5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

I visit Vung Tau about 4 - 5 times a year but most time I spent my time at Grand hotel Vung Tau.
It's good location : central park, facing the the beach
I love this architecture with luxurious rooms.
Friendly & helpful
Good food but quite expensive, of course they are 4 star hotel & the best one in Vung Tau city.
Good shared swimming pool with Palace Hotel Vung Tau

This hotel was a war time icon for Australian soldiers on rest leave from the Vietnam war from 1966 to 1972. Some years ago the Grand was renovated with the rooms being upgraded to a reasonable degree.

I found the room I had to be spacious and clean, no complaints about that at all. The breakfast was average only. The staff were friendly and helpful although I found that the check in for our group of 20 was slow and confused, even though we had timed our arrival to be well after the normal check in time of 2 PM.

The hotel is well located, no need to be next to a supermarket, there are enough small shops and restaurants around the area to suit most travellers. It is across the road from the area known as "Front Beach" which is no good for swimming due to the anchorage of the fishing fleet although there are other beaches of varying quality close by.

A ride up on top of Nui Lon (Big Mountain) in the cable car will give a great panorama view of the city.

Room Tip: Pick a room facing the beach..turn the aircon on low for a while as these west facing rooms tend to...

I was put up in the grand hotel for three days in a delux balcony room which was very nice and included a complimentary breakfast at the hotel restaurant . It was the worst breakfast I have had in any hotel they couldnt even get plain rice right. service was ok areas of the hotel are run down and grubby and aircon is not in the hall ways so you have worked up a sweat by the time you reach you room. The rates were probably over the top but the location is great. Palace hotel is a far better option. And if you want value stay in one of the various mini-hotels .

Room Tip: upstairs balcony rooms are good looking out to the sea

We did not get the rooms that we booked. Instead they gave us 2 room apartment to share.
The hotel is a walking distance from the ferry terminal and near the beach front. However it is far away from the main shopping centre. Room is rather old but clean with all amenities and not sound proof with loud music from the discotheque can be heard throughout the night. Many restaurants, bars and message parlours to winddown.

Room Tip: Choose room away from the discotheque.

We spent 5 nights over christmas at the Grand as we were there for a wedding.
Firstly let me say that we found the staff to be friendly, courtiess and obliging. Breakfast was very good as were other meals we had at the hotel restaurants.
The problem with the Grand is it badly run down and the cleanliness of some rooms is terrible with a lot of mould in some bathrooms, This is a small, well located hotel but no money has been put into the place for a long time and there are far better options in the general vicinity.
To make matters worse they shut the pool for the entire time we were staying at the hotel.
Don't blame the staff it is the owners who need to urgently spend the money to bring this place back up to a 3 or 4 star hotel.

I found out that during the Vietnam War the Grand Hotel was the Australian Army Officer's Mess. They certainly did it in style! Large, comfortable and clean rooms, delicious breakfast buffet, nice pool and top location on the beach and central to all the nightlife. The day spa also takes some beating.

I almost stayed at the grand but changed my mind after looking at the imperial on trip advisor and I am glad I did. The imperial was fantastic, ESP the staff. We went for a drink one night at the grand hotel bar and left after one drink. Apart from having a depressing feel, it was run as if by the government, no one smiled, service was slow and per functionary and there was zero atmosphere.
