DIC Star Hotel
Ranked #45 of 84 Hotels in Vung Tau
Reviewed May 4, 2008

Stayed for one night at the hotel in early May 2008.

The hotel in my view does not qualify in any way for a four-star rating. The location could have provided for a nice experience, being close to the beach, however the hotel seems to be very run-down and not up to any standards required even for Vietnamese hotels with this rating. The staff was not service minded in any way, and did not seem to have much knowledge of pre-bookings. The hallway outside the room had stone floors, which meant that it was quite loud from the large number of people moving along the hall. There was a strange smell both in the hallway and in the room, which I believe to be insect poison, and for good reason. The balcony had a nice view over the beach, but since it was littered with cochroaches, you didn't feel like staying there much. This seemed to be a problem for the entire hotel, and especially at night, there would be dozens and dozens of dead cochroaches lying around at the main entrance (besides the restaurant) and the staff didn't seem to bother about at least removing the dead ones until the next morning. Honest to say, I chose to have breakfast at another location. The quality and service at the pool area was completely inadequate, and most people would not spend more than 10 minutes there. I am usually not picky, but this hotel is 15 years behind its time, and was a huge disappointment based on the four-star rating and the price.

After reading one of the other reviews on this hotel I was skeptical to say the least about my 1 night stay. I was put up here to wait for a ship to arrive the following day and after the rat infested ship i'd just left I wasn't expecting too much from the hotel. On arrival my fears were well and truly put to rest as the hotel was more than adequate. When I got to my hotel room I was very pleased, spacious, nicely decorated, very clean and everything I could possibly want from a hotel room. The free wireless high speed internet was an extra bonus that you don't get in a lot of top hotels around the world. I can't comment on the area too much as my stay is so short but the DIC Star would be a great hotel for anyone staying in Vung Tau for any length of time.

We've stayed at this hotel 3 or 4 times in the last 3 years and it's been great! Originally we called ahead to book but we started getting lazy and would just walk in...which isn't a good idea! Every room we've been in is clean, has a private bathroom, mini bar, cable, closet, table and chairs, balcony and a/c. Their food is amazing either in their main floor dining room or on the outdoor patio upstairs. Last time we went, a 1hr body massage was $6 or $7 (plus tip)! The beach and their swimming pool is across the street, but there are sidewalks and it's super easy to cross. The only problem I've had swimming there is that I'm so white that the aquarium sized fish sometimes swim around my legs...thinking they're coral! There is another great restaurant about a 5 minute walk from the hotel heading back towards the water taxi...all the seafood is fresh and the dark beer is yummy!

This hotel was rated as a 4 star but really is a 1 star. It is not comparable to a 4 star US hotel. The hotel is only 2 years old but looks really old. The rooms were not clean, showers were inadequate (showers flooded bathroom) and pool facilities were dirty. The service of some of the hotel staff (i.e. dinning area and house keeping) was good. The hotel booked a tour of the city for our party of six but booked us with an old vehicle that broke down. We had to stop at the driver's house to wait for the car to be fixed. Not my idea of a tour. When we wanted to speak to the manger to discuss the issues we had experienced the front desk employee refused to allow us to speak to the manager. Eventually, we were able to address some concerns with an acting manager but was still not allowed to see the person in charge. I would be wary staying here. Do not expect 4 star service or facilities.
