“Feel Cheated”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

Tired of sleepless nights due to noisy bars and extremely uncomfortable beds in accommodations closer to the main part of Sairee, we decided seek peace and quiet farther up in north Sairee Beach.

We checked out both Palm Leaf and Bow Thong which we understand were one and the same some time back, but have since split into different management teams. Caroline at Palm Leaf was extremely friendly and helpful, but we settled with Bow Thong in the end as they had availability for two rooms for the full duration of our 6-nights stay.

Room 003 (air-conditioned + fan + hot water) was very comfortable, but had a slight musky, moldy smell that you become immune to after 10 minutes in the room. No big deal.

The glass pane of the door was held up with cello tape, which we pointed out to be a hazard to guests, but was assured that it's safe - and anyway, "the sealed parts of other three sides would hold it up." (!)

Breakfast is included with the room - basic, but sufficient. One of the restaurant staff was even kind enough to bring free cups of coffee and juice to my sister - who lives on the island - who was visiting the parents at the resort.

The experience at Bow Thong would've been great had it not been one incident that marred it:

In an attempt to contain the cool air within the room, I tried to roll shut the half-opened glass shutter windows in Room 004. In the process, one glass shutter fell out and shattered. We admitted this to the reception lady-in-charge (we think she's the manager) and asked to put the agreed-upon damage fee of 400THB on our tab.

This lady comes rudely barging into our room later in the evening and asked whether we needed to purchase our boat ticket back to Suratthani - which we turned down as we'd bought our tickets earlier.

She was displeased as she left, only to return a minute later saying she "forgot" to let us know that her boss had asked for 800THB in damage for the broken glass pane even though we'd settled on 400THB. Our request to speak to her boss was turned down with a curt "Boss not here. In Bangkok." Further requests to obtain a phone number of her boss was met with "I don't have."

We would've paid this damage fee if this was initially agreed upon. But to dishonor an agreement and raise the penalty 10 hours later, we felt extremely cheated. Plus, we felt like she wouldn't have raised the damage fee had we bought boat tickets from her.

This experience has definitely ruined our experience, and for this matter, we would NOT recommend this resort. Go to Palm Leaf next door!

Room Tip: Stay in the A/C bungalows by the beach if budget allows. The 700THB/night bungalows are dark, dank...
