“In love with Pai”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

This was one of my favourite places in Thailand. Amazing views, the sunrises and sunsets are absolutely breathtaking! Great salt water pool and what a hospitality! My days were well spent here and was sad to leave this beautiful place and lovely people!

The Quinlins has become a home away from home away from home for us. As Canadians living in Bangkok, we require a few trips out of town to find a little peace and quiet. Our first trip up to Pai led us to the Quinlins. Having only booked one night, we were quite sad to leave after spending a MONTH in this beautiful place. Not only is the scenery some of the most beautiful in all of Thailand, but the people are too. Gaynor and John are exceptional hosts and have great senses of humour. After dropping our bags in the bar (having not yet made it to our room) we immediately knew we were in for a great time and were already part of the family.

After an amazing month with the Quinlins, we knew we would come back...which we did. In March we returned for 2 weeks as we cannot get enough of this place. The rooms are beautiful. The pool (often to yourself) is exceptionally large with breathtaking views all around. Gaynor, John, Sophie, Zoe. and their great dogs Noi and Monty, are always there to meet your every need whether it be tours, info, poutine (a canadian delicacy), toilet paper, or to have some drinks and laughs with! Pai would have never been the same for us if it hadn't of been for the Quinlins. Don't miss out on this wonderful place and these great people!

Oh no, if we "home away from home, away from home" does this mean that we now have two more children and have to start sending you both pocket money !?!?!?!

Thank you for your wonderfully written review, just shows what an education can do.

We always look forward to you both staying with us, we just know that its going to be great fun and giggles all the way. We've stocked up on the UK gravy so look forward to seeing you both soon for some "poutine" or even Xmas dinner !!!!

This could be quite a nice place actually but misses a bit of effort- the rooms are getting a bit of a mouldy smell, the airco remote was missing, there was no soap etc. The pool was nice but could also be maintained a bit better (e.g. The leaves swept away around it, some fluffy pillows/ beds to lie on. ) It would be good value as the rooms could be quite nice but they require a bit more attention- additionally its located quit far from town and not too easy to find- so you need a car or motorcycle.

Firstly thank you for taking the time to do a review. We found it informative and you have confirmed our feelings that a guest house is not just about bricks and mortar. During your stay we had caretakers/managers looking after our resort whilst we were away. It seems from feedback that things were run differently to the way Quinlins is normally run. We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay, however, we do feel that it’s not in the spirit of t/a to leave two reviews for the same stay.

We would like to address your comments in order :-

i) the wooden handmade furniture in the rooms do absorb moisture, these would normally be cleaned with a solution to avoid the mouldy smell.
ii) Your reservation (via an agent) was for a fan room this is why the a/c control was not in your bungalow. A/C in Pai is only really needed for 10% of the year and we have experimented with room rates incl. of a/c and found that it is used unnecessarily and damaging for the environment.
iii) Our room rates during low season are cut to the lowest we can offer for the facilities we provide. We therefore have to cut one or two luxuries, eg. soap, etc.
iv) The leaves around the pool should have been swept on a regular basis, we agree. With regards to “fluffy pillows”, your stay was during raining season ! if they are left out they will, for sure, get wet and be unusable. There are many pillows in the lounge area beside the pool. There is one bed available and more will be added upon our return for the new season.
v) Quinlins is located 8km from town. This has proved to be an advantage to our guests who prefer peace and quiet but only being a 10 minute drive from Pai. We purposely advertise on our website (which includes a map), all agents that we use and google maps the distance, how to find us and our telephone number (Guests should be given a check-in sheet from Agents with our details on it) and there are many signs along the road (5). Quinlins offer a free pick-up and drop-off upon your arrival/departure and also offer a taxi service in and around Pai for a small charge, all prices are listed on the welcome packs which are located in the rooms and in the bar/lounge area.

Should you visit Pai again we would like to have the opportunity to show you around “the Quinlins” way even if you decide to stay elsewhere.

Stayed there for 2 nights due to great tripadvisor reviews. The place is difficult to find and well out of town. No wifi in or around our bungalow. Toilet was still wet from cleaning when we got into the room. Smell was a bit moldy.

