My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon for two nights and this is one of our favorite places we have ever been. This is a huge outdoor style resort with cabana hotel suites spread throughout the property surrounding individual pools. This is all against the backdrop of the sharp limestone mountains that are beautiful. The resort is not far from tourist attractions but is not in a tourist area itself..it is in a local countryside town...so you get a wide array of experiences here...luxury resort, local country life and key tourist attractions. The rooms are wooden and beautiful. We had an outside private patio too with an outdoor shower. You hear a lot of tropical bugs and animals outside when you sleep...for people from the city it is very cool. The restaurant is delicious, lots of local Vietnamese food (I tried goat which was the local specialty but didn't really like it...everything else was delicious). Huge buffet breakfasts included everyday, we ate pho soup each morning with a lot of other good food. Great swimming pools around the resort and a bar at the main pool. The service is A+ everywhere on the resort. As far as activities, first day we rented bikes and rode through the countryside which was really cool. We met people in some of the country towns we rode through and played soccer with them...got to see all the rice farmers and limestone mountains that the region is famous for. We got a couples massage at the hotel then the second day we got a private tour guide with car from the resort and they took us to Nam Cuc, Hoa Lu and Kenh Ga Fishing Village...all much more touristic places but really amazing nature and history. The tour guide also took us to a bar down the street from the resort and we drank with some people from the neighborhood. As for the value, this experience in the US would cost many times more...I thought it was a great value for this type of luxury and we hope to go back as soon as possible!

This is the nicest place to stay in the ninh binh area-- note that it is a good 30 min drive from Tam Coc.

It is a very nice and relaxing resort for families. We liked the large rooms with a full size day bed that can sleep 2 kids, private patio, outside shower-- we are a family of 5 and fit comfortably. Great to start seeing nicer hotels in Ninh Binh area!

Staff tried very hard to please but service is still below standard, especially in the restaurant. One evening it took 2.5 hours for 2 people in our group to get their order...staff were apologetic and 'comped' us, which is nice, but no one seemed to be in charge of each table. They work all together, one taking the order and others bringing food but no one was 'accountable' for any one table so things fell they the cracks. Otherwise our expectations for the food was low as per others' reviews and feedback from our expat friends here in Hanoi. We were surprised that food was actually pretty good-- sea bass, duck, Caesar salad, child burger. So do keep expectations low but you too may be pleasantly surprised...

Spa prices are much more expensive than what we pay in Hanoi, so we were hesitant but decided to try...We had problems communicating and trying to book on a Sunday morning, a big holiday in VN and the hotel was full, but they were not properly staffed to handle more then one or two spa guests (strange). Then sasha, the Ukrainian spa manager/ resort medical doctor, appeared on the seen and sorted every thing out within minutes -- he totally gets it, so ask to speak with him if you run into obstacles w the spa reception-- and my two friends and I were invited to do sauna and hammam for free before the spa treatment started 30 minutes later. I got the salt body scrub by Phuong.....wow. Well worth the 'resort' price...

Nice kids club-- kids spent hours here one morning ( as moms were in the spa) having fun in climb structure, arts room, and othe indoor areas w air con.

Pool was also nice-- we recommend eating at the pool to get away from the main dining room which can be stressful/ hectic. Pool is quiet, comply and you order from the same menu.

Try karaoke room! What a riot! Kids and adults had fun. Make sure they show you how to find English songs.

Emeralda is one of the most beautiful and welcoming hotels in Ninh Binh. The resort is well-kept, the rooms are spacious and the staff responds quickly to customers' needs. We stayed there for one night and we really enjoyed all of features of the hotel. The property is serene and the indoor and outdoor pools were very well-kept and relaxing. The location is also ideal, in that it's about a 10 minute walk from the worker's town - there are small supermarkets with basic goods and about a handful of places to eat. A ten minute walk the other way will get you to the Van Long National Reserve, where you can get an hour long boat ride for about $7.
What impressed us most, however, is how attentive and responsive the staff was to our situation. My boyfriend's debit card got stuck in the ATM machine at the airport in Hanoi on the first day of our trip and we had not been able to properly contact the bank to get it back. We asked the staff to call the bank and they were quick to help us - the manager, Christie, personally talked to us about it and had a few of her staff members assist us with sorting out the whole situation. Without even asking her for this, she also arranged for a private car, with a driver and hotel staff, to take us back to the hotel we were staying at the next day, free of charge. We were extremely satisfied with the service and our stay and we'd definitely go back if we were ever in the area again.

