Hired a car for the day specifically to go here. Car hire cost US$28 for the day plus petrol. If your not fussed on driving yourself get a car plus driver for the day at a cost of around US$40 Including petrol and waiting around for you.

The roads in Bali are not fantastic, very busy, mopeds coming at you at evey angle.

From the coastal town of Sanur up to Kintamani volcano took about 2 hours as traffic is slow. The traffic eases after Ubud. We went up early morning to avoid the coach trips and the clouds which cover the top of the volcano.
On the way up to the Volcano there are coffee vendors offering free tasting of Kopi Luwak coffee, which is considered to be the most expensive in the world. The coffee beans are eaten by civet cats and then ex created and collected. Not too sure if I fancy tasting second hand coffee!

Plenty of places en route to take photos, the view from the top offers fantastic views over the lake, the caldera and neighbouring volcano. There is a small information centre at the top with the history of all the eruptions, the last being in 2000.

Lots of stalls selling gifts, coffee shops and toilets.

Well worth a visit

Drive up to kintamani one morning. We were advised to leave around 9 am, earlier the sun is not up so viewing the mountain is not great and later becomes too hot. It turned out to be a pleasant morning so the drive was good. A small ticket price per person has to be paid to go up ahead on the road. The car parks on the main road from where one can see the volcano and a lake. A few photograph and that's it.
We did not drive down to the lake but it is possible if one wants to.
No good place around to have a coffee. And hordes of vendors trying to sell cheap Ts.
Definitely not a high point of our trip.

You have to go to kintamani as your tour destination when you come to Bali. Very nice view, volcano mountain, lake, green landscape, and enjoy the fresh air there...
But too many pushy hawkers, every time you will have someone approaching you & trying to sell something. They have to be arranged by the government...

For full disclosure I didn't get the opportunity to climb Mt. Batur, I simply viewed it from an observation deck during lunch. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the restaurant where my group ate, but it's apparently very popular with the tourists. The food is served buffet style and there is quite a bit of variety. It was raining as we arrived for lunch and the mountain peak was obscured with lots of clouds. The clouds started to lift but quickly descended again. You definitely want to take as many photos as possible when the opportunity presents itself. The mountain itself was so beautiful to simply look at I can't imagine how cool it would have been to experience a hike.
