“Excellent value for money, great staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013 via mobile

This is an excellent budget hotel for those who are more interested in experiencing Vietnamese culture than staying in their hotel room...

Me and my husband stayed in Hotel Xoai a few nights in the budget room. The room was small, with no TV or a fridge but with a very good a/c and a strong shower.

We wanted to experience a real Vietnamese life in the farms and so we booked a boat trip to Mekong delta and a rice noodle factory. We were a bit afraid that an English speaking guide will have a poor English, as it happened to us before, however we were positively surprised. The girl who was our guide was speaking excellent English. We found out many interesting things about Vietnamese people and their life. The trip was a really good value for money.

We also went with a guy working in the reception to a couple of restaurants and a coffee place in Can Tho. We tried a few dishes typical for that part of Vietnam. The food was very very cheap - you wouldn't eat so cheaply in Can Tho if you would go on your own....Except for us there were two other people staying in the hotel, so it was great to meet other travellers. It was a great evening.

There are not many things to do in Can Tho in the evening so the initiative presented by a staff in the hotel was highly appreciated.

To summarise, this place is a great value for money. Be advised that it is a 20m walk to a city centre, but you have a supermarket on your way and a few nice and cheap places to eat in and have a drink.

I was drawn to this by its high ranking but a bit worried by the negative reviews, and I want to post to voice my approval. For around $20-25, I found this to be a worthy stay. I also found it to be a perfect balance between local authenticity and western service. Kudos to the staff, and particularly, Dang Hong, for the extra efforts to accommodate our requests and solve any issues.

Likes: great shower; fantastic air-conditioning; modern facilities; attentive staff; ease to rent a motorbike on-site; good views from roof.

Dislikes: smaller room, no fridge.

Only stayed for one night, but it was extremely clean, had an amazing shower (one of the best in SE Asia!) and the staff were really helpful. Advertised as having a rooftop terrace, which they do, but there was no one there selling drinks or food, just some tables and a couple of hammocks. Had a great view though! They also booked our bus to Ho Chi. The rooms were very small, and you can find cheaper places to stay, but still a decent place.

A cozy place to stay. The staff is a very friendly and the hotel has a few nice surprises, like the welcome juice we got when we checked in which was a nice refreshment in the Vietnamese weather. The hotel is very modern, so the bathroom was spotlessly clean. I booked a floating market tour with them and it was enjoyable. I highly recommend this place for people who don't want to spend too much money and want a proper place to stay during their holiday in Can Tho.

We had a twin bedded room on the third floor - the furniture and facilities were excellent:

Computer with big screen, fast WIFI, comfortable beds (but very narrow), wardrobe and two shelves, clean bathroom.
Bed linen and towels were clean and of good quality and the cleanliness in the entire hotel was great. The AC in our room did not work so well. The electricit is disconnected when leaving the room, and as the sun was shining in the room, it was boiling when we returned. We did not get i to a comfortable temperature all evening.

However, the room was absolutely tiny. With two people in it, you almost felt claustrophobic - so I find it a bit overpriced for 19USD.
We also had a single room - again, very clean, a bit of furniture bit so small, it only had the bed and bathroom and one shelve.
Again, the quality is good - but the room is tiny for this price without breakfast in a rural area.

Moreover, the location is about 10-15 minutes from the river, having to cross two very busy streets.
And the hotel does offer bicycles for rent. but the price for 1 bike is 85.000Dong, which is an absolute joke. I rented high quality bikes in town for 40.000 Dong.
Since the hotel is so far away from town, they should compensate for that by either giving bikes for free or for a very little fee - but charging 85.000Dong for the bikes seems to me that they want to take advantage of their bad location.

The service of the front office girls was great though, they gave a friendly and informative briefing about the area and recommended some excellent cafes and restaurants.

If I would come back to Can Tho, I would not stay here again though - there are cheaper places in a more central location. They might not be as new, but overall offer better value for money.

The hotel is brand new so the room was really clean and modern including a desktop PC!!! The staff was really nice and friendly. They helped us to arrange a trip to the floating market and also bus to Ho Chi Minh City. Good value for money.

We arrived at the hotel from Saigon and, for the first time in nearly 3 months in Vietnam, we had to pay up front for our room. We had booked a basic double room for $15 and basic is the right word. The same thing in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh would probably cost less than half that amount.

We went straight into Can Tho and discovered another drawback of the hotel, it is at least a 20 minute walk from anywhere you want to be in Can Tho. We were told by the receptionist we could find food places down Nguyet Viet Hong but we didn't see any as we walked it's entire length. This was frustrating as we had been advised to go to the waterfront for food but we thought the receptionist would know better as he was a local.

The following morning, we were woken up at about 915am hammering and drilling. I know this is relatively late but it only went on for about 20 minutes so why could they not have done the work later in the day.

Later that same day, we were waiting for the lift and as the door opened, the hotel manager pushed passed us without saying 'Hello' or 'excuse me' or even acknowledging our existence. I was shocked at his rudeness.

We handed in some washing at reception and, as she didn't advise us of the price, we guessed it would be about the same as the rest of Vietnam (about $1/kilo or less). Wrong, we collected our laundry the following day and we're charged just under $12 for 2.8kg. That is disgusting. Absolutely no need for washing to be that expensive, and, if I'm completely honest, it didn't smell that clean.

Further to this, we were in the hotel for 3 nights and, although the room was cleaned, our towels were definitely not changed.

Good points were excellent WiFi signal in our room (4th floor) and relatively good signal on the roof. However, if you want a drink in the rooftop bar, you have to get your drink from reception and take it upstairs. Not ideal when the lift was out of order.

The market tour we organised through the hotel was fantastic. We set our alarm for 5.15am as the taxi was due to pick us up at 5.30 (5.45 Vietnam time!) but we were unnecessarily awoken by the reception calling the room at 5am. Another group on the tour were also called at around 5am and when we got downstairs, the front doors were locked with no sign of the taxi.

All in all, we were disappointed by the quality of the hotel. You get a lot more for your money throughout Vietnam but as there is a lack of alternative accommodation in Can Tho, the Hotel Xoai can obviously pretty much charge what they like. If you do have to stay here, get your laundry done before you arrive.
