Ko Tao Resort
Ranked #33 of 50 Hotels in Koh Tao
Reviewed January 11, 2013

Ko Tao Resort has 2 zones: beachzone and paradisezone. On a second day of our stay at the beachzone we discovered that both my friend and I were missing money: athough wallets were never left in the room for safety reasons, some emergency cash tucked away in suitcases was clearly stolen. When I reported this at the reception, receptionist, without any interest or sorrow handed a paper for me to write a formal letter to the manager, after which he "would have a staff meeting".
There's more reviews on here reporting theft in both paradise and beach zone rooms, and even the safety deposit box at the reception. Although you don't expect a hotel to assume responsibility for room thefts, one would expect the management to follow up with their staff and customers. I was never contacted by manager, neither did they reply when I contacted them by email, which indicates that management does not take any action so thieves know they can get away with it, and as other reviews show - keep stealing.

To sum these up, I do not recommend a hotel with thieves among staff and management who does not care about customer problems.

P.S. Chalok bay this hotel is located on is one of the prettiest and peaceful beaches on the island - and has fantastic sunsets. Other hotels around might be a safer alternative to this one though.

Room Tip: To keep your belongings safe you might want to go for another hotel.

This may just be the most comprehensive review this resort has ever had, for the simple reason that we were travelling in a group of 12 and have booked all bungalows they have plus one higher category room. This was my third stay at Ko Tao resort, and I have previously rated it quite well. However this resort has so much gone down the hill that I feel the need to set the record straight, and be it for the sake of the resort management to eventually come to terms with the apalling condition that the resort is now in, the unbelievable carelessness of their staff and the poorer than poor quality of their food.
As mentioned, our group booked all 7 bungalows plus two other rooms. On arrival, we found that despite several reconfirmations by email, only six bungalows were available and the seventh was occupied. That is where the bad experience starts. One of us had to go into a standard room. Standard here at Ko Tao resort does not mean what the word would normally imply: It is a tiny room that stinks of sewerage, has slmost no deco and is just substandard in all aspects. The rest of our group moved into the bungalows which used to be nice but have now deteriorated to a degree that the resort should simply be ashamed of. Here is our list of what is wrong:
- The bungalows smell foul, some of sewerage, some of mould, some of something unidentifiable
- The shower has next to no water pressure, in two bungalows the water pressure was so low that the guests could not shower at all and had to use other bungalow's bathrooms
- Toilets leaking faeces (! Yes, that's correct) onto the ground
- Linen not replaced over a 8 night stay. Room service generally not tidy. Massive amounts of dirt under the beds including cans, old food etc
- Fridge not stocked according to our special requests, despite having asked for it in numerous emails and receiving confirmation
- Floorboards creacking, lose in some bungalows
- Leaking roofs with water dripping directly onto the bed
- TV's with no stations programmed and unable to get any help
Next comes the restaurant: I have never been to a restaurant with more ignorant staff that completely ignore you, serve you without even looking at you. The food is bland and lukewarm, any restaurant in Chalok beach serves better food than Ko Tao resort. The breakfast is inedible, you can choose between eggs, eggs and eggs, and even they taste like cardboard because you will not find salt. A number of my guests have tried the restaurant and all were disappointed. Luckily there are plenty of choices along the beach.
Despite having occupied almost the entire resort, we were served in an unpolite, non-caring way with no appreciation for our business. Special requests were delcined with the usual "No can do" without even trying or considering the request.
The sunbeds are completely worn, some ripped, no cushions available for them. Beach area was not tidied regularly, and you could find the beer-cans of two nights ago still sitting where they were left on the day. Massive amounts of flies around teh rubbish bins because staff seem to be too busy (sorry for the zynicicm) to empty them. Actually staff seem to be too busy to do anything at all at this resort.
At the end of it all, they tried to charge me more than what was agreed for the rooms - it was just the disgraceful end that had to come.
I am sorry to say that this was my last stay at Ko Tao resort. For the premium price they charge (they are among the most expensive in Ko Tao and for sure the most expensive resort in Chalok Beach) I expect something a lot better. Management should wake up and start fixing their resort and getting staff that actually want to work. Anyone considering staying here be warned: Do not expect better than in this review. We have lived a week in every single bungalow they have, and none of them was acceptable.

We stay 3 days in ko tao resort on the beachzone goodpoint in this resort was the transfer they are very fast pick up you from pier to resort or to snorkeling excrusion. plus the suitcase boys are very freindly. The snorkeling tour was also awesome to do at there. its join tour with 40people very funny you are all day long in the big boat to 5 different island. Its was well done organized. But if you do that one time you will see alot of this island. At the restaurant staff are very friendly well good food with hight price. i recommend THAI FOOD!! Location and pool was very good the sea was clean blue water white sand.. prefect but the pool i found that to small. but if you go to the paradise zone there is must better incl the view is very nice. The room omg we stay are fristday in the bungalow. its was nice for one night i found this bungalow very dirty alot of dust very old inside and outside. and the badroom are connecting in the room with open air. so that was not comfortable you can smell what someone doing! ieeuww and the fridge are soooooo old omg plzz throw away.. Under the sheets was also sand i dont know of they are doing the laundry but sorry its was not nice to sleep with a dirty sheets with sand in it. Shame on that! It was terrible room... we dont like it.. for the next time we know for sure Never came to this place again...the lady on the front office WAS UNFRIENDLY we dont get a nice welcome she was to lazy i guess... So we are happy that the time goes so fast. we enjoy the view and the beach and other island. and koh nangyaun is the most beautiful beach on koh tao you have to go there.

