
I have lived in Jordan for a year now and in that time I have been in Wadi Rum over and over again. And it is fair to say: Khaled's Camp is the greatest place I could imagine there.

Wadi Rum is a magic place with a very special feeling. Seeing the huge rocks lining up in the middle of a flat sand desert is already fascinating. Hiking through canyons or up to stone bridges, riding a camel or getting a grasp of the sheer size of the desert exploring it by jeep is probably one of my most memorable experiences so far. Really breathtaking however is the night: A seemingly infinite amount of stars glimmering above you, making you feel part of the universe. In the completest silence you have ever experienced, lying in the sand looking at the stars you can almost feel the earth rotating below you.

Khaled's Camp is just the perfect match for this athmosphere. The last thing you want in Wadi Rum is the kitsch and flashiness that you find in a lot of the other camps. The simplicity of the camp makes it seem just part of this place.

What the camp lacks in fancy equipment, the hosts make more than up for by there incredible hospitality. Always with a joke on their lips, Khaled, Omar and Ali fullfil each of your wishes before you can even ask for it. The food is delicious - and often enough you can watch them cook it.

Khaled, the owner of the camp, is one of the very few bedouin alive today, who actually still have been born and raised in the desert. Almsot all his life he has spent living in a tent, exploring the desert with his feet. A selfmade man who taught himself English with the tourists and can tell you good night in almost every language of the world, he is the perfect guide who can fill you in not only on the sights of Wadi Rum, but also the traditions, habits and history of the place.

Wadi Rum is magical. So is this camp.

I spent three nights in Khaled’s camp recently and couldn’t have come away with a better experience. His camp occupies a stunning location south of Rum Village. It backs onto a small rock formation that we climbed to watch the sun set over the rich red mountains in Wadi Rum. Khaled and his team exude hospitality, a defining feature of my experience with the Bedouins.

Arriving at Khaled’s camp we were taken to our tent then promptly greeted with a cup of tea. The camp is dotted with quaint wrought iron chairs that remind me almost of a French café. They had the effect of creating a great space to socialize with the other guests who were spending the night, as well as a lovely spot for breakfast the following morning. Overall the camp was really clean, which is always a pleasant surprise when staying in accommodation outside of an urban center.

Our dinner was fresh and flavourful and Khaled even played a traditional instrument called a “rababa” for us. Khaled’s camp combined what you hope for in terms of comfort in the desert, but truly excelled in adding that local dimension that so many travelers miss out on. Khaled is a talented host and his team are professionals in this unique place. I would gladly recommend Khaled’s camp to anyone making their way out to Wadi Rum. I want to make it back to this magical place soon!

I have stayed at Khaled's camp four times over the last few years, and have recommended it to countless friends who have all fallen in love with the place as much as I have. The scenery in Wadi Rum is truly spectacular, and I never tire of the magical sunsets and sunrises there. But what makes this place truly special is seeing the beautiful desert through the eyes of people who have grown up there, who are part of the place (and the place part of them). Khaled Sabbagh Atieg and his family are the most wonderful hosts. Their camp is in a beautiful spot near where the red sand and the white sand meet, and with beautiful landscapes in every direction. Khaled will arrange everything with you in advance by email/phone, catering your stay according to how much time you have available and what activities you prefer. Prices are very reasonable. He will meet you at the Wadi Rum resthouse (just inside the Rum national park) and drive you from there in to the desert. You can stay either in tents, which are very comfortable (and include beds and bedding) or out in the open if you prefer to sleep under the stars. The camp has toilets, but you never feel that you are in a touristy place - I think because the camp is a small family set up (unlike some of the bigger places which cater for tours). The atmosphere of the place is so friendly, with Khaled and his (many!) brothers all making sure that guests are comfortable, but without fussing. This gives you time to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the desert, as well as learn about bedouin traditions. The food (tea at sunset, a hearty dinner, and traditional breakfast) is excellent. And you can choose from a variety of activities during the daytime which Khaled can arrange (camel trekking, hiking, jeep tour etc) to explore Wadi Rum. I can recommend all of them. But make sure you stay overnight; there is nothing that compares to the beauty and serenity of the desert in the moonlight with the stars shining brightly... Yalla, don't hesitate - go and see for yourself!

Room Tip: Ask to sleep outside under the stars!

Hospitality has a name... Khaled Sabbah Atieg is the nicest guide you can imagine. He would do everything to please you.The desert is his second home and you are more than welcome to explore this together with him. An excellent cook and even a better photographer. This is heaven on earth!
