There are no place which are not beautiful in Bali. And Mt. Batur is one of it! Took my second trip here after 15 years ago and still, i was mesmerized by the view. If you take your trip from Singaraja (just like what i did yesterday) you'll find a bridge that has the best view to see both Mt Batur and Batur Lake with perfect angle. The road is quite big so you can park you car or motorbike there. Other than this, you can also enjoy the scene from the restaurants along the way to Lake Batur.

This is a very popular activity in Bali and we saw people coming from all over Bali - which means its good. However, it helps to be better prepared for this trip.
1). Book the tour with a proper tour operator. Make sure you check prices at multiple places as it can very up to 100%.
2) Carry proper clothes and gear as its quite cold and windy while climbing up and until sunrise. If you forget, you can hire a jacket in the foothill of the mountain before the start of the hike - but they will charge you 50,000 IDR for that.
3) Climb slowly and steady. It's quite tough and last 30 mins demand every bit of energy. Needless to say - have proper shoes as its quite slippery due to stones at a lot of places.

The climb is worth when you see the sunrise. It's beautiful. View of lake Batur is stunning. Our experience was compromised a bit because our tour guide couldn't understand much English. Also, tour operator - Bali Cultural Tour - wasn't good.

Once you reach there it seems you are on a different part of the earth. The view is spectacular with awesome weather. The journey to the place is also good with beautiful rice paddy fields and organic farms. Do try the fruits and strawberry available.

Left ayu hotel 0430. It was raining and we were thinking about canceling. The guide gave us a torch to share and he had a couple of umbrellas. We didn't have jackets just some layers and a jumper thinking it would be freezing at the top. Wrong! A short way into the walk I had stripped down to a singlet and was sweating. Very humid in the jungle part at the start and only added a tshirt at the top after cooling down. Clouds came and went but we had a spectacular sunrise looking toward mt rinjani on Lombok and mt agung. The walk around the crater was well worth the extra effort and the narrow ridge made me stop to look around because one wrong step and you could find yourself tumbling down the mountain. The steam coming out of the ground that cooked our eggs was a nice warm treat to stand in and enjoy and the earth was warm underfoot in places. I read a lot of reviews before going and depending on where your from and what your into don't get too fussed about preparing for extreme mountain climbing. I completed the whole trek barefoot with only a few places that were a bit rocky and uncomfortable. This was a better option for me than thongs ( flip flops, jandals, pluggas) wich are the only footwear I'm travelling with. We returned to our hotel at 09:30 very satisfied with the walk. And although we don't drink fizzy drinks we negotiated a price with the guides 13 year old sun for two cokes that he carried the whole way just to sell us and just gave him the money for his effort. He can sell them to the next punters. I'd highly reccomend this hike to those who like photography hiking nice views and some learning about volcanoes. 10 out of 10!!!

The hike up Mt. Batur was exhausting especially for someone who has bad cardio, like me. Lol. But I wouldn't say it was a hard hike. Just make sure you to arrive at the top in time for the breathtaking view of the sunrise. And I mean at the VERY top 1700m at the lip of the crater, not the 1500m checkpoint where most people stop at because it can be very crowded down there and plus, you've come all the way up here so you definitely have to make it to the top. =) Just a mere 200m climb more through the ashes and soft volcano sand. ;)
I would definitely come here again.

Most people would take the tour package. But if you're feeling adventurous, you can go on your own.
