What a lovely place! Perfect to get some rest before, in between or after traveling Indonesia. Awesome view on the lake, good swimming, very quiet, acoustic bataksongs performed by mister Brown and nice chatting with Sam and Sunshine Jelita. The two days I spent in this place were definitely too short. Looking forward to go back.

We just had the best time at Lake Toba and at Mas Cottages. When we got to Parapat we were actually planning to stay at another Guesthouse directly in Tuk Tuk, but then started talking to Brown (he works for Mas) and he convinced us to come to Mas with him. Im usually not a huge fan of being talked into staying some place and rather rely on what the travel guides say. However, we were so gald that Brown talked us into it this time. We had a beautiful room in one of the regular houses with a lovely little terrace only like two metres away from shore with great swimming. The room and bathroom are simple but quite nice and absolutely spotless.
From the restaurant you had a great view over the lake, the food was great, there was a hammock to chill out in and free wifi. In the evenings the guys were strumming away on their guitar and sang traditional batak songs. With the sun setting in the background it was simply perfect and soooo cosy!
But apart from all those things what made our stay even more perfect were the people of Mas Cottages!! The owner and his wife took such incredibly good care of us and just made us feel at home instantly. They gave us tips what is worth to see on the island and helped us with everything else we needed or wanted to know.
So even though it is a little bit outside of Tuk Tuk, I can only recommend for everybody to stay at Mas Cottages in Ambarita while visiting Lake Toba. It's an easy 15 min walk into tuk tuk if you feel like a drink.
So if you're in Parapat waiting for the ferry look out for Brown (the super nice guy with the crazy curly hair) or one of the two other super nice dudes from Mas and let them take u there. It was one of the best decision we took during our tour around Indonesia!

Room Tip: A room with hot shower is worth the little bit extra, as it can get a little chilly at night.

Warning: this place is really difficult to leave! I only intended to stay at Mas Cottages for a week but as one day faded into another, it was almost a month before I left!!.. Would I stay again? HELL YEAH!

Mas Cottages boasts some of the most spectacular views on the island, especially just outside of the newly renovated dining area. Speaking of food, the dining here is excellent too, with both local and international food available (tip: excellent curry here!)

The batak houses for rent are spacious and clean More importantly, they're right NEXT to the water which is helpful if you've indulged in too much of the local beer (easily done): you can literally be in the water from your room in less than five seconds! Very convenient..

The real appeal of this place, however, are the staff. I found them to be helpful, honest and welcoming from the day I arrived until the day I left. They're a wealth of knowledge too, when it comes to helping navigate all the various 'touristy' things to do when you're here.

This place will be sorely missed :(
Looking forward to coming back next year :)

We arrived late around midnight and the staff was still friendly enough to bring us to our room and let us rest and washed up early without registering or paying for the room.
They are pretty friendly, informative and honest :)
We rented a scooter and the staff even taught us how to ride it :) So there we went biking around the town, taking pictures and all.
The room itself is basic, but the view is stunning. We woke up to the lake every morning and slept with our balcony door opened wide listening to the soothing splashing sound of the lake.
