“Amazing value for the money, great location and view over the lake, amazing food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012 via mobile

We didn't book any place to stay and in advance so when we got to Samosir island, we decided to look around different guesthouses and after looking for about ten rooms found this real gem! First night we stayed in Batak house that had bathroom outside and indonesian style toilet and hot water for the price 65 000 idr. House was very nice and cozy with own terrace. After one night we changed to other Batak house which had bathroom inside and western toilet and amazing location by the lake. Price was 85000 idr. Very friendly owners and staff and food was delicious! And rooms were kept very clean. This is the best place to stay in Samosir, highly recommend it!

Romlan guest house is a great place to stay. The view of from the room is great. Early bird always get the best room with best view of the lake. When you get up in the morning, you can see the calm water and you may just wanted to jump in the water. And even you dont want to swim, you may just take the pictures of the scenery.
The rate of the room is 850000 rupiah per night. The room there is really cozy and you can just sit down without doing anything. The food and the drinks of the guest house is great... And everyday , we tried different kind of food... You will be surprising that this cozy guest house served food very well. And the price is really reasonable. If you have the chance, try as many food as you can.
Beside that, if you need any transportation around the island, then you dont have to look everywhere, just go for the owner. He is a very good driver and a good tour guide as well with reasonable price... Driving in lake toba is not that easy.
If have the chance to go to lake toba, Romlan guest house is my first priority.
Special thanks to the owner Marion Knoop and Desker Manurung for such a good arrangement. We miss both of you so much.

Romlan has it all for a relaxing stay on Tuk Tuk. Good rooms, hot water, free wifi, friendly atmosphere, great food, beautiful views and cheap. We booked for 2 nights (80.000 per night) and ended up staying for 3 weeks (the price dropped to 60.000). Rooms are basic but everything you need, comfy bed, wardrobe, hangers, bedside light, hot water, clean bedding and towels and beautiful views out on to the lake. All the rooms have either their own balcony or veranda with chairs and small table. The wifi can be a bit tricky in the room but the signal is good out on the veranda. There’s a computer you can use there as well. You can hire motor bikes here and they have a laundry service. There’s a small restaurant with a pretty varied menu including western and some classic German dishes. The girls here are great cooks, it may seem like the food takes forever to come but that’s only because everything is cooked fresh from scratch but be patient its worth it. We used to take our meals to our room and eat on our veranda overlooking the lake watching the boats go by. Staff are lovely, always smiling and Marion the German owner was very helpful in letting us store luggage there, while we spent a few days in Bukit Lawang. We looked around at other accommodation on Tuk Tuk but Romlans couldn’t be beaten on quality and cost. If our visa hadn’t run out we’d still be there now!

Romlan is for sure 1 of the better budget GH's on tuktuk (samosir island).
When you take the ferry from parapat to tuktuk (7000 idr) the captain will drop you at Romlan if you ask him. Every room (i think 2 are not !) facing the lake. Beautiful views from almost every room. PLaces to relax on the lakeside, a good restaurant, WiFi in all places of the gh, and so on. Rates for a double room is 85.000 idr. Budget room (not facing the lake) 60.000 idr. Extra bed in the room (or mattress) 25.000. The owners and staff are all helpfull and friendly. The double room (85.000) comes with a comfy bed, 2 chairs, 1 table, att bathroom with western style toilet, shower (hot water 24/7) and a sink. No a/c and no fan in the room but you dont need it on samosir because its always 7 to 10 degrees (celcius) colder then the rest of Sumatra (and so is the water temp).
The rooms are spotless and so was the bathroom. Little porch with every room with two comfy chairs and a table facing the lake.
The WiFi is not that strong. Most times it had even problems with google :). But some times it worked just enough for your mail and even skype. Dont try to upload anything.
Towels and toiletpaper are provided. Food in the restaurant is ok. Little more expansive then other places on Sumatra but so is everything on tuktuk. Sitting area in the restaurant for watching TV or a movie. They have a few 100 movies waiting for you. Even some books if you dont have any. You can hire (push)bikes (25,000) or motorbikes (80.000 incl fuel) at the gh.
You can take drinks out of the fridge and write it down in your own (roomnumber) book and pay when you leave. They only want idr so take enough with you. In the two nearest towns (left and right from tuktuk) you will find atm's.
The budget rooms (60.000) dont have a western styke toilet)
Are there no negative point ...... yes there are.
The place is quiet .... yes and no. There is nothing on tuktuk or samosir. It is rather dead so dont expect to find any partyplace on the island. But thats we we went there. Away from the street close to the lake. The boats who come by start at 07:00 am. Blow there horns to get attention from anyone who need a ride. But thats also the end of your good night sleep.
The rooms are well ventilated. But that means no glass ( there are mozzy nets for the vents) so if someone outside is on his porch talking(say 10 meter away) it feels like he is beside your bed.
Then there are a lot of cats and some dogs. The dogs are quiet at night but the cats are not. All night (or at least till 3:00 am) they wake me up at least 3 or 4 times. Every night.
We stayed there for 9 days. All those days behind the questhouse someone was working from 08:00 am till ??? breaking stones with a hamer. Not nice if you want some rest.
Ants and other creeping stuff in the room and bathroom but we are not invaded by them, so that was no problem for us.

