This is a very challenging one day hike as the trail is very steep and depending on the season the weather conditions can seriously affect your experience. The altitude sickness is not a joke and should be taken seriously. You are ascending way over 3000m in one day and the low atmospheric pressure at the top can easily knock you down. If you’re visiting during rainy season you’re guaranteed to experience some heavy rain and slippery tails. Good hiking boots and proper rain gear are must-haves for climbing Muhavura. I didn’t see a lot of fire ants on our path which had been a major issue in other hiking trails in Uganda. However, you can always carry some insect repellents and spray them on your shoes and toes in case you come across some of these annoying ants.
Despite all the challenges, the magnificent Crater Lake at the top and the change in vegetation make the hike absolutely worth it. The Crater Lake is unreal and will make you forget about all the hassle of getting there. The guides are very helpful in making sure that you can reach the summit even though you might be seriously affected with altitude sickness.
