If you want to share your bed with bedbugs that bites you & if you

like also to eat in the middle of dogs, flies & other insects, you'll be

served there.

Bathroom is in a very bad condition, and you have to go down 5

steps to get there.

Also they take your PASSPORT as garanty for your expenses while

you stay & forget to give it back when you leave.

Agree with a lot of the other reviews on here:
Good bits- Great location, good breakfast, rooms ok, with a bit of character, excellent staff at the diving school, good collection from the ferry at koh tao (although we werent picked up from our hotel in koh samui as arranged and we had to arrange and pay for a taxi ourselves in the end, which the resort refused to refund us for)
Not-so-good bits: resort looking a bit tatty and dated in places, and the diving equipment although well looked after was very worn out and in dire need of replacing, some resort staff a bit unfriendly - especially in the restaurant, got a general slightly negative vibe about the resort - lists of things you shouldnt do were plastered everywhere from the room, bathroom to the swimming pool, very strict on timings for pool towels etc. seemed a bit churlish at times, and didnt feel like we were treated as valued guests.

Overall - compared to other resorts it seemed ok value for money, but I would consider looking around at other options next time - the kohtao cabana next door looked really nice, we had a great meal in their restaurant.

Koh Tao itself was just beautiful - one of the nicest places i've ever been, and much nicer than samui.

  • Liked — Cute colourful cottages, reasonable size and good location
  • Disliked — A bit tatty in places with lists of do's and donts everywhere

BIlled as high end and luxurious, the Coral Grand failed to live up these expectations. Koh Tao is not the most developed of islands, and as such travellers looking for serious bare foot luxury will not find anything like the type of places that can be found elsewhere in Thailand.
However, excellent service can do wonders to off set any aesthetic disappointments, but in this instance the service was so bad that it merely compunded the disappointments. The hotel is on the beach and it does have a swimming pool, but the area of beach is so narrow that there is little room for manouevre and also the very tired plastic sun lungers do not come with any cushions at all; apparently because the numerous stray dogs that boss the place at night time chew them. The beach towel allocation system is ludicrous and if you do not have your card you won't get a towel which is galling to say the least considering the amount that the hotel charges (way more expensive than any other resort).
The swimming pool is constantly occupied by dive school students and once again the sun loungers have no cushions. The pool area is very unrelaxing and it came as no surprise that very few people chose to hang out there during the day.
The huts are OK but have not had a lick of paint in 20 years and tcockroaches are in abundance, particularly in the bathroom which smelled of sewers. Whilst I was there a friend locked his key in his room and could not find any staff at all to open it at 1030 pm as they had all gone home (no night time staff at all) and as such had to smash a window to get in.
The restaurant is OK for snacks during the day but breakfast and dinner is canteen style food including chicken sausages for breakfast!
Overrall the hotel is over priced and over rated (by itself), is complacement and clearly doesn't place repeat business high on its business plan.
We moved to a nearby resort called Koh Tao Cabanas which was so much better all round.

Laid back, quiet, in-house dive shop, swimming pool and nice accommodation - however, the bathroom is located down a few steps, and can be very slippery. But don't expect service and accommodation of an international standard - it's Koh Tao - and it's how it should be! I would recommend it to friends.

Don't be put off by other negative reviews. Our initial thought was that the accommodation was basic and overpriced, but it really did grow on us (we booked over the internet, but discovered that some of the rooms were available at 300 bahts if you booked on the day).
We stayed in the captain suite with our two daughters aged 16 and 18 years old. The suites are perfectly located, looking out to the beach and pool (and yes the pool does get a little crowded with diving classes during some parts of the day but the sea is a fab alternative and also warmer than the pool).

We thought that the restaurant was fine and we enjoyed several lunches there and found the staff pleasant and helpful. However if the restaurant doesn't take your fancy there are plenty of other options further along the beach and in the town, which is a short walking distance from coral grand. We especially enjoyed Thaiti - Italian (short walk along the beach), The Giant Crab - fresh fish BBQ on the beach and Papas Tapas in the town.
Our girls would also recommend the Lotus bar by the horizontal palm tree on the beach for the evenings which had nightly entertainment. They especially enjoyed the fire dancing.

My husband took part in a few fun dives and the girls who hadn't dived before, did the open water diving course, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Tod, their instructor, made it all the more enjoyable and would recommend him.

