We came to Ninh Binh from Hanoi to visit the Trang An caves. Stayed two nights in the Queen Hotel and paid $36 for two nights. Hotel is 1 minute walk from the train station and has a couple of places to eat next door. Our stay was ok but spoiled by what seemed to be an attempt to rip us off when we booked a car to take us to Trang An.

We asked at reception about getting to Trang An and the receptionist gave us a map of Ninh Binh showing the hotel and city and she marked on it where Trang An was. She said it took 45 mins to 1 hour to get there by car and the cost would be $19 each. If we left at 11:30 we would be back by 4pm so not much time to do anything else. The cost included the car waiting 2 hours for us while we visited the caves on a boat. We agreed to this and the car picked us up at 11:30 - a small, quite old Kia with no seatbelts (we didn't expect any). After 15 minutes drive through the city and countryside we arrived at Trang An. Hmm. Not an hour then. We took the boat tour and the driver drove us back at 2:10pm and we were back just before 2:30pm. When it came to pay for the car at reception I said I was unhappy that we'd been given the wrong information about the length of time it took to get to Trang An and that I didn't want to pay $38 for 30 minute drive. The receptionist said he was sorry the driver took a short cut because he was in a hurry to get back and the drive usually took 1 hour each way! After lengthy discussions he agreed to reduce the price to $25. I recommend anyone wanting to visit Trang An checks out the other hotels to see what they charge or if the weather is ok enquire about hiring a bike. We did see taxis in Ninh Binh so maybe this would be a better option.

Apart from this issue the hotel is ok for the price. Our room had air conditioning and a tv but no safe. They have one at reception. Breakfast was one choice of drink and one choice of food. Banana/pineapple pancakes were good. Wifi in the bedroom worked fine.

Ninh Binh itself is a bit depressing - maybe it was because it rained and was cold. Next time I'd probably look into booking a tour from Hanoi. Definitely recommend Trang An - there were no other foreign tourists - just lots of Vietnamese. Cost was 100,000 Dong each for a 2 hour boat trip. Gorgeous scenery and a great experience.

The Queen hotel was the best hotel we stayed in during a month in Vietnam. It is located very close to the train station but we were not affected by noise. We were met when we came off the train without being asked and this was just the beginning of the wonderful service we received. The hotel is absolutely spotless and there was a wonderful view from our seventh floor room. There is a small family run restaurant close by with wonderful food.

POSITIVE

- large and clean room and bathroom
- generally friendly staff (they do insist on the tours but if you insist on what you really want to do they will help)
- the food quality from the hotel's kitchen (either for breakfast or lunch / dinner) was quite good
- very close to the train station or bus station (within 1 minute walk of both)

NEGATIVE
- rented a bike from them at $2 a day - quite expensive as the bike was old and in bad shape
- rented a motorbike from them at 10$ for a day- it was quite expensive (it was an old over-used bike)
- they cannot provide a good map of the city or the area (maybe to make it more difficult for tourists to wander around on their own) - but this seems to be the rule on most hotels around ninh binh

You can check-in early (in case you arrive in Ninh Binh by early train or bus) for a fee of 100,00 VND ($5).

We thought Ninh Binh was a small size town with beautiful surroundings to visit - altough this is somewhat true the majority of Ninh Binh surroundings are industrial and due to tourism everything is under (re-)construction (huge roads, tunnels, bridges, hotels, tourist facilities). The somewhat new roads that travel from Ninh Binh to Tam Coc, Trang An, Mua Cave, Hua Lua are quite scenic but full of tourists. You can try to go to Ken Ga or especially to Van Long. The trip to those sites may not be the most beautiful (factories, trucks and a lot of dust) and far (up to 25 km, we did it on bike but it was tough; you'd be better of on bike or car). Van Long is just amazing - much better than Tam Coc (no tourists, quite untouched - lots of animals, birds - and peaceful); you do not feel as caddle there and can really enjoy nature in a relaxed and less destructive way. It won't last long though, I'm sure - as someone said before Ninh Binh is turning into a vietnamese disneyland like destination.

And a eating tip in Ninh Binh - find Pho Bo 24; amazing street joint with some pho optins and a couple of fried rice and fired noodles options. Some of the best food we had in vietnam - it's packed with locals day and night. It's amazingly cheap (no more than 25,000, approx $1.75, for each dish) with big portions. It's a street place so do not expect restaurant like service or conditions. English menu available. It's about 15 minutes walk from the hotel (including a stretch on noisy and chaotic highway 10 - that cuts across ninh binh town).

Nice hotel with great staff, located in the heart of the center there are lots of sights to see and the hustling, bustling area always has something to discover. Breakfast is ok, geared more towards Asian people than Europeans but as long as you don't want tons of choice it'll do. I would say that if you are sensitive to noise don't get a room at the front as the incessant beeping of mopeds and cars, and the early morning government tannoy announcements in the street, never let up!

Stayed here about a week ago. Our $18 room was clean and comfortable and had an interior window that opened up onto the stairwell. The queen mini hostel is opposite (same owner).
The breakfast (one meal and one drink from the menu) is included in the rate and is fine, nothing special. The cafe 2 doors down (same side of road) has really cheap and tasty food/beer and is definitely worth mentioning.

The hotel staff are friendly and appreciated our efforts in speaking a few words in Vietnamese although they all speak pretty good English (I feel cheeky writing that when we are in their country). The owner, however, came across a tad conceited and we felt that we had to tiptoe around him a bit. Our stay of 3 nights was trouble free but we did see the owner having a big long argument with a backpacker girl outside the hostel in front of everyone (apparently over laundry).

Extras - We paid $25 for 2 mopeds and a guide for the day. The bikes were ok and the guide extremely friendly, but we had to pay alot more for entrance fees, parking and fuel, and we would have appreciated some guidance/information on the sites visited (as that is what we thought we were paying for!). The next day we hired a moped for $5 to go it alone to Cuc Phong Park (brilliant day out) and this bike was a bit below par - no indicators and shoddy.

We stayed here for three nights and enjoyed this nice place a lot! We payed 18 $ for a big room with two big beds and a nice view, it was always clean and provided with everything needed.
The breakfast was included and alright.
Someone from the hotel (maybe the manager) offered a tour , but we went to see everything on our own, as we prefer to travel individually.
Although he was very polite and friendly, just like the rest of the staff, we felt a little pushed.
Apart from that, we can really recommend the hotel. Go to the roof terrace and have some cold beer with a beatiful view.
