Obeid's Bedouin Life Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 18, 2013

This trip exceeded all my expectations. It was so easy to organise - we discussed it all by e-mail with Obeid who arranged for his son Nial to meet us at the Wadi Rum visitors centre. He drove us to the camp - traditional Bedouin black and white tents around a campfire up on a small promontory. We sat in the shade, drinking tea and chatting with Nial and his brother Salem and were made to feel at home. After a relaxing hour we set off on a 4 hour jeep tour of the desert. The colour of the sand and the rocks was amazing and the views stunning. We stopped to see some ancient inscriptions and met their cousins who were equally welcoming and made tea with cinnamon and thyme. It is hard to describe how this was a fun thing to do but sitting on the back of a pick up, driving over sand dunes in the open desert is a great experience. We returned back to camp in time to see the sun set over the desert. We could see other groups watching from the wadi floor but we had a great vantage point all to ourselves. Salem cooked us dinner - chicken with tomatoes and potatoes and served this with salad and flatbread. It was delicious. We then had tea sitting outside by the campfire, watching the amazing night sky and listening to Salem sing traditional songs and play his drum. He happily answered questions about his life which he must be asked so often ( and showed us how he texted in Arabic) We decided to sleep outside and he made our beds in the shade of a tent so the sun wouldn't shine in our faces in the morning. Haroosh the cat must have been close by as his reassuring purr lulled us to sleep. The next morning we had a shower in the spotless bathroom and then breakfast - flatbread with halva, eggs, salt cheese and hummus and more tea of course. We then sadly had to return to our car, and reality, having had an amazing adventure with 2 very kind hosts who really made sure we had a great time. And now we want to go back ...

Room Tip: Sleeping outside was a great decision but we went in July when it was hot.

No visitor to Jordan should miss out on visiting the deserts of Wadi Rum and no visitor to Wadi Rum could find a better place to stay there than Obeid's Bedouin Life Camp. The camp gets everything right - it's tucked away in a magical spot inside the Wadi Rum protected area with beautiful views across the desert and mountains. The style and feel is traditional Bedouin but the camp is also managed with respect for modern environmental practices. The best thing of all is Obeid and his family, you could not not find more generous and hospitable hosts. Obeid himself has a deep knowledge of Bedouin culture and traditions, and provides the most fascinating tours of Wadi Rum, with an expertise that will really enhance your trip. My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic stay here and throughout Obeid treated us more like returning friends. This is the real Bedouin experience in Wadi Rum, and not to be missed.

Chose this camp on the basis of the reviews on here, and had no problems what so ever.

We were a little late to the arranged meeting at the visitors centre, but were forgiven quickly and were on our way out into the desert. We were taken out that afternoon on a 4 hour trip, which actually ended up being closer to five hours thanks to the no rush approach of our guides.

Obeid's organization was faultless. Thanks to the details we had exchanged, he spotted us on the road (bare in mind we had never met!) and flagged us down, directing us to where his son would meet us. He then rang his son and told him to wait a little longer as we would be there shortly (as I said, we were late!).

The family were very welcoming and I could not have asked for more in the way of service. A minor criticism is perhaps that conversation wasn't very forthcoming from our guide once we returned to the camp, but my friend and I were quite happy with that as it allowed us more time to simply watch the stars.

Haven't tried any of the other camps, but had no problem with this one!

Friendly, breathtaking, easy going desert camp. Obeid and family spare no effort to make you feel at home, and what a home under the stars! I would have just like a little more in-depth info pn fauna and flora of the desert. But otherwise it was perfect! Thanks Obeid for the long hard drive to the north too!

Room Tip: It s a bedoin camp, so you sleep either under the stars or in a very basic tent.

I Highly recommend Obeid´s Bedouin Life Camp, I was there twice with my friends, and every time it has been unforgettable experience! Obeid and his sons took good care of us by all means, arranged tours for us in the desert , took us to magical places where no other can find. Obeid took us to Petra a whole day trip with his comfortable new 4-wheel drive and stayed with us the whole day. They cooked food for us at the Camp it was delecious. Be sure to make time in your Jordan travels to stay explore Wadi Rum and when you do stay with Obeid's family at Obeid's Bedouin Life Camp.

Our family (my husband and myself and our three adult children) spent an afternoon, overnight and morning with Obeid's family in Wadi Rum in mid-June 2013.

We were picked up at a rest stop on the main road and began our journey into the desert and beautiful rock formations that comprise the landscape of Wadi Rum. We arrived in the late afternoon after the heat of the day. The air was clear and the rock formations were golden as we rode in the 4x4 through the desert to Obeid's camp.

The camp is small and far from the main road (we passed several large encampments on our way). It is run by Obeid and his sons who are all wonderful hosts. The tents are large and contain a bed on the floor and a gas lamp for heat and light. The delicious dinner was prepared by Obeid's sons - cooked in large pots buried in the sand. Afterward's they served us tea while we sat around a fire and watched the stars.

My husband and I slept very comfortably in the tent. Our children slept outdoors under the stars. Obeid's sons brought our childrens' mattresses and bedding out for them near the campfire. They fell asleep under the stars. I am sorry we didn't join them.

In the morning, we took a one hour camel ride out from the camp. Its a great experience - the camels' gait is stately and they often reach to snack on the sparse vegetation. Its give you a perfect contemplative exploration of the Wadi Rum desert landscape. We returned to camp for a breakfast of hummus, labne, olives and pita along with tea.

Later in the morning we took the faster version of touring Wadi Rum - a two hour 4x4 jeep tour (note - you sit on benches in the open back of the jeep). We saw more amazing rock formations.

Back in camp once again, we were offered more tea and set off for Petra. Obeid's son drove us to the gas station meeting place on the main road and a driver Obeid had arranged drove us to Petra. (Obeid had also arranged for us to be picked up by a driver in Eilat.)

In sum, our visit to Wadi Rum was wonderful and Obeid's family were perfect hosts.