Very spacious though, but i would argue that there better places at similar value closer in town.

Thank you for your review. It’s nice to see a couple that are so in agreement with each other, if only my old codger of a husband John were to agree with me more often I could “up” his meagre beer allowance !
Your comment regarding difficult to find, being “well” out of town and the mouldy smell has already been addressed in your partners review above. With regards to the lack of wifi, we do apologise. This issue is being rectified. The router is being re-located to allow guests the use of this free facility in all the rooms upon our return.
We’re sorry about the bathroom still being wet upon your arrival. This can only be due to an early arrival (before 2pm) or poor housekeeping, this will not happen again.
I would love to know the places you are talking about in your last paragraph “better places at similar value closer to town” maybe the next time John disagrees with me I can send him there ! During low season we agree that you can get a very nice room in town or closer to town for around the same price but maybe not the same facilities. As stated in your partners review above, guests book with Quinlins so as not to be in town. We constantly keep a close eye on prices and quality on new and existing guest houses in and around Pai with similar facilities, eg. swimming pool, etc. and we feel that Quinlins offer excellent value for money.
Having a caretaker/manager to look after Quinlins whilst we were away was a mistake on our part. We have now decided that this is not the way to go and in future the resort will be closed during any future holidays that we take.

Myself and a friend stayed in Quinlins for 3 nights near the end of our travels between Chiang Mai and Bangkok. It was the perfect place to stay and chill out between the madness of the two cities. Situated between Pai Canyon and Pambok Waterfall and about 15 minutes drive from the town its a great place to explore, especially if you rent scooters as we did. There is also a hotspring nearby which we hoped to get to but didn't have time. Quinlin's itself is gorgeous. Surrounded by hills, it's very picturesque. There's a nice, clean pool with a common area beside it where you can have breakfast and watch dvds. There are three bungalows, two small and one family sized. Ours, a smaller one, was very clean and spacious with a deck to sit out on. Wifi in the common area is great but not very strong in the rooms. Gaynor, the owner from the UK, was lovely and extremely helpful. She picked us up from our bus and dropped us back when we were leaving at 6 in the morning. She advised us on restaurants, bars and places to visit, all of which lived up to her word. She also offered to pick up a ring I had ordered and post it over to me if I couldn't get it in time! I genuinely enjoyed my stay here and would definitely stay again. All the best Gaynor, you're doing a great job.

The worst thing we ever did was stay here mid-way through our 6 week trip, as it surpassed all expectations. When we eventually left, after doubling the length of our stay, we spent the next 3 weeks complaining about the standard of accommodation everywhere else and most importantly customer service. John and Gaynor’s were unrivalled. Friendly and knowledgeable enough to show us around, teach me how to ride a ped and have a laugh and a few drinks with, but not so much so that they invaded your privacy. They were very helpful and genuine. Seriously can’t praise these guys enough, if you’re going to pai get it right the first time and stay at the quinlins. Really really had a bloody good time. So much so I'm now sat in Windsor almost 3 weeks after my trip, thinking about emigrating. Loved the place. See you next year.

My first ever review because Quinlins definately deserve it.

We booked via an agent for 1 night to see how we liked the place but stayed for over a week.

Gaynor (the owner) was working alone as her family were back in the UK for a holiday. She was a great host. Full of local information, places to visit, eat, etc. and was right on all the recommendations she gave us.

The bungalows are huge compared to most we have stayed in during our travels and really good value for money. Very clean and comfortable and the pool is just great.

This place is just a cool, relaxing, comfortable place to stay with a great host and two fabulous dogs.

Keep up the good work Gaynor and we WILL be back.

John and Gaynor would just like to say a very big thank you to you all for making our 2011/2012 season another successful one.

We're glad you all enjoyed your time with us and we hope you all enjoyed Pai too.

We are now on holiday ourselves but the resort is still open and Angelo and Kirsty will be your new hosts for the next couple of months.

For those that will return we look forward to seeing you soon, for those that can't, enjoy the rest of your travels !
