I mean it is really like in the film except for the drug dealersn (there are none) and the beach is not white but golden. No Streets, no Shops, no Scammers, no Pubs, no drunken people, no restaurants just pure nature and nice people.
The Beach is lonely and when you are lucky you can have it all for yourself. The water is blue and clear and the jungle is amazing. This is the first jungle I didn't find any garbage in like I did in Koh Phangan for example.
The staff was always friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was very relaxing.
If you get to bored you can join one of the many activities they have there.
I for example went on the jungle hike. This is not like the normal hikes I have been so far. That means crawling and climbing through the jungle. For me it was even more difficult because I had to carry my tripod but it was worth it I got great pictures.
If you have one of the beachview bungalows you can see the sunrise over the beach. Unfortunately I did not have one but I was sitting in front of one several times to see the sunrise.
The only problem I had with this Island is that there is no WiFi and power is only available from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
I will definitely return to this place but next time I will bring 2 camera bodys and my macro lense.
But be aware if you go there If you are not really into nature and if you like crowded places or you need things like room service, WiFi, 7/11 etc. etc. do not go there you probably will not like it.

Looking for a laid back, superbly managed island retreat a short distance from the frenetic Phuket world. Koh Ra is just that. We spent 5 days on the island enjoying a magnificent beach a two minute saunter from our beach house. The only people on this palm tree beach were the same friendly people with whom you share an amazing array of Thai dishes. Although the accommodations are screened, we saw no mosquitoes or sand flies. You can get great Thai massages, take forest walks, stalk good tropical birds and snorkel about a close-by rocky headland. Good coral reef fish are just a short wade off the beach. There is no coral here but coral reef snorkeling and diving could be arranged as day trips. (Make sure you inquire about the best time for clam weather and clear water) This is an ecolodge where you can see unexpected animals and birds and where lights do go out at 10:00pm. But what a magic place to decompress!

There are so many places you can go to in Thailand if you are looking for a nice quiet beach. But Koh Ra Ecolodge has to be at the top of the list. What a great little island, rain forest, secluded beaches, mangroves and best of all the lodge is the only thing there.

No cars, no motorbikes, no 7/11 just very friendly staff, good food and amazing nature.

We will be back at this place to explore more with more time! Highly recommended if you love nature.

Room Tip: We had one of the beach bungalows it was just perfect for our family of 4 we loved it

A wonderful secret, we are almost reluctant to share, as Koh Ra is definitely off the beaten track. It has everything you need though, wonderful bungalows, much above the Thai average. And the owners are the sort of people who go straight to your heart and stay there !
Do make Koh Ra part of your visit, and experience a REAL escape from the crowd. The size of the ecolodge forever precludes this place to ever become something else than what it is.

I was fortunate to spend 2 nights at the Eco-lodge. Not having any expectations as my visit was booked by Anderman Discoveries, there was an immediate wow....striking mountains, dense rainforest and pristine beaches. The lodge facilities are spaced within the beach/forest fringe, the birdlife are your neighbours. I really think the beach could be a "secret" surfing spot at certain times of the year. The sala/dining facility are a focal point to re-live the days adventures. The individual cabins are rustic, well appointed and comfortable. The local Thai cuisine delicious. Two days was never enough, kick-back on the beach, trek through the jungle, explore the coastline, have a beer in the sala.....ah memories.

We have not been there yet, but have booked for December 2013, so 6 mths ahead.
We are planning to go with our 2 daughters of then 5yrs and 3.5yrs. We looked around for long as we wanted to find palace that is not the typical tourist resort, but offered more an exposure to Thailand but includes the beach summer holiday experience.
After 2 mths of searching we decided this was the bast place to go.

There are more expensive options that are easier to reach, but the combination of an Eco friendly and close to nature experience has made the decision easy for us.

We booked our flights through West-East travel from London and included hotel booking and transport through World Travel Service in Bankok. This combination offers the best value, knowing that there will be no unpleasant surprises.

The booking of the Ecolodge was easy. Very friendly individual replies that might take a few days to come, just be patient. They do respond.
The process was easy. Paying with PayPal directly in Thai Baht would be easier rather then having double conversion from £ into $ and then into Baht.

So far everything went well and we look forward to our stay.
Will post another comment after our holiday.

Room Tip: Went for the beach bungalow but you might go for something else, just ask them, they advise you

When booking this place, we knew it would be basic. We knew beforehand, that there were only buffet meals three times a day, electricity between 18-23 and jungle wildlife just outside of the bungalow. With exciment and curiosity we entered longtailboat to reach out Ko Ra.

First surprise was a abandoded concrete pier and road(!) through the jungle. We arrived to the fenced gate. This point I was sure, that we had arrived in Lost episode. This had to be one of the villages were Dharma iniatives people had lived, in another world!

Ecolodge has sala, which means combined eating area, meetup place, library, reception, bar and filtered-water fill up -point. Bring your own bottles with you! In front of sala was not-so-invating yoga-sala and few buildings and two bungalows. Beach is just in front of everything. It is beatiful.

We stayed in the beach bungalow. Bungalow was not just basic, it was near of its expiry date. Doors didn't open, wood was 'rustic' and the cement floor of the bathroom was half floating.

The same feeling was with the whole place. It felt like the ecolodge had had its glorious days some time in the past. Now jungle and nature had taken over.

Most problematic for us was that the place was dangerous for our active two-year-old boy. Bungalows and sala had no fences in relative high places. That worried us and created a lot of stress.

Food was good and tasteful. Kitchen even made for our child special food. Drinks are in a separate cooler.

This place is suberb for adventurous nature-lover, but if you are travelling with small children, you should consider these big limitations before you check-in.
