This hotel is attached to a Buddhist temple at A Hong, about 100km east of Nong Khai on the road to Bung Kan. It is on the banks of the Mekong River and enjoys sensational views up and down the river and across the river to the hills of Laos. As soons as we saw this place we knew we had found somewhere really special. There are two suite rooms with balconies that command views that are genuinely impressive. There is spaciousness in the rooms and in the public areas. A rudimentary breakfast is included but otherwise meals can be obtained by walking 5 minutes to the nearest village. No alcoholic drinks are served but again these can be bought locally. Guests probably need to behave in a way that would not offend. Don't expect more than adequate maid service. The beds are quite hard, as they often are in Thailand. You can wake up at dawn and attend the morning celebration at the temple where the monks pronounce their blessings and the local old ladies chant at length in mesmerising tones. Take some food and then, after the monks have eaten, everyone tucks in.
