We stayed at the Koh Tao Royal for 2 nights at the end of December. We booked this hotel as our first choice of hotel was fully booked and this seemed to be very good value. We arrived at the hotel to find it was next to a building site and had little beach to speak of. Our room was a good size, good bathroom, clean and had a balcony. However, our balcony was overlooking the building site, so very noisy and dusty and hardly pictoresque!
We quickly realised that the hotel was effectively not fully open to the public - this was a 'soft opening'. The pool was nice, but the surrounding area wasn't quite finished and there weren't enough sungloungers, etc. We rarely saw a member of staff at the beach bar, so we resorted to going to the bar next door. There was a restaurant, but it didn't seem to have regular opening times. Overall, the staff were a bit absent and not customer service orientated.
The location of the hotel is quite good in respect of going into Mae Haad and also Sai Ree (it's just a short walk down a dirt track to Sai Ree, which we found much nicer than Mae Haad.
Once there is no longer a building site next door, the hotel has sorted out it's teething problems and if the staff focus more on their customers, I think this hotel has the potential to be a good, value for money option. However, at present, the rate we paid was a little overpriced for what we got.
