“professional and hospitable from start to finish”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014

Contacted Mehedi for a two day two night stay in Wadi Rum which we wanted to customize to include a mix of the standard sights and as much hiking/non-technical climbing (rakabat canyon, um ad dani, jebel haash) as we could fit. he was very accomodating in helping us come up with an itinerary that fit our needs and communication was always prompt, professional and very precise.

we had to make last minute changes when we arrived due to several days of rain and cold temperatures and it was no problem to just adapt as we saw fit with the help of our guide Saleh. Saleh immediately made us feel like we fit right in as we met some of his family and took the time to see more of what the bedouin life was like as we had to spend a good amount of time inside due to the rain, cold and even snow (?). but we never felt like we missed out on anything as pretty soon the whole trip was like spending time joking around with a new friend. didn't get a chance to sleep outside but spent two great nights in the main camp, one chatting with fellow visitors over great food and tea, and the second with the whole camp to ourselves, getting to know more about our guide and Mehedi. once the weather improved a bit, we got outside and got to see some great sights that were fun mini-adventures to get to.

amazing experience from start to finish. would not hesitate to recommend them to others. definitely could find enough to do to keep even the most active travelers busy.

I hate writing reviews, i never do, however this is the first organisation that was worth making the effort for..... so bear with me, but keep reading......

No holiday in Jordan is complete without a trip to Wadi Rum, and once you arrive there is no better host than Mehedi, his experienced guides, unforgettible trips and finally a relaxing & well prepared camp.

Prior to arriving in Jordan, we spent many many hours researching the various camps & organisers, and it came quickly apparent that Bedouin Directions was the one for us (smaller, more private, less commercial) in comparision to the larger camps.... from start to finish it was perfect.

A brief non-personal description would be:

From initial email enquiry to conformation, Mehedi communicated quickly & precisely.
Upon arrival, we were met at the prearranged location on time and as described.
Our 3 day plan, was as described (an understatement really, as it far exceeded anything we could imagine)
Food, accommodation, cleanliness, guides..... perfect.

We were lucky enough to have the camp to ourselves for the first two nights, we spent the time learning the Bedouin ways with the guides whilst eating our well prepared meal and enjoying the amazing silence of the desert. Our last night proved a night to remember with a surprise celebration for my birthday complete with singing and a cake.... the guys really did make the experience something that will never be forgotten. Exceptional trips during the day, camel trekking, Burdah Arch, White Desert, visiting our guides various family members and sharing experiences.

To sum this up, Mehedi and friends/family run a truly personalised camp and pull out all the stops to cater for individual needs, leaving you with an experience that will stay with you a lifetime.

The staff makes you feel very welcome. The camp is hidden behind a small canyon which makes it even more mysterious. The owner arranged for us a tailormade camel tour of 4 days into the white dessert where we slept outside under the stars. We had a group of 6 and travelled lot's of the track in silence since our focus was on personal development and inner mindfulness.

We spent 2 nights with Mehedi's camp and we had a very good experience. Prior to the trip, we had researched Wadi Rum a lot and there are a large number of tour operators that all offer similar services in terms of tour itinerary and camp facilities. We ultimately chose Mehedi's company, based on his email communication being very dedicated and personalised compared to other companies. His prices are slightly more than some operators that you can find on Google, about 10 JD per person more per day, but once you are in Wadi Rum, it's immediately apparent that you are paying a bit more for a quality experience.
Also, his revenue is split amongst his family members who all help to run the camp and tours, in this unique community and part of the world.
Some reasons we found his company better than others, from our prior research and on-the-ground-experience:

- Tours are private, Mehedi has several jeeps and every travel group has their own jeep. Mehedi offers shared jeeps for cheaper prices. At least the choice is available, whereas with other operators, the only choice is shared jeep, which can result in sharing with immature, swearing 20 year old travellers as we witnessed from another group.

- A few tour itineraries I found online try to pack in more spots during the 1 day jeep tour, which necessitates more dashing about and less time at each spot. Mehedi's tours include fewer spots and a more leisurely pace. If you've been to Petra already and/or other deserts before, the differences between the different "sites" at Wadi Rum aren't that different and there's no point rushing around on a jeep.

- Email communication with Mehedi was on another level, compared to other operators. He replies within a day and answers every question, whereas some other operators give standard answers/misses questions and slow in replying. Also both his email and spoken English (when we met him) were very fluent, compared to other operators. Understandable that operator is not English fluent, but the practicality is useful.

- Mehedi is there every evening to check on us, which was useful when we had to make a plan change during the trip. I believe the owners of some other camps do that too.

- Speaking with expats who have stayed at different camps there, they say Mehedi's camp has the best food. Also, his is the only tour that serves hot lunches, cooked in a pot over a fire that I have come across.

- The camp is in a little mountain cul-de-sac, sheltered from the wind and the noise of other camps. Many other camps are in the open, at the foot of a hill, and some of them are in close proximity, which affects the middle-of-nowhere-desert-feeling that you are looking for.

- His camp is quite small, with beds for up to 20 people. There are some camps with space for up to 60, which isn't my preference.

- His camp has a generator for light bulbs and charging sockets, which is turned off at about 9pm.

- There is a shower and the water is solar heated, so it's a bit warm at dusk, but otherwise it's not actively heated.

- Overall feeling from the email communication to the end of trip was that both Mehedi and his various staff care about providing a good service and experience and spend the extra effort into doing that.

Final tips about Wadi Rum in general -

We did 1 day jeep tour and 1 day camel tour and we enjoyed the camel tour much more, because the camel touring areas are much quieter. We went in a big loop of 9 hours of camel riding and after 20 minutes of getting used to the camel and settling in, it's very comfortable all the way. Camel riding is whisper quiet and we spent the day chatting to our Bedouin guide, who took us to one of his family tents, and enjoying the desert ourselves.

The standard jeep tour goes to all the "main sights" and other than the rock arches, I don't think they're that special. You end up exploring sites with 20 other tourists and crisscrossing the desert with other jeeps. You don't get the vast emptiness feeling of Wadi Rum by doing the jeep tour. It becomes quite similar to other parts of the world.

For an authentic and more unique experience that you won't get in many places, do the 1 day camel tour, which takes you away from the touristy area.

A holiday to Jordan is incomplete without a visit to Wadi Rum. We are now home for more than a month and still think back of that experience ! This was all made possible with the wonderful service of Mehedi and his team, or should i say family ? And we also became members. I guess it is in their genes to offer that type of hospitality. A type of hospitality you will often think back when you have to go back into this "cold" world.
What you need during a holiday is a trip you can plan without stress, experience without stress and can look back on without stress. Thanks to bedouin directions we have made that type of trip. Shukran !

I was there with my kids (12, 10 & 5). They loved it.
It had been a pleasure to do communicate with Mehedi – all along. Got prompt, comprehensive and friendly replies to all my queries.
As far as price is concerned, I checked with several other operators, Mehedi was amongst the most reasonable ones. Hence, value for money.
Camp is well-maintained, food well-prepared, and committed staff. Landscape truly enjoyable. U are served without being intrusive.

However, a word of caution. If you arrange transport to/from the camp through Mehedi. Pay/re-confirm the fare with the driver in front of Mehedi/ your guide while arriving/leaving. Otherwise, there is a risk that the driver would try to renegotiate the fare with you with different tricks.

We've spent one night in their camp. Dinner was great, breakfast standard. We've play some games with guys who worked there and we've talked about the desert. Night was cold and wet (it was heavy rain that day) but they've got the best blankets in the world and it's warm enough.
