“We'd loved to stay longer”
Reviewed December 29, 2013 via mobile

Given the usual peak time around Christmas we tried to book a room 2 month in advance and only got one night. Everything else was already booked out. Bad for us - but a good sign showing high customer demand.
Nguyen Shack lays some kilometres apart from busy Can Tho, perfectly nested in a curve of a Mekong canal, overlooking the water and the rice paddies around (they collect you by boat from the next street). The rooms are constructed of bamboo panels with love for detail, light and open, with a great veranda and hammocks to watch the Mekong water pass by. The food menu has plenty of good choices and everything we tried tasted awesome (they have free complimentary fruits and shakes - mango-jackfruit!!). And the two dogs and the cat are great entertainers.
The Canadian guys who run the place gave us us very warm welcome and always had time for a chat. They offer some activities in the region which are great fun. We visited the floating morning market - watching the sunrise by boat is worth getting up at 5 a.m.! - and on the bike tour through the village we learned much about the local life (rice factory, blacksmith...) which was very interesting.
All in all we can do little but recommend this premium homestay (with premium but fair prices). We would have loved to stay longer. So make sure you book early.
Thanks guys for a great day with you!

I recently stayed at Nguyen Shack and it remains one of the highlights of my three weeks in Vietnam. My partner and I caught the bus to Can Tho and then a taxi close to the shack. If you do this the taxi will drop you off on the road near a "Nguyen Shack" sign. We didn't realise that to get to the shack a short boat trip is required and so we walked around the river for a while searching in vain. Look out for a second "Nguyen Shack" sign that points to the river and wait there for one of the staff to take you the rest of the way by boat.

The location is a delightful surprise and the staff and service is very warm. Nguyen Shack has many resident animals that are very friendly including one adorable piglet named Bacon. Tours into the surrounding villages are available and give a great insight into the daily life of the Mekong area. The bicycle tour is particularly fun and includes a sampling of local rice wine.

We only stayed two nights which was enough time to go on the three tours the Shack offers, but for those who really want to relax and watch the river flow a longer booking would be the perfect remedy.

This was a wonderful find for us and glad we decided to stay here. The place is reached via a 400m walk through a river side footpath which makes it very interesting and when you get to the bungalows you know you are in for a treat. There are only 5 rooms and a main living communal space. Don't expect a 5 star luxury room here but an authentic bamboo hat room with shower, mosquito nets and fans all very clean. When we were there they were finishing the new huts over the water and looking at some recent photos they looked fantastic and a shame we were a few moths too late! The host Theu and her boyfriend Maxim are really great, offering great hospitality with amazing food all freshly cooked. The cocktails that Maxim makes are also very nice! The river boat trips and the cycle tours finished off a great stay, fully relaxed and happy to have experienced the Mekong in such a way!

Well what can I say. This place was great. Ran by a great owner, the place far exceeded my expectations

The cost was very good value, the food was outstanding. It is all prepared in a kitchen that you can see the two expert cooks working away.

The two trips that we went on were excellent and sets great scene. They two were a steel at $12 for the market tour and $10 for the bike tour.

The rooms were well built, clean and had great views.

All in all 100% value for money. Will go again

We stayed unfortunately only one night in Nguyen Shack, but it was amongst the places we liked the most during our Vietnam journey. The bungalows are awesome, the atmosphere is so quiet (only 5 bungalows) and authentic. The owner Theu and her boyfriend Maxim are great hosts. Hospitality is key there. You have water and fresh fruits the whole day for free. Overall the food is very good and reasonably priced, despite lack of competition (meaning, there is nothing in the surroundings where you could go for lunch/dinner - but this is absolutely not needed, as food is excellent there). If you sit in the restaurant you have nice view on the Mekong Delta, joined by all the homestay pets, which is quite funny.

If you decide to stay there, you should for sure do the morning boat tour to the floating market as well as the bike tour, where you see really nice places and get close to the locals. Those tours are really individual and fantastic.

We loved it. Many thanks Theu and Maxim and hope to see you again at your Nguyen Shack!

My gf and I stayed here for 2 nights and have to say was the only place we have been to so far on our 5 week trip which we felt like we wanted to stay longer - and this is not because our other stops weren't great it's just 'The Shack' has a way of making you feel at home.

After 4 days in Ho Chi we headed down here on the bus, then in the taxi...and then the boat, sounds like a hassle but it's not and shouldn't put anyone off as when you get there you're greeted by a friendly host, and beautiful backdrop of sleepy Vietnam life, a cat, 2 dogs and an adorable pet pig named Bacon.

Food is served when you want it, and unlike what we expected isn't hiked up as there are no other options - oh and it's bloody tasty too! Free bottled water and fruit whenever you want it, and beer/soft drinks and good value too. There is genuinely nothing any sane person could pick a proper fault with this place - did I mention the WiFi is lighting fast aswell, better than any connections we had in the cities.

We also did all the tours, the bike ride was a highlight, unbelievable value and informative and a rarity in SE Asia our questions were answered very well.

All in all, the perfect place after a stressful city stint, or just a place to relax.

Feel free to miss this one out but you'll kick yourself!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms feel more secluded than others so go for one of them unless climbing ladders is a pro...

We were met by the river by the "boatman" who took us back to the shack where we were given a welcome drink and checked in.
We loved the room, with an almost outside feel to it and sat on the balcony watching the boats go by. We did all the tours which were very informative and even went on the market tour twice just so we could spend the time on our own at the street market.
The owner and staff were lovely and made our stay very enjoyable. I would recommend this place to anyone staying in the area.
The peacefulness of being away from everything made it quite special.

Room Tip: if you dont like the idea of climbing a ladder to your room, request one on the ground!
