This trip exceeded all my expectations. It was so easy to organise - we discussed it all by e-mail with Obeid who arranged for his son Nial to meet us at the Wadi Rum visitors centre. He drove us to the camp - traditional Bedouin black and white tents around a campfire up on a small promontory. We sat in the shade, drinking tea and chatting with Nial and his brother Salem and were made to feel at home. After a relaxing hour we set off on a 4 hour jeep tour of the desert. The colour of the sand and the rocks was amazing and the views stunning. We stopped to see some ancient inscriptions and met their cousins who were equally welcoming and made tea with cinnamon and thyme. It is hard to describe how this was a fun thing to do but sitting on the back of a pick up, driving over sand dunes in the open desert is a great experience. We returned back to camp in time to see the sun set over the desert. We could see other groups watching from the wadi floor but we had a great vantage point all to ourselves. Salem cooked us dinner - chicken with tomatoes and potatoes and served this with salad and flatbread. It was delicious. We then had tea sitting outside by the campfire, watching the amazing night sky and listening to Salem sing traditional songs and play his drum. He happily answered questions about his life which he must be asked so often ( and showed us how he texted in Arabic) We decided to sleep outside and he made our beds in the shade of a tent so the sun wouldn't shine in our faces in the morning. Haroosh the cat must have been close by as his reassuring purr lulled us to sleep. The next morning we had a shower in the spotless bathroom and then breakfast - flatbread with halva, eggs, salt cheese and hummus and more tea of course. We then sadly had to return to our car, and reality, having had an amazing adventure with 2 very kind hosts who really made sure we had a great time. And now we want to go back ...
