I booked directly with Pai island resort and got a great deal at 1800฿ per night. Arriving in the early afternoon after the challenging drive up from Chiang Mai, check in was swift, friendly and efficient.
The grounds here are amazing and it's very obvious that the staff take a LOT of pride in the presentation. Our Island Suite was something completely different and novel. Surrounded by a tall bamboo fence was the detached suite, including private courtyard, outdoor shower (there's an indoor one as well), large outdoor tub, sitting area with candles, and even a private sitting area through a gate which overlooks the stream and bushland. The tranquil private setting really made you feel like you were the only guests in the entire resort grounds.
The interior was very tidy with everything you could need including a DVD player. Wifi was complimentary, but at times was hit and miss due mainly (I suspect) to the power dropping out intermittently (due to a passing thunderstorm). While the doors are lockable from the inside, when you leave the room, you simply lock the compound gate with the key provided, leaving the room unlocked. With a safe provided this doesn't present any problem in my view.
Breakfast is simple, but adequate, and the service from the restaurant staff was very attentive, including offers of more food/coffee etc after the first plate.
We also had dinner here one evening, and again found the food very tasty, service very attentive (including offerings of mosquito repellent etc). There was the odd mozzie around, but not enough to make eating out by the stream anything less than a pleasure. Dinner was a little expensive, but by no means exorbitant. Staff were always friendly, from the reception staff, bellhop, right the way through to the groundsman, everyone had a smile, offered their help unreservedly, and seemed to anticipate your every need.
Laundry was expensive as you'd expect from a resort, but made special by the way they were presented, like new at the end of the day. The resort offers a tuktuk ride the short distance to the town centre, and collection from the designated point if you give them a call.
TV reception was rather poor, with only a couple of English news channels over and above the usual Thai channels. However the resort has a large DVD library available free of charge to guests, which more than made up for it. Mini bar prices for drinks and snacks were remarkably cheap compared to other resorts.
There's a fish feeding station with bags of fish pellets available "by donation". After dropping the first 10฿ coin and throwing in the first bag, I couldn't help but do it another couple of times. The stream is teeming with hungry carp, this was fun.
For anyone flying in to Pai, the airport is only a 2 minute drive away.
Sleep quality was amazing, the bed was extremely comfortable, I'd give it a 9/10. An ample number of large, soft, fluffy towels are provided, with quality bathroom products. If you're up for it, you can ask housekeeping to fill the outdoor tub and get it ready for you. I didn't bother, but I DID make good use of the outdoor shower, which despite feeling a tad exposed, was actually completely private, and shielded from anyone's view.
It was a real pleasure to rediscover Pai after so many years away, even in the height of summer, it was significantly cooler than elsewhere in the Kingdom, which made getting out and about much more enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Pai Island Resort to any couples heading up this way.