Although the rooms were a little tired, especially the bathrooms which left a lot to be desired, the hotel is in a good beachfront location. Pool area is lovely and restaurant food was fine You can use the facilities at the sister "paradise" resort at the top of the hill. Complimentary transport is provided and I recommend the restaurant terrace there at sunset.

Didn't use any of the other facilities but we found staff to be pleasant and helpful

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. Upon arrival we were blown away with the location. It was on a quiet stretch of beach with crystal blue waters and white sand. We had spent a long time when booking trying to decifer the accommodation types but we decided to opt for a beach zone room. We were glad we opted for the beach zone and as you would expect it was a few steps from the beach. We went up to the paradise zone one day to have a look around as the hotel offers a free shuttle service. The views from the paradise zone are spectacular and the pool is amazing; you can swim whilst gazing down through the trees to the beach. There is also a bar and restaurant but the menu is not as varied as at the beach zone and the service was slow. You would not want to walk to the paradise zone as it was up a very steep hill. The rooms were very disappointing at the beach zone. The photographs online do not show that you are in a row of rooms so your terrace out the front is overlooked by your neighbours and all passers by. There is no privacy whatsoever. We were unfortunate to have a young child next to us and we could hear him screaming early in the morning and during the night as the walls were very thin. The rooms were very dated and everything needed a really good scrub! The cleaners only made the bed on a daily basis. There were no clean towels and the splatted mosquitos that were all over our walls on arrival remained there for our entire stay. The sheets were dirty, they had been washed but they needed to be replaced as they were torn and stained. The air conditioning unit was not always effective, it was a bit hit and miss as to whether it cooled the room. It is a shame because the pool, bar and restaurant were super and the staff were always helpful and friendly. There were shops and restaurants a short walk along the road from the hotel and you could easily get a taxi day or night. Taxi's were generally a standard fee of either 50 or 100 baht per person. Boat trips and taxi's go from the hotel on a daily basis for those interested in diving or snorkelling around the island.

Payed 1700 THB a night for an a/c bungalow - upon arrival the reception staff informed us we would need to move to a deluxe room half way through our stay. Ok not a problem. After being in our bungalow for half an hour LARGE RED ANTS started appearing everywhere on the floor and even in our bed. We were then greeted by a large coakroach and several more bugs in the bed which we thought were bed bugs (not 100% sure though). We got the non-english speaking security guy (only person around as it was now midnight), who fished the cockroach out but as for the ants he could not provide any kind of spray/repellent to try and help the situation.

We therefore took it upon ourselves to walk to the 7 eleven and buy some vinegar (after reading this was a natural repellent) and sprayed it around the room. We then got back into bed and tried to go to sleep. We were then greeted by more ants in the bed and that was it - we definitely were not going to sleep and demanded to be changed to a different room. We were downgraded to a standard room, which was fine as there seemed to be no ants.

The resort itself is quite nice, with a nice pool & great view of the sea, and alrhough very friendly staff, the restaurant is average AT BEST..

On the day which we were supposed to move to the deluxe room - we arrived back from our Scuba Dive at 12.30 and were told we could now not be moved. Reception claimed that the maid had been knocking on the door of our room and we were asleep and she could therefore not clean our room. This was rubbish as we had been out of our room since 7am on a dive, ALSO the maid had previously opened the door to our room whilst we were in there every day prior! On a whole, they were rude & unhelpful claiming false rubbish.

Obviously we dont have a leg to stand on when claiming any money back as we booked through a travel agency in Krabi.

P.s our standard room also is home to quite a few small ants aswell.

On a lighter note the resort's diving school is excellent, and all instructors and the owner are very friendly, as are most of the other staff around the hotel to be fair. just gobsmacked at how terrible and uninterested the reception staff were!!! not a care at all and very rude about the matter at hand, beware!

Room Tip: dont book with a thai travel agent you can't get back to easily, and make sure its set in stone...

While hotel is on a quite beach the rest of the stay left a lot to be desired!

We stayed in a bungalow which was dirty with dust, old, smelly, dirty sheets and the bathroom was old with something splatted all over the walls!

The infinity pool is a lot smaller than they show with barely any sunbeds ( probably enough if the hotel only had 10 rooms)!

The restaurant food is awful and quite expensive! They can't even make toast!! It was soggy!

My advice is don't stay here it's very expensive and after being here one night we left not wanting to stay another of the planned three!