So in the end it is an absolute gem and i think i visit Romlan again next time but al those nights i did not had one good night sleep and thats is not good i think.
If you forget that, the place is just fine and cheap. Real good for the money.

We stayed at Romlan for 3 days in July. The room cost us 100000 rph per night which was a great value for all that you get. A large room, wifi, hot shower, and a nice balcony overlooking Lake Toba. The room was very clean, but as others have mentioned, there were some ants. We sprayed the opening under the door where they were coming in with bug spray, and they never returned. The staff were very nice and the food was fairly good, not amazing, but good. My husband had their Lake Toba Tilapia one night and he loved it though. The only downside to Romlan was the extremely noisy neighbours who were Indonesian, and on a weekend vacation. They were singing until 2am for 2 of the nights we were there. I know it is not Romlan's fault, but if I had known that there was a hotel next door like that, I would have booked elsewhere. The day they left, (Sunday), it was the most peaceful and quiet place. We did not swim in Lake Toba as it was a rainy weekend, but it looked clean to us.
We would definitely recommend Romlan during the week, but would not for a weekend stay.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have a great balcony with nice views.

I planned to stay for about 2-3 nights at Lake Toba, but what a beautiful place it is. One of the best places I have seen in my 10 month travel trough Asia, and I ended up staying here for 9 nights. Romlan guesthouse is not a 5 star place but what you get for only 80.000 IDR is amazing. A private room, with hot water, very fast wifi and a superb view of Lake Toba.

The girls working here are friendly enough, food is cheap and tasty and the place is an excellent starting point for motorbiking trips on the island itself. If you want to have very good views, go to the left for about 4 km when you get to Tomok, and then take the road going up. After about 15 minutes of driving you will get amazing viewpoints, more so if you keep on driving. Absolutely stunning views.

I recommended this place to friends, for the price, location and beautiful views. Some things to remember; the walls are very thin, if you have someone sleeping next door, you will hear them very good, bathroom was a bit ant infested, but they stuck to their route, so no problems there. Also, the neighbours can be a bit noisy, nothing Romlan can do about that though. Usually happens only in the weekend, then island is not on the tourist map, so it is extremely quiet. Another reason to go.

I stayed in Romlan for 2 weeks last year and found it to be good quality accomodation with amazing views of the beautiful lake.

The rooms are simple: bed, small wardrobe, hot (ish) shower and toilet. My room had a balcony which had a table and chairs - from here you have stunning views of lake toba. It is so peaceful and relaxing.

There is a diving board and access to the lake if you want to swim.

Free wifi connection if you ask at reception for the password.

Good location - close to shops and restaurants (also ferry). There is a really good restaurant nearby called Rumba that sells western and Indonesian food. A good place to go in the evenings as there is often entertainment (local people singing!) and it stays open late.

Room Tip: Try to stay on top floor with balcony - good views and I had no mozzie bites :)
