Best in Sukhothai

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 13, 2013
We stayed at the Sukhothai Heritage Resort for three nights last week. My wife is from Sukhothai and we've stayed in half a dozen hotels there over several years while visiting her family. None of the hotels were satisfactory. This hotel is certainly is the most comfortable in the area for westerners. We knew of it a number of years ago, but avoided it because it is 30-40 minutes outside of Sukhothai (right next to the airport). This time we rented a van (10 passenger!) with driver at the airport for 1800 B per day plus gas (best to reserve ahead during high season), so we had transportation whenever we wanted it, and the extra space in the van was nice for taking family and friends around to see some of the local sites, visit people, etc. When I had enough of the heat and wanted a hamburger and shake, I just had the driver take me back to the hotel and took a dip in the pool, while my wife continued her family visits. The distance was not really a problem.
My backpacking days are over, so I want a clean comfortable hotel when we travel, with decent Thai and western food, and this is the only one I have found in Sukhothai. It's very quiet (I never heard an airplane, traffic, barking dog, thumping music, etc.), the bed is comfortable, the two pools are clean with no chlorine smell (bromine filters?), wifi is free and works, BBC is on the TV, and service is excellent with English speaking staff. Each day one or two tourist buses would show up, which concerned me at first, but they all were older German speaking tourists who were quiet and polite. The hotel never was crowded. Other than a few baby strollers, I never saw any children around. There are extensive areas of unprotected reflecting pools and the swimming pools have only 1 and 1.5 m depths, so I don't think it would be a good place for active young kids. One morning we took two of the bikes out, and another I went for a jog. I ate every breakfast and dinner at the restaurant, both very good. The ambiance is quite relaxing with traditional Thai architecture. We reserved a Deluxe room on their web site, but were put in one of the "Jacuzzi Suites" at the end of a wing - no mention of an upgrade - not sure if they have reclassified the rooms or just gave us a "silent" upgrade. It cost about 3000 B ++ per night, which seemed very reasonable for the very large room. A few minor negatives - the mosquitoes come out at dusk, so dinner on the open restaurant terrace can be unpleasant. Either sit inside the air conditioned space or ask for some repellant lotion (which really works). My wife claims the mosquitoes are not so bad later in the evening, but I can't verify that. There is only one sink with no toe space in an otherwise beautiful bathroom. As everywhere in Thailand, open burning of trash and debris is common, so it is not possible to leave your windows or doors open without risking smoke in your room. The room smelled musty at first (also common in Thailand), but went away with the AC running. There are about a dozen bikes to use for free, but someone should clean the bird crap off the seats! Also there are a lot of old cigarette butts in the stones off the room terraces that need to be picked up...
Overall, we really enjoyed out stay, and will definitely return on our next visit to Sukhothai. For the usual tourist, I would try to arrive late afternoon or early evening, visit the Historical Park in a rented van or car with driver in the morning (you have to make the trip to town from the airport anyway), return to the hotel in the afternoon for a swim and peaceful evening, and be on your way the next morning, after an early bike ride around the hotel and airport area - my favorite airport in the world, but that's another review.

Beautiful hotel, luxurious rooms, lovely pools which is great if that is all you want but a bit far out to explore or do anything else.

The service in the restaurant was a bit hit and miss and a bit pricer but tasted good.

Amazing hotel, if you are looking for real luxury and top end comfort this is the hotel you should go for. Eating in the hotel is also a great experience as the food is amazing too. Not the best location as it is on the embassy area , but a real treat once you are in there and if you dont mind taking a taxi to go and visit teh city.

The hotel is very comfortable and clean, but its in the middle of nowhere. If you have no transportation, don't even think of coming here. But if you do, there's a lot of positives...
Helpful staff
Nice rooms
Comfy bed
Good breakfast
Good towels and washcloths!
Robes and slippers
Swimming pools
Good lighting in rooms

On the negative side...
You're charged for EVERYTHING.We asked for ice because we had a slight injury that required ice for swelling. They charged 35B plus VAT and service charge.
The menu at the restaurant is limited. Im vegetarian and they try to accommodate me, but the choices are limited and overpriced.
There's no possibility of choosing another restaurant because nothing is nearby.
everything includes VAT and service charge of 10%

Our organized tour (bus of 40) spent one night here in November 2012. The grounds, pool, rooms, etc, are beautiful but the service for everything was so slow... asked for the check from dinner at 8:15pm, asked several times, got it at 8:50pm! Drinks at the outdoor bar took 25 minutes to come... mine, the wife's drink took another 10 minutes.

The staff here needs some serious training! We stayed in 5 hotels on our trip, service wise, this was the worst. Also, a but funny but sad, in the room, they have a price list of everything in the room down to the iron and lamps!

This hotel is off the beaten path, you cannot walk or get to anywhere easily, also because it is surrounded by rice patties and lotus ponds there are thousands and thousands of bugs, not just mosquitoes. Once our drinks made it us, we took them back to the room to get away from the bugs.

I almost had a severe sense of humour failure when we arrived at Sukhothai after long drive from Ayutthaya and found we still had c30kms to go to the hotel! This is the main problem with the hotel - it is in the middle of nowhere, not in Sukhothai and takes over 45 mins to drive to the old city. And it isn't heritage either. Newly built, rather characterless, huge imposing reception areas...but small rooms & tiny bathrooms (we had a 'superior' room). Certainly not the boutique hotel it purports to be. The only 'resort' facility is the pool which is highly chlorinated (no spa, no sports facilities apart from bikes). All in all, it does not live up to its name!

For most of the year, even in November which is supposedly cooler, it is very sweaty to visit the sites in the middle of the day so best time to go is as soon as the park opens at 6am. That's why I would not recommend this hotel, but rather stay near the old city.
On the plus side, the beds are comfy, it has good/free Wifi and a range of TV channels inc BBC and Nat Geo. If you do stay there and want local food in a non-a/c ambiance, then there is a good family run restaurant 5 mins walk away called Buaban Lagoon which serves cool Singha beers at Bt 110 a bottle and genuine Thai food in a nice waterside setting.

Room tip: If you want to use the pool regularly, then would opt for a downstairs poolside room with direct access.
