We stayed in September in a family room (newer hotel) with our two teenage boys for two nights. Our room was clean and comfortable, airconditioned, with a bath and with a balcony. We arrived early morning on the train, so had two full days in Ninh Binh. We really enjoyed our stay, and put it all down to the very helpful people at Xuan Hoa Hotel. Particularly the owner, Mr Xuan. He bent over backwards for us and was a genuinely nice guy. We rented bikes (very cheap), with a mud map of the area supplied by the hotel on our first day, and cycled out to Trang An. (We were advised to avoid Tam Coc, as way too touristy). This was very do-able flat ride, and my boys didn't whinge too much! Trang An would have to be one of my favourite places in the whole of Vietnam. Stunning!! You have to go!! We only ate at the hotel while in Ninh Binh, and the food was great. It was also a great spot to have a few beers overlooking the lake out the front of the hotel. And Mr Xuan would come and join us if he wasn't busy with other guests. The next day Mr Xuan offered to hire us his private car, and we did a whole day trip of all his recommended spots around Ninh Binh. It only cost us $45usd for the whole day, including driver, on a Sunday. It was great having our own car, we could go at our own pace. We visited some awesome spots, my favourite being the Mua lookout walk, a huge walk up a lot of steps, (and the boys whinging the whole way), but the most stunning view ever!!!! You have to do that too!! Mr Xuan also offered us a two night trip to the mountains staying in a local village homestay, he would come with us. He had a book with photos and other peoples reviews, and if we had some spare time, would definately have done it. Next trip to Vietnam Mr Xuan. Our last night in Ninh Binh there was a "childrens festival" on. Mr Xuan invited us to join him and his grandchildren, so we marched around the neighborhood with all the neighborhood locals, with lanterns and drums, celebrating childrens day with them. And attended the festival afterwards with him. No idea what anyone was saying, but it was lovely to be involved in a local celebration. Mr Xuan also organised a local bus to Haiphong for us for the next morning. Overall, good hotel, good food, lovely people, make you feel very welcome and do anything for you. Definately recommend.