We also did a snorkelling trip with Otty at coral grand which consisted of a tour of the island on a fab boat, taking in four snorkelling sites at great locations. We even saw black tipped sharks!! Would really recommend this trip.

A great week at Coral Grand and will definitely come back in the future.

My wife and i spent 5 awesome days at the Coral Grand on Koh Tao. We had a great time and found the service and room cleaning to be first rate. We found, as with most places in the world, people (staff) treat you as you treat them. Show a little respect and have a laugh instead of complaining about everything and see what sort of response you get. We booked on-line from Australia and saved heaps, did not do any diving and were never pestered to do so. Food at "The Happy Snapper' was o.k but heaps of cheap local eats down the road at Sairee. As for mozzies, gekkos and other wild life.............COME ON!!! YOUR ON A TINY TROPICAL ISLAND IN THE GULF OF THAILAND!!! Mozzie coils bought from the Sairee 7/11 are a good idea (rooms are screened but the buggers swarm in when you open the door) Yep, the power goes off from 5pm for up to an hour BUT this coincides with HAPPY HOUR at the bar :) Motorbikes(200 baht a day) are the best way to get around as taxis are few or hotel will give you a ride at 8.30am and 1pm to pier area.

Travelling as a family of 5 Mum, Dad, 2 kids aged 3 & 6 and Grandma.
We are Travelling around the world with the kids and met up with Grandma in Thailand.
We paid over 9500bht for our Captain suite with an extra childrens rollaway bed.

3% is added to all bills paid by visa/mastercard at grand coral
(That sort of thing irritates me... why not just show the price as it is !!
who the heck is going to be wandering round Koh Tao with 65000bhts cash in their pocket)
You need to pay for your entire stay up front !! that's to stop you leaving after the first night !!
The room consisted of two smallish airconditioned rooms each with a non aircon ensuite bathroom.
The bathrooms were sort of open to the elements and yet not open ( holes in the wall for insects, cockroaches, mozzies, gekkos etc. to get in and a hole in the roof which let the rain in down the bathroom wall. ( on the one occasion that it rained ) Holes in the drains too to let god knows what in. A loose tap on the sink etc . etc.
There was a price list on the wall which showed
the price of everything in the room
( including plastic coat hangers at 20 bht )should you decide to steal it !!!!
They also turn off the power from 5 - 5:30pm every day.
After 4 days I had to go to reception to ask them to change the sheets for the first time.
Remember we were paying over 9500bht per night for this place. ( about 150 quid or about 300 us dollars)
The Restaurant:
For Dinner this place is useless, serving only the same dishes as for lunch. No atmosphere, no tablecloths no music just a tv to keep the waiters occupied. No efort made to attract hotel guests,
in fact if they could get away with closing at 9:30pm then they would.
The attitude of some of the waiters left something to be desired.

This is not a family hotel in my opinion. Nor in my opinion is Koh Tao a Family destination. For the price we paid we could have had a really fantastic hotel pretty much anywhere in the world.
For all you guys that were in Koh tao 10 or 15 years ago and now want to bring the family here to show them how fantastic this quiet island isn't, then please think again. The beach area is full of techno bars and stray dogs one of which I understand bit a young girl while we were there (that means 5 trips to hospital for injections against Rabies)
( the 20 - 30 age group love it, and I can see why, it's like a permanent music festival atmosphere.)
There are a couple of very good restaurants away from the Hotel, on the back streets ( Potobello and Papas Tapas )
unfortunately neither of which are Thai restaurants, they can be accessed from the beach after crossing the stinking sewer area.

On the positive side
Breakfast was good, with a bit of everything for everyone. they also served a good selection of Lunchtime dishes.
We were met at the ferry by friendly staff and taken to the hotel, which was nice as getting off the Samui Cat-Ferry was bit Hectic.
If you like Diving then the dive operation here is very good. I had an excellent American dive instructor (Daniel).
Also did a couple of dives with Mike from Wales who was very good too. The dive boat was also very good and quick
which means you get to the dive site first in the morning.
Some of the dive equipment seems to be getting a bit old and tired now and despite being well looked after, some of it could do with being replaced.

Hope this is of some use to any families considering going to Koh Tao
