Owner description: Located in Ninh Binh province 100 km southeast of Hanoi, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are two of the most picturesque spots in all of the north. For 41 years, from 968 to 1009 CE, Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam. Nearby Tam Coc is often referred to as “Ha Long among the rice paddies.” Visitors are conveyed by rowboat along the peaceful Tam Coc stream past green fields and the feet of mountains into the mouths of caves, where they encounter new surprises, like stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like gemstones just inches from the water.

It was still winter at that time but we still decided to visit Tam Coc. We took a day tour from our hotel in Hanoi.. the ride on the sampan took about 2.5 hours.. scenery was beautiful and stunning.. the cold weather doesn't stop us from enjoying the view.. during the ride, some sellers in other boats will try to sell you food at the turning point.. plus the rowers will also try to sell their goods to you during the way back.. ignore politely if u don't want to purchase.. overall it was still a great trip...

Stunning scenery, peaceful setting. We read many reviews telling us how much we would be hassled by traders at the turn around point, but this was not the case; we were asked a couple of times to buy souvenirs, and refused, but we were not hassled. We willingly tipped the boatman, as we felt he deserved it after rowing us around for an hour and a half !

The sampan ride was 2.5 hours filled with limestone mountains and green rice field. We were lucky to have sunny weather and it was easier to take great photo. I even recorded part of the boat ride. Our rower who can row with his feet and hand helped us to take photo. However, at one point he would stop and asked us to buy some goods. That was unexpected. We turned him down politely and we can just buy only if we want to. On the whole it was enjoyable and worth the trip. Just be prepared that the rower will ask for tip at the end of the ride. Get advice from the tour guide about the tip.

I visiting as a day trip during a trip to Hanoi, the trip is pretty uncomfortable being about 2.5 hrs along a road the goes from highway to construction site to dirt road! The Tam Coc valley and river is amazing and made the trip worthwhile, sitting in a boat being rowed along the river is great. Make sure you carry some extra cash if you want to avoid an ugly scene as the rowers will at one point produce a box full of tourist mementos, drinks etc and expect some kinda of purchase and tip. I also had a brief bike road around the area which was great - lots of rural scenes/animals etc between the limestone cliffs. If you have the time I would recommend to avoid a day trip and spend a night in the area, especially if part of a bike trip as the area is worth exploring without the long uncomfortable road trip.

The trip started out so well since our paddlers offered to take our picture and the scenery was very beautiful. Because Tet was nearing there weren't many boats on the river. At the turn-around point however we were approached by a lady selling drinks from here boat and when we declined buying a drink for ourselves she awkwardly asked us if we wanted to buy a drink for our paddlers. On the way back out paddlers then tried to sell us things and just before reaching the end asked us for a tip! My advice is to read the page on Tam Coc scams to make sure you are well prepared before going here, as it really does ruin the trip. Come full, have extra sealed water bottles and snacks in your bag, and don't show any interest in souvenirs.
