Owner description: Located in Ninh Binh province 100 km southeast of Hanoi, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are two of the most picturesque spots in all of the north. For 41 years, from 968 to 1009 CE, Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam. Nearby Tam Coc is often referred to as “Ha Long among the rice paddies.” Visitors are conveyed by rowboat along the peaceful Tam Coc stream past green fields and the feet of mountains into the mouths of caves, where they encounter new surprises, like stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like gemstones just inches from the water.

But watch out for the hard sell- drinks, photos, tshirts while you are a captive audience on their boat

This is a enjoyable one day for a reasonable price. After about two hours comfortable drive in an air conditioned vehicle you are provided with a good buffet lunch in a clean hotel and then taken along the river in a canoe. The canoe takes you through some caves in the water . Good experience. The canoe ride that takes about two hours up and down is not very comfortable but the beautiful scenery along the river will compensate. It is always advisable to take a rain coat when going in the boat. 35 US is what I paid and In my opinion it is reasonable for a tour of this nature.

Trully a dream place, with the most beatifull view I have seen in Vietnam. To us it was even nicer than the Halong Bay... Unfortunately scams are ruining it, lots of sales boat and there are rather persistent. Very annoying. Also make double sure you agree on the price before the departure, they will try to squeeze as much as they can from you.
I think it's a shame they are ruining this gem, and their own business.
Nevertheless, a must see when in Hanoi.

Tam Coc is stunningly beautiful, the scenery is spectacular but we opted out of the boat trip and decided to cycle the route. Granted you can't see the entire route but what you do see is fantastic! There are small shrines and temples along the way which you would miss on the boat and plenty of places to stop and dip your feet in the river. We noticed that the boats are something of a rip-off anyway for foreign tourists (Foreign: 2 people per boat Vietnamese: 4 people per boat) which was a bit annoying anyway so we decided to do it our own way! Would recommed Tam Coc and Ninh Binh as a cycling experience as a whole, I am certainly not an experienced cyclist so the mostly flat land was a giant bonus!

I booked a daytrip, and I am glad I did. Of course you could do it for half the money on your own, but what a hassle it would be. This was a convenient daytrip in a group of roughly 20-25 people. 3 hour bus ride, buffet lunch (average food, drinks not included). We visited 2 palaces on the way to tam coc, but they were rather boring. The river cruise with the paddlers is great. However, be prepared for people who try to sell you stuff (pictures they took from you, food, etc) and they can be rather annoying. Also, bring warm clothes!!! We went in January, and I am glad I had long johns, mitten, scarf, and a hat. It can get really cold on the boats!
