The climb is probably the steepest near the Tam Coc district in Ninh Binh but is not as difficult as described by travel books some of which say visitors should be prepared to spend two hours for this journey. Before the climb, the hill (not much a 'mountain') looked quite high from the entrance at the hill foot. Also each of the 500+ steps was quite wide with many being more than 1 foot. But in fact, as regular but not hard hikers,we took only 15 min to reach the top. Any reasonably fit travelers should be able to do it in less half an hour. The view looking over the paddy field nearby and the route end of the Tam Coc boat trip from afar is interesting and should be excellent if the day is clear. Nice climb followed by relaxing rest. Be careful when walking down as it is easier to hurt your knee. Walk slowly if you feel more comfortable.

As you approach the cave and then the start of the stairway, there is an interesting collection of the Vietnamese version of the Japanese bonsai trees lining the walkway. These are larger, in planters, and are of high value locally.

Though not impressive, the short cave/tunnel is interesting, as is its history.

The highlight is, of course the stairway to the top of the karst. This is best as a morning hike, before the heat of the day, but it is not long and the views are stunning. Spend a few minutes enjoying the breezes, and then head to Trang An, rather than Tam Coc.

the stairs are not too difficult and the views on Tam Coc river on one side and Ninh Binh and rice paddies on the other side are simply beautiful. The cave, or rather tunnel, is hidden on the other side of the large pond. No so much worth it on its own however.

Climb up 500 stairs to reach the top and you will have amazing view over Tam Coc. It is better to visit at the end of May to the beginning of June, you can see the river and yellow rice fields below.
