Taatoh Resort & Freedom Beach Resort
Ranked #48 of 50 Hotels in Koh Tao
Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

This resort is far out of town and only has the basic amenities. The service is poor and yes the lady at reception isn't nice. It is expensive to get to ( Ko Tao taxi drivers charge way too much, minimum 200 baht to get anywhere, and don't even think about hiring a scooter b/c the roads are terrible), and is very hilly. BUT, if you can get past all of this you can find an absolutely lovely beach, snorkeling, breath taking views from your front porch and some great walking tracks. It's a great getaway from the busyness of ko Tao for a reasonable price. Also bring your hiking shoes, insect repellant and make sure you block the hole in the bathroom with a bottle to stop insects from coming inside. Good luck!

Not in the busiest part of Koh Tao, but close enough to take a taxi or rent a vespa. Nice view from the bungalows, nice beach, nice hotel restaurant and nice restaurants nearby (just a short swim), nice staff. Just... nice!

We booked to stay here for 5 nights in January and when we arrived it went down hill big time!! The hotel exterior looks well but we had to hike to our room and it was so awful, we went back to the reception to change and were put into a more expensive room that was even worse! We left the next day, we were entitled to a free taxi to to the pier which she would not give us and made us pay 400 bath to go 8 minutes down the road! The raid into the resort is awful, you need to get a taxi everywhere. The staff are so rude especially the lady at the reception who I would guess is the owner, from the way she treated us I'm not surprised how bad the resort is overall! I would not recommend this resort to anyone!!

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

The location here is awesome! The beach is the cleanest we've seen on the island! Bungalows are sufficient, no luxury though.
Staff in the restaurant is nice but staff in reception is unfriendly. For example: They promised pick up bu then cancelled it.

sorry to say but it was all bad from the second we were greeted by the moody staff. this hotel is really dated the paths are not finished and the lights on the way to the room don't work make sure u bring trainers because its a hike to the rooms from the reception. the first room we got was a 1800 bht a night bungalow it was the worst place iv ever seen for that price there was no way of blocking the wildlife getting in and there was a huge spider in it. no fridge, no tv, the air con kept cutting off. we changed to a 2000 bht a night room we hat to put our bags over our head and drag them our self from the old rooms to the new room with no help. the 2000 bht room was the same but it had really steep steps into and it A BIGGER SPIDER :( but it had a tv . we stayed that night and checked out a 7.30 am we were entitled to a free taxi out of there so we asked and the rude bi**h behind reception charged us 400 bht out of spite . We would love to have taken some photos to show how bad it was but we were in too much of a rush to get out of the place!!

Room Tip: go to sairre beach we got an amazing room there for 1700 bht a night so nice we stayed an extra 3 da...

I cannot overstate how amazing the location of this hotel is. We stayed in bungalows right on the water, and the view, beach and swimming were amazing (snorkel in the next bay over for black tip reef sharks and turtles). The fruit and pancakes for breakfast were great and the staff was clearly in the middle of renovating the interior of the main building for the better.

The rooms were clean (though not cleaned through the trip), air conditioned and pretty basic (ensuite had a shower in the wall, sink and hole in the floor for drainage and no fridge), for the price was incredibly reasonable and the bed was comfortable enough. I would probably book a more expensive room if I was there again. But would definitely go back. The lady at the front desk was also very knowledgeable about transportation and sights around and off the island.

This is probably not a good hotel if you don't like climbing stairs, as there are many up to the rooms and up to the main building. There is also no phone or wifi in the room, though there is free wifi in the main building (which was not working consistently when we were there). Our bungalow faced across the bay and music from the bars was a bit annoying when trying to sleep, but my friends had the bungalows facing out to sea and didn't hear anything. If you leave the hotel in the morning, wear lots of bug spray. I didn't notice mosquitos in the rooms but at the front of the hotel, they are fierce.

Room Tip: The bungalows facing the sea are quieter, but every bungalow has a great view! Ask about the amenit...

We weren't sure where we were going to stay when we got to Koh Tao and were amazed when we reached Freedom beach. The private bungalows are minimalistic, but really all you need when your own porch looks at a marvellous view and you can walk straight to the beach 2 metres from your door.
Great view and great snorkeling on our private beach and the beach 10 minutes walk away had turtles and sharks!
Wonderful food and very friendly and helpful staff.!Would definitely stay there again-great price.
They were totally renovating when we were there so I think it will only get better.
You do have to turn in your key to get your room cleaned, which we didn't realize.