A stay in Ninh Binh to see the spectacular Karsts and caves must mean a stopover at the Emeralda resort. It comprises a very large complex of traditionally built wooden villas, most of which are single storey. We were upgraded to a DeLuxe suite, which was enormous. There was exquisite detailing in the rafters (20 feet above the bed!), an amazing variety of concealed lighting, and a bathroom big enough for a party. The villa was very comfortable and quiet, and the staff at the resort are exceptionally attentive and friendly. Many of them had little English. The Resort is primarily a conference centre, catering mainly to Vietnamese clients. There were few tourists during our 3-night stay. The location is not ideal; it is isolated from the town, approached via the local cement factories, but it is set in beautifully maintained and extensive grounds. There is no wifi outside the lobby and restaurants although the rooms do have Ethernet. There is a good organic restaurant with well prepared Western and Vietnamese food. But it is expensive by local standards. This is the only upmarked hotel in the area, and is highly recommended

Room Tip: We were upgraded to a superior room. in a cluster of similar rooms about 400 yards from main recep...

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds that are very well cared for. Each room is located in single storey dwellings that are clustered in small groups; ours was in a group that had its own pool. The room was huge, as was the bed. It had an impressive, high ceiling, where you could see the carved wooden rafters. There was an outside shower and small garden. The bathroom was huge. The communal swimming pool was big as was the indoor one they had there. Unfortunately there was a downside. The room smelt a little damp, the sun loungers and the day bed in the room were rather grey and stained and in the night after we heard rustling, we found rats droppings in the bathroom! We also found the food in the restraint very disappointing and not what you would expect from that sort of hotel.

I had read about Ninh Binh in the lonely planet and was glad. A typhoon cancelled one night of our 2 night cruise on Halong Bay and we were over the fumes and noise of Hanoi. We went to Ninh Binh the inland Halong bay and stayed at the Emeralda Resort. It is an absolutely beautiful resort with commanding views of the limestone karsts. We nearly didn't go to Halong Bay for our 1 night cruise. The resort is beautiful with many pools and resort facilities. Our room was well appointed with an extra sized bath and walk in shower and the softest bed I've ever slept on in Asia! The breakfast was great and we had buffet dinner at the hotel with plenty of everything. I had a spa at the spa centre. Price was excellent for us however it is the off season so it was a good price. I would say 5 star at a 3 star price. The staff were excellent and were very attentive. Fab Fab Fab

Until we saw a short grab on TV about the Ninh Binh area we knew nothing about it. It looked beautiful and indeed it was. It is well worth a visit. We selected the Emerelda after looking at TripAdvisor. It gets mixed reviews but we did not want to stay in Ninh Binh itself. This proved to be a wise decision as the town is pretty uninspiring. The resort was brilliantly located next to the Van Long Nature Reserve. You can take a short walk to the river and hire a boat to take you around the reserve for a very modest fee indeed.

The resort is lovely. All of our rooms were spacious, spotlessly clean and well appointed. They are based in clusters around a small pool. There is a larger pool if you want it. The restaurants were fine although the selection was a bit limited for a four night stay. It might be worth their considering a casual dining area with snacks for a light lunch or supper - perhaps in the wine bar or pool bar? Breakfast was excellent and we loved the crispy baguettes.

The spa was wonderful. I had the best massage ever!

The tours we organised through the hotel were excellent. We cannot speak highly enough of them. The guide was knowledgable and spoke excellent english. He was flexible enough to cope with the rather inclement weather and the local restaurant he took us to for lunch was truly an experience not to miss.

The service was uniformly good starting with the pick up we arranged from the Hanoi Airport. We were hours late owing to first a cancelled flight and then the closure of the Airport due to bad weather. Despite this we were met cheerfully and transported efficiently to the Resort.

If you are there in the wet season as we were the umbrellas supplied are large and sturdy. We nearly didn't take them when we did the boat trip at the nature reserve as it looked fine. Thank goodness the staff member we spoke to before leaving pressed us the take them - he was right, we were wrong (but at least not too wet!)

Room Tip: Our group had a variety of rooms - standard and deluxe. They were uniformly excellent.
